Metal shavings in engine

My friend told me when purchasing a new 2010 mazda 3 that i shouldnt drive it on the highway for the first 1000km. The reason being due to the metal shavings in the engine. Is there any truth to this since i never heard anyone mention anything regarding that sort of issue?

nah...

The car is built, and the oil is flushed and replaced before it leave the factory.

Best off to stay away from the cruise control for the first 1000km and try to vary your speed.

I've heard that you should drive your car gently (ie: don't floor it when the light turns green) for the first 600-100km. It gives your engine some break-in time.

Errr...that's 600-1000km.

driving on the highway is fine.. if anything it's better as long as you vary your speed..

they're built to last, but for the first 1000, I wouldn't redline your car or drive it excessively hard on highways or anything

Well from toronto to ottawa is full of hills... = wide range of rpms..

Basically.. what i told was..

for the first 500kms.

Don't go past 120km/h
Don't use tiptronic (i got auto)
Don't use cruise control

I used tiptronic @ 470km hahahaha

in the old days the manufacturers used to give the car off without letting it run, but now I think they run and test the cars so there is no need to be too careful about this, just don’t redline but you can take it to like 4-5 thousand RPM once a week or so. This will actually make your car faster than other Mazda 3's in some ways. Don’t ask how, this has just been an experience for me after having many new cars in our family.
