hi,
i have this very annoying thing happening with my 2009 gx hatch standard.
it doesn't happen always, but 2 out of 5 times, when i shift into reverse, from a complete stop, it doesn't want to engage.
it's like something is blocking it to go into reverse.
then i usually put it back into neutral and then try again which usually works fine.
i don't know if this is a mechanical problem, but it is very annoying.
other than that, my shifting gear is very smooth and responsive.
anyone else with similar issue, or some explanation why it happens?
thanks.
its supposed to do that, i forget why

I believe it's due to lack of synchros for reverse that makes it difficult some times for the gears to mesh. It's normal and I recall the manual even saying so.
This doesn't happen as much for my 2005 5spd manual compared to when it was new so maybe it'll get better over time. But then again I use redline gear oil.
NO idea why but put it into first then into reverse. Thats what I do.

That happens to me sometimes as well. I usually just move the shifter into the 4th position, and then try again. After I do that, the reverse gear engages nicely.
You don't even need to put it in gear just put it back in neutral then back in reverse..it is normal for alot of manual cars. Does the same thing for our honda fit.

same here.
put it into first, move a little bit, then put it back into reverse.
always works for me.

Yeah, just because of no synchro in R. Normal.

Happens to me too. Last night was the most recent time.

It is the synchros, or lack thereof, to engage reverse. It is normal.
Just put the car back into neutral, take your foot off the clutch, re-engage the clutch and voila, place it into reverse. Problem solved.

ok good, so it's common i guess.
i don't remember having this issue with my previous car, golf III, but as Xerox said, maybe it will get better over time.
thanks guys.

I know this is an old thread, but I've had my 08 GT for over a year now, and I notice the same thing. I usually have to put it in first and move up a slight bit, then reverse it in. Doesn't happen often. But it is indeed annoying.
Probably not the best solution, but I let off the clutch pedal, just oh so slightly while shifting into reverse if it gets stuck. It usually just plops into gear without grinding or anything. I'm talking... The tiniest little bit of clutch disengagement. Very slowly too. Its just enough to turn the gears a notch and let them mesh.

I'll have to try this out sometime. Seems like less of a nuisance than having to take it out of gear and put it back. Often times I have to do it multiple times until it willingly slides into reverse.

Also happens to me. I just shift from 5th to reverse

Consider this my "I'm not liable if this nukes your tranny" warning. I've been doing it for 5 years with no issue however. :-P

Same thing I do. This happens to all standard cars that i`ve owned
