i have about a bit of cash i'd like to use to buy a new toy.. Anything really ( technology bores me every 4 months) lol
So i was thinking maybe to get a psp, or an iphone, or maybe a lens for my Rebel XS
seeing as i am not a expert in that area, i'm wondering what you guys thing.
I was looking at the cheaper lenses. I cant afford 400+ lenses.
So
EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS or EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III
I know i can get pretty good zoom with both of them, i know the 250mm lens is an IS lens, but what are the other advantages/disadvanteges of these lenses compared to each other.
Also is there a good reputable place to buy these lenses used?
Thanks :)

if u want a decent zoom lens under $400
i'd recommend the sigma 70-300mm f/3.5 - 5 lens
(i forget if that the right f' numbers)
but it's pretty good for the price
better than the canon one you're naming if my reviews haven't lied to me

do you know exactly which lens that is? I see on their site they have about 4 different 70-300mm..
excuse my simple questions.. I'm very new to all this
would you recommend buying used? I really want to save as much money as possible lol

Used is sometimes a VERY good option - I picked up an L series 70-200 Canon lens for $400!!!
The EF-S 55-250 IS is a VERY nice lens with a very usable working range - great for point and shoot as well as more "professional" shots. The optics are very good. And new, IMO, you'd have a tough time finding a nicer lens with such a wide range that also has IS which does make a difference.
If you go used - buy LOCAL and try the lens out first. I bet you could find a nice used 55-250 as well as a 50/1.8 which combined less than $400.
Good luck!

I had the Sigma 70-300 APO EX DG, then I got the Canon 50-250 IS. The Sigma was a good lense but I sold it since the IS is so helpful when shooting.

so i still haven;t bought the lens. but maybe tonight..
Someone is selling brand new Canon 55-250 IS for 300.. that seems to be the general range,. give or take 20 bucks, but this is new..
should i pull the trigger?
Also for a hood i know you need the ET-60, should i get a knock off or go buy the original? Same goes for the UV filter
Thanks

Check this website for review of lenses, including Canon APC series lenses. Very thorough reviews.

Canon brand lens hoods are very expensive. Check eBay for generic lens hoods. For UV - there are lots of reputable brands. I assume you want UV primarily to protect the lens glass?

If you want a good lense for cheap....well, depends how into photography you are. They don't really work in the same sentance. A good 'cheap' one is a EF 70-200mm f/4L. It goes about $600 used on Craigslist. If you are an occasional shooter just get an EF 75-300 or 55-250. Remember you get what you pay for. But if you are a general photographer and not using it for business or anything that is big money you don't have much to worry about. Just remember that when you zoom in on the image on your computer after you shot at 300mm it might not be perfect. A 75-300 might run you between $150-$225 used at most. If you have any other questions send me an email and I can help you out.
