View Full Version : The Total Fail of Street Unit Mount Tale

A couple of weeks ago I started noticing a strange shhhhhh-type sound that was coming from the engine/tranny area when the car was moving. It wasn’t constant and was quiet to the point that i didn’t hear it at all with the music playing.

So yesterday, im on my way running errands, or i should say crawling errands considering that the average speed was probably around 30 km/h moving from one red light to another. All of a sudden i hear a knock. A LOUD knock. Praying in the back of my mind that it’s just some pop can that i ran over on the road, i turn off the music and start listening for new noises: there were plenty! Aside from the above mentioned knock that kept reproducing on every attempt to move the car forward, there was also some excessive shhhhhh-ing and other weird noises that you really don’t want to hear coming from your car. I pull into the first parking lot, stop the car, open the hood.... my engine sitting on an angle? a pretty sharp angle to the tranny side ... when my mechanic came down there (THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH JIMMY!!!!!) and looked under the car we saw the engine sitting on the axle, the undercarriage ripped and the FMI pipe mount broken off. Called a flatbed, towed the car to the shop lifted it up:

...and pulled out this glorious SU side mount:

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e88/axela1/DSC00452-1.jpg

It looks like it had been cracked for a while since it already started rusting inside the crack:

Basically if it wasn’t for the CPE rear mount that held the engine in place and prevented it from dropping all the way to the ground while i was driving, cracking the oil pan and who knows what else.... the only damage sustained by the CPE mount was the ripped rubber bushing (which CPE instantly agreed to replace for me free of charge even though it wasn’t caused by a malfunction of their mount):

SU on the other hand had offered to issue me a refund for the mount and a $150 dealer credit. $150!!!! You gotta be kidding! After the towing, the new axel the undercarriage and other misc parts, plus labour my bill was in the $2000 zone. I guess I should be grateful that my SU rear mount had previously snapped 3 times after which i just gave up on them and went with CPE. Otherwise, chances are i would’ve been stuck trying to pay for a new engine on top of everything with my $150 SU credit.....

Damn, so Street Unit sell you bad mounts. Obviously you're ok but what if the worst would of happen and they had a lawsuit over a dead body? What if you were on the highway and a transport truck aniliated you? They don't buy people's silence but they will get photo bucket to remove the pictures of their parts off your car. Man They really need to get insured because the lawsuits must start pilling up somewhere....

Good luck with that, I am sure they will read this and still try and have it moderated as usual.

Worst yet is I bet CTA Patrique has to take the loss again. Honestly this is getting rediculous. Every time you call them and tell them your shit broke they always give you the bullshit line "Impossible"......all I can say is thanks for trying.

150 + refund of parts c'mon, if your going to make and sell a product the lease you can do ib back it up. I bet you're the only one it happen to as they would say, just like the rear engine mount I broke. I think we had like 7-10 of them that we knew but I was the first.

I'm gonna make SuckMyUnit.com Stickers any one want some?

thank god I never bought from them again....

good luck, hope the bill is not too bad!

Geez and I have had a Street Unit rear mount on my car for a few months already. So far it has held up fine to 2 track days and about 8,000km or driving but I will have to keep checking it I guess.

That's so messed up... You should demand compensation for out of pocket expenses (At the very least)... Also big thumbs up to Jimmy for going out there on short notice.

I have a SU rear mount that's been in use around 2 years, probably about 45,000kms now on it and it's still fine. After 30,000 kms the stock rear mount had a HUGE rip in the rubber bushing

Thanks for the heads up. I gotta bring my car back in Saturday cause the axle didn't stop the clicking, so I'll ask them about it then.

Is this on top of the previous tsb replacement from a couple of years ago?
