I find this statement very very misleading. Corolla's 7.4L and 5.6L/100km fuel economy is based on the lower trim model with 132hp at 1.8L 4 cylinder. These numbers should only be compared to mx3 GX and GS model. If we look at Corolla's XRS trim (158hp 2.4L 4 cylinder), the fuel economy is 9.4L and 6.5L/100km. This fuel economy should be compared to the GT model. We can see that the fuel economy of mz3 GT is very competitive. This review is biased.

No, the Corolla is better rated in terms of fuel economy, even if you compare a CE to a GS. But really, so what? After a certain point, it makes less and less economic sense to chase the mpg.

Going from a Hummer H2 10mpg, to a Cadillac sedan 15mpg will save you tens of thousands of dollars over the life of a vehicle. A Camry that gets 20mpg will save thousands more. A Corolla will only save you a few thousand more over the Camry. The econ difference between a Mazda3 and Corolla, won't be huge.

There's likely more variability in insurance and repair/maintenance costs, to make the fuel cost difference unimportant. For me, there's a premium for not having to drive a Corolla :-)

o yea, i agree with you total. Mazda 3 is much better than corolla. What bugged me was the reviewer used the wrong comparison and tried to make a strong point out of it. In any case I think the fuel economy of mazda 3 with the engine is very reasonable :)

I don't think you can even compare a 3 and a Corolla.

After my mom totaled her Corolla, we gave her our first 3. She said she wasn't giving it back, and it's now her car :P This coming from someone who has owned Corollas for 10 years means something.

I think the only real complaint is the styling. A lot of people dislike the big smiley face look on the front. Personally? I LOVE the new styling. Every time I open my garage door and see my new black 2010 GT, I just f'ing LOVE it.

+100!, I agree completely. I love the look of my 2010 and get compliments all the time, only people I've ever heard say the front looks like a smiley face are people on this board!! (I don't really see it either, most new grills are designed in a similar fashion now). Anyways, did the motoringtv review say 0-60 in 7.6???, That is my exact car he tested - the esc pkg. Can't wait for a few more thousand kms of break in to be over with, then I can test the 0-60 myself!. Having put about 500kms on the car so far, I can say i have NEVER driven a car that handles better (not that I've driven a lot of REAL high end cars)

Indeed the Corolla has slightly better fuel economy, but who wants to be stuck with a Toyota these days? Once you realize that Corollas and Civics are some of the most expensive cars to insure, the minute savings in fuel is quickly eaten up by much higher insurance.

To be quote honest, the city is just over crowded with the same bland and boring silver Corollas, and we all know what neighbourhoods are just filled with them. You couldn't pay me enough to drive a Corolla everyday. :chuckle

Absolutely - one of the things I LOVE about my 3 is that you see so few of them on the road. I'll see maybe one or two 2010 hatches on a given day.

Driving my gf's 2010 GS Sport last week I realized it has no engine temperature gauge (it is AT). Is this the case with all 2010s?

Same with all 2nd-gen cars. Just get the "I'm cold" light until it warms up, and the "I'm dying" red light when its too late.

Didn't notice that on her car either...definitely not "cold light", but I do not some of the second generation models carry such a feature.

It's not time-based. It turns off when engine temp is around 60C - so it very much depends on the outdoor temp.
