Upon detailing this spring, I noticed the carpets don't really fit.
It feels like there is a gap under them, and they are also starting to go wavey & warp. My neighbour agreed and said that they'll look like crap in a year. I have had the car for 7 months. Brand new 2009.
I have put 8K on it and rarely have passengers, maybe a total of 40 times.
Just the front seat. I've had 2 people in the back seat once.
So the car has barely been sat in.
I hear there is known problems, will the dealer change them or just make it fit? Or do nothing at all? I'm looking for suggestions before I go see them because they are very intimidating and seem to just talk around issues.
I love my car, I do not like the dealer. Can I go to another in town?

Since your car is new take it back to the dealer and tell them about it

Go to a different dealer... see if they'll do something for you... under warranty.
Or just buy some weathertech floor liners.

I would definitely go to a different dealer. Just go in and tell them like you said it here. Basically your carpets look like crap and you're wondering if its covered under warranty. I had mine replaced do to excessive wear under the driver seat because I'm tall and have the seat all the way back and sometimes like to rest one foot on the cross beam. If they don't go for it then wait another 6 months and go to a different dealer.

Mazda uses a non-woven material for several of their vehicles. Think fiberglass, but softer.

They use it because it allows them to assemble the car quickly because of its stiff nature. It also allows Mazda to shape the carpet to the many different bends that the Mazda3 floor pan has.

The downsides.

Inorder to get those tight clean bends, they end up having sections of the carpet hovering above the floor.

The texture of the carpet is that of felt. There are no cut pile fibers to allow a plusher feel and deeper color fast over time.

Because of the non-woven construction, dirt, dust etc. gets trapped in the fibers and are extremely difficult or impossible to clean/remove.
