Here's a copy of the email I sent to the service manager. Read for yourself, let me know what you think:
================
I'm hoping you can help shed some light on the situation with my car so we can arrive to some kind of solution. I moved my service from Gyro to Downtown last year for convenience and because of recommendations from the Toronto Mazda message board.
On July 20th, I dropped of my 07 Mazda3 Sport for a regular oil change.
At about 10 am, I received a call from your service technician informing me that I needed to have my transmission fluid changed, and that my splash guard had been "cut out and removed" from my car and needed to be replaced. I agreed to the fluid change, but not to the replacement of the said part as this appeared extremely unusual, given that my last 2 services had been done with Downtown.
Upon my arrival at Downtown Mazda I was shown the picture from underneath the car with the splash guard missing. I was informed the replacement cost for this part was around $190.
Here is where the dilemma begins:
My previous service, done on December 12th 2008 (on invoice # MACS54375) was a full inspection (24/48000km). Previous to that, my other service was done on July 15th 2008 (on invoice # MACS51394).
At no point during those 2 previous services (including a "full inspection") was I ever informed that a part described as "important and recommended" by your tech and service advisor was missing.
To be sure, I went back over all my service reports from Gyro, and there is no mention of a missing splash guard.
As I'm sure you can understand, there is some confusion here.
* Why was I not informed on two previous services that the splash guard was missing
* How do I know that other parts will not be "forgotten" should I choose to continue my service with Downtown?
* How can I be sure this part was not removed by Downtown?
At this point I am condsidering taking my car back to my old garage, Master Mechanic, for the rest of my services. This is unfortunate, as your location convenient and so far the service has been good.
I am hoping you can help out with this situation.
Thank you
