There's an article describing a $1B plan destroy the existing Market Village mall (it's next to Pacific Mall) and replace it with a brand new development with a 800,000 sq. ft. mall and a 20-storey condo/hotel.
The traffic is gonna be insane if this goes through!

I'll avoid that area like the plague if and when construction starts.
Looks good though.

+1 but builder is NOT Asian:
Plans for the Remington Centre, an 800,000 square-foot Chinese-themed mall adjoining a 20-storey hotel and condo tower, are expected to be announced by Toronto developer Rudy Bratty's Remington Group at a news conference today.

Asian or not, that's a smart guy. Good grief the traffic is going to be 10000x worse... Can you imagine Chinese New Years in that area?! I went with my family one year and spent an hour or so looking for a spot!

+1 but builder is NOT Asian:
But who do you think will buy from there? 95% Chinese I'm sure. The builder never has the money upfront to build it so the 1 Billion is really from the potential owners.

The rendering looks real nice. But like The Star has said, traffic is going to be so much worse. I have family who live in the area and they mentioned that they want out thanks to this.

But like AskClaudio said, the property value will increase. Tell them to hold out if this goes through because you'll see that value skyrocket...THEN sell

What would a hotel do in that area, not really much around there.
If any of you know Spadina's Chinatown Ctr location before they build the condo slum, I'd much rather they left if as it was. Will this be anything like that?

Thats going to be insane and would discourage me from going to those malls anymore unless they somehow increase the amount of traffic lanes and lights to prevent 4 way stop collisions.

I like the idea but don't like the idea of remington building it.
If anyone been to their Downtown Markham model townhomes.. you'll know what I mean. $700k, 3000 sq ft 6 SIX story townhome. an elevator is avaliable for an extra $50k. The floor & rooms are small, Traffic in that area is going to be insane as well, they are going "green", which means less public roads, shopping/mall area will be minimum parking space .. good luck walking around in the winter. The green concept is good, but we are missing an appealing public transit system.
If they do something like this to market village, there better be a Union station underneath.
Plans for the new mall are decidedly more upscale than the sometimes junky Asian retail condos that have dominated the Markham area. Some inspiration undoubtedly has come from Vancouver's Aberdeen Centre, a high-end condo and retail complex whose stores wouldn't look out of place in Yorkville.
fail, its built right beside Pacific mall which is known to be cheap. This reminds me of the elements in HK, building a huge high class mega structure for bragging rights. 10 years later since construction started, the high end retail stores are all still strugging to survive and operations cost is up the roof.
But Bratty promises his mall will be more luxurious still, with thoughtful touches. Tour bus drivers bringing guests to the mall will be looked after, for example, courtesy of a private rest area where they can nap and shower, he says
fail if they mean other china people as tourists, they will use all the avaliable facility there then walk out without spending a penny.
However, he acknowledges "traffic is always a concern in that area" and he has yet to see a traffic report by Remington's consultants.
complete fail, there is no mentioning of any public transit system increase in that area. Will P-mall still be accessable with the locals with all these parking space gone? How will tourists living in the remington hotel get around this crazy traffic?
By the time everything is sorted out and good to go, I doubt Bratty will still be around, he is 77 already. The expansion plan is good, but I don't think having remington in charge is.

Kennedy and Steeles is the intersection where my first 3 got totalled, thanks some biatch who ran a red light. No, she wasn't Chinese ... or asian at that.
This was back in 2004, less than three months after I got it.
Like the majority say here, avoid that area like SARS ... or H1N1 ...

They should make ramps which lead directly in and out of the complex. Whether it be an overpass or underground. That intersection should also have left turn lights. I used to live in that area so I've seen the mayhem in the past.
