View Full Version : Check battery electrolyte weekly?

My owner's manual says on pg 8-32 that I should "Inspect the battery electrolyte level at least once a week". Does anybody really do this?

I've never checked the electrolyte level in any car battery in the 20 years I've had my licence. What year is this anyhow? Haven't all batteries been "maintenance free" for 30 years? Had I known this before I bought the car, I would have insisted that they change the battery.

I have never looked at a battery unless I'm having electrical issues...lol. I will continue not checking the electro....thingies....lol.

I can't remember now that I'm thinking about it, but aren't our stock batteries maintenance free ones?

Checking battery water levels is very popular amongst boat owners but not so much for the average car owner. Simply because you are dealing with acid and most people don't want to bother dealing with that. But yes, you are supposed to check the water levels and add distilled water if low. I'm not sure if the stock battery is a sealed one (doesn't mean its maintainance free).

Personally I can't be bothered. A new battery is $100 but how much to fix my eyes and skin up if I get acid on them. Even for my boat, I went ahead and just bought the Optima BlueTops which are AGM sealed and maintainance free.

the stock battery is not sealed... there are caps that can be removed with a phillips screw driver.... the battery case is semi-transparent white and you can check the levels easily by looking at the lines molded to the case... shining a flash light through the fill hole helps! don't need to touch any icky acid.... just make sure the caps are clean before removing them, then just add FRESH distilled water

I recommend putting the battery on a slow charge for a few hours first before putting the car back on the road

anyway, keeping the electrolyte levels topped off ensures a longer battery life :) much better to spend a buck for distilled water from walmart than to pay 100 times that for a new battery
