View Full Version : Car rentals: Who's got a hookup?

Hey guys,
I'm putting it out there as a shot in the dark, but i'm looking to rent a car for a few days next weekend, and was hoping someone out there has an "inside track" or "hookup" on a better rate than what is available to the public.

Enterprise stands to be the cheapest out there thus far ($18ish/day), but I don't have (and don't want) a platinum credit card to bypass the accident insurance waiver fees. My gf has access to a platinum card, however she won't be around for the pickup, and Enterprise is not willing to bend the rule (even if I get her to sign the contract in person, earlier).

You don't need really a platinum card as your insurance company most likely covers you for rentals.... the last two places I've been insured with have covered me, maybe give them a shout and see?

^^ Budget on Derry Rd. near Airport used to rent out Mustang and sebring convertibles, you might want to check with them. I believe they charge extra for the novelty though...

I'll check, but I sincerely doubt it... I'm with TD on some wierd setup with my parents - I don't know how they swung it, but there are discounts on top of discounts with discounts on the policy :P

Check with your Credit Card policy, they may cover you for rental insurance already.

PCF :( No coverage.

for your personal car insurance company to cover you for 3rd party liability and collision/upset you have to have endorsement OPCF27.

Gold or Plat. Visa's in almost all cases have CDW/LDW coverage.

Yeah... I'm doubting I have the extra coverage in my insurance policy, and while I can qualify for a gold/plat card pretty easily, I'd like to stay away from getting one... I doubt i'd recieve the card in time even if I applied today :P

J you can always add OPCF27 to your auto insurance policy. It's probably in the range of $25-$35 for it.

True... For a one-time rental though?

check your policy if it carries over to a rental or apply for a gold credit card then you will have coverage from that. if you are close to oakville i may be able to assist you with a rental

nope. u can have as many rentals, only crappy thing is that if you get into an accident or if there are damages to the rental you have to pay your deductables.
to be honest with you, you should apply for a no-fee gold visa. there are no deductables.

well, sometimes you don't plan to need a rental. The $25-$35 is yearly.

My original arguement is that I didn't think a gold/plat card would come in time for my rental (next Friday). I've since gone ahead and put in an application anyway now.

You are correct it is unlikely to be approved that quickly. However adding the OPCF27 to your insurance policy will likely only cost $25-$35 and can be done in 24-48 hours.

get the insurance regardless...last thing you want is to get a call from your gf telling you how she crunched and mangled the rental's driver's side-door in the condo's garage, while your car's strapped to the dyno with 15 guys looking on :bang...but whatever, $2000 later, you can forget about it.

LoL - that statement was eerily personal... kind of like... dripping with the pain of an experience-past :chuckle

I think that's the next best route, depending on how much it will run me.

If things pan through, Enterprise stands to be the cheapest of the pack.

SilentJay

Believe me, i've been scouring the web for usable online coupons. Hotwire eh? I dunno if that's a legitimate site or if you're trying to tell me in "code" to go steal a car :chuckle

Hotwire is legitimate... I've used it several times before to stay at hotels really cheap. Usually what they do is ask you where you want to go, what area you'd like to stay in, and how many stars you'd like your hotel to be. Once you pay then they give you all the information needed. I stayed in Montreal for 2 nights at the Delta in a king sized suite for $98 a couple of years ago!!!!! I'm not sure how they do it with cars, but I can assure you it is legit. :)

Or just go in the comfort of your own car silly!!! It's Ottawa it's not Nova Scotia hahaha.... It's a 4 hour (and some) drive it's not that bad.... I do it all the time. It's a really fun drive!!! And it's pretty easy on the car... unless you're driving into a forest in the middle of nowhere and you're worried about getting scratches n stuff haha...
