View Full Version : What to do about stone chips?
Should I apply touch up paint with a tooth pick? I am afraid I would get rust if I do nothing.

you can mix the clear coat with the touch up paint than use a tooth pick for application. It looks almost original on my car. If you make a mistake, just wipe it off before it's dry. Good luck.

I usually cry over it for 10 minutes then do a really crappy job of touching it up, through sobs.... hahhhaha, ahh the joys of a black car.

I got a really fine paint brush for like $1.29 at an art store at it is much more accurate than the marker.

This is just the reality of driving. If you don't want rock chips then don't drove.
If you get the spray paint, you will only be modifying a larger area, and creating a bigger problem because it won't blend with the clear coat. Then you will want clear coat on an even larger area, but the orange peel (i.e. the way the light reflects off it) won't match, and then you will have an even bigger diaper stain on your car.
Trust me, if you don't want to pay big bux to repair the whole panel, just fill it in through very fine layers of touch up paint, and then top it off with touch-up clear coat.

I'm in the same boat as well. It doens't help the Mazda paint is crap to begin with.
Every time I see a chip in my pearl white paint, I wallow in my sorrows..... then curse for a few seconds..... wallow in my sorrow again...... then learn to deal with it.
I would use touch up paint, but it doesn't look as clean on CWP.

For those of US with stone chips - does the car tend to rust more quickly if you dont' repair the chip?

Depends where the stone chip is. 99% of the time, the stone chips are on the bumper which is plastic or fibre-glass. Therefore it will not rust. Its just an aesthetics thing.
But yes, it is frustrating. I do a lot of highway driving and have way too many stone chips for a 5 month old car.

before I didn't use the toothpick method so I have a really ugly touch up job on my hood. after that the touch up were ok.. not perfect, but not as bad... I just curse for a few seconds and touch it up right away, esp. on the body. bumper i'm not worried as much since it's not going to rust. i just saw a new one yesterday dammit

Ugh the other day some TWIT in a pickup cut me off and drove super slow... he also had leftover GRAVEL in the back as well so stones were just WHIPPING out at me left and right, bouncing off my hood and windshield (if you can only imagine what that was like to witness)... I was FUMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had about 5 new chips on my hood and roof, and a ton of really teeny tiny ones on the bumper. People are retarded.... SIGH and yet another crappy job with the touch up pen. :flaming

Boo!!!! Victim of this today too. Driving to work North on the DVP. Come up to a wide load tractor trailer carrying about 3 tractors going about 105 km a city crew truck behind it. There are 3 lanes on the DVP At this point, this retard should be in the right!!! No, he's in the frigging middle, I am on the left lane coming up and start hearing little things hitting my car, it took me a second to realize where the hack they were coming from (the tracks on the tractors it was carrying were covered in dirt and rocks), I couldnt pass quickly as there was a car on the tractor trailer's left, so for some retarded reason I slow down to not get hit by this stuff and move into the middle lane to try to hide behind the city work truck. I am not getting hit for a few seconds and then it starts again, stuff is flying around the truck (I am sure it is getting banged up) and coming my way, nothing big but just little nicks. I fall further behind trying to figure out the best way to avoid damage. As I am going to work I dont have all day so i need to pass, i go back into the left lane as we are going down and a hill and I zoom by again getting hit a bit.
Didnt think too much off it right after, was just driving home and noticed the windshield is completely covered in lil chips. A bit on the hood too. Nothing huge but still! There was already stuff on the windshield and i got used to it but now there is NEW stuff and its all over and I just want to scream.
Cheap windshield strikes again! Whats up with this

You'll learn to live with them. The paint quality on Mazda's is not the best.

I was learning to live with them but I was taught a new lesson this morning that I am still having a hard time digesting. The paint bugs me but I don't see it as much so whatever. The windshield however drives me absolutely insane! I just got used to a fairly big nick and a few other things from a few months ago and just this afternoon I again was taken back. All I see is little specs and nothing else. I want to enjoy the view of the road out in front as most people do. Its quite the eye sore and hard to ignore.
Sorry to hear about your frustration too Ardeep. That Road Rash repair kit looks promising but they all do. If you end up trying it out let me know how it turns out.
