Can't wait for firmware 5.0 to hit!

Opening isn't that hard, just watch a ton of videos first, to make sure you know what you are doing. I changed my Bold's bezel, trackball, buttons to a black theme, and it's really a Blackberry now :)

Actually , I owned an iphone before switching over to bell. I was leaning towards the tour becuase I like the qwerty keyboard, but I want to be able to maximize my data usage. The storm seems like it would be easier to surf the net with, watch youtube vids, etc.

How do you Tour owners find browsing the web ? Difficult ?

Pretty much the same phone in terms of features. The tour is just a bit more updated in some features.

It comes down to weather you prefer touchscreen or the traditional keypad + trackball.

Go test em out at the store.

Not sure if this link works but heres a comparision of the two.

the "clickable touchscreen" on the Storm is a joke. it is basically one big button. when typing, you have to press down on the screen and wait for it to register before moving on to the next letter. this severely cripples your typing speed...it was a good idea for those that want tactile feedback, but poor execution.

they should have made the option to 'disable' the tactile feedback so you could speed type with the touchscreen only.

the Storm also had a >50% return rate in the first few weeks of its release.

for those reasons, i held out on the Storm and just picked up a Tour (which has a black trackball)

Yup, I noticed that too ... the clickable screen really does hamper typing speed. I can only hope this is improved on the Storm 2 (9550) , which should be released soon.

If things still seem laggy, do a battery pull to free up some memory. For some strange reason sometimes when I do FW upgrades my ish gets laggy as hell. It may also sort other smaller problems out at the same time (camera, facebook syncing with contacts etc).

Might want to also look into he new leaked BBM for a little more speed. I'm running it right now and my 8900 and is a little more "peppier". The interface is also 100 times better :chuckle

I'm on my second Storm. Don't get me wrong, it's a crazy phone and I love it. I don't recommend it cuz if the screen goes, you're up a creek without a paddle. That's what happened to me.

The Tour is the newest and is a cross between the Storm and the Bold. It is also a world phone. I'd say go for the Tour. If you wanna wait it out, the Storm 2 and the Onyx are on the way. The Storm 2 should address the faults of the original. The Onyx adds wi-fi.

Yep, there's a leaked version of BBM 5.0. Can't wait for the official version cuz it is awesome! No need to ask for PINs when adding a new contact, just scan their barcode!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5peoxXJHM4) Muuuuch quicker. Easy broadcasting of messages. SMS text support within BBM and more. Version 5 of the operating system for current BB's looks really promising!

It's like a cross between the Javelin and the Bold.

A friend of mine has a Storm and she says its a pita when you are typing lengthy emails. Blackberry's need qwerty keyboards. I love my Bold, and would definitely recommend a Tour.

BBM 5.0 leaked version still has a lot of bugs, and often messed up my conference chats. Downgraded for now, waiting for the official 5.0 os to hit.

Must be me, but I'm fine with typing on the Storm regardless of message length. I'm more comfortable typing in portrait view with full QWERTY than in landscape view. I dunno, maybe it's cuz I play piano??? :chuckle

I bought a used BB 8830 World Phone to use as my backup while waiting for my Storm warranty replacement. Solid phone, nice keyboard, but it's just as big as the Bold, maybe even bigger. Unfortunately it only comes with a 2.5mm headset jack instead of your standard 3.5mm headphone jack so you'd need to buy an adapter if you want to connect it to your car or use regular headphones. Other than that, I'd totally recommend this phone.

Nope bluetooth can work between different devices. It's hard to explain, but basically if you want to receive a file, you need to give the sender a passcode to ok the transfer. They punch in the code and you should be good to go. It's supposed to be this easy, but most times it isn't lol.

You iPhone wannabees!!!

So I'm still using the first-gen Curve (8310). Had it since Jan 2008. From factory it was a 4.2 app version.

Upgraded to 4.5.0.99 a few months back. Was happily surprised with the new features/UI aesthetics.

Slowly after tho I noticed the phone acting up. During a call, it would suddenly get interference and (usually) shut off.

Then I started noticing when I use the phone for non-phone items (typing a text msg, check email) it would randomly shut off as well.

These experiences have been shared by many in the Blackberry forums. The only way to get the unit to power back up is either battery-pull or plug-in power.

Very recently (the other night) I downgraded to 4.5.0.81 which has been recommended as one of the more stable versions. Battery prob still exists. Luckily I ordered a C-S2 battery online and am waiting for Canada Post to do their thang.

I will NEVER go Apple. I don't own nor use a single Apple product and don't plan to. Nothing against them. Just prefer not to fall into that i-style. :)

I've been without my Storm for 1 month...I felt disconnected. No BBM, no email, no music, no camera, no voice notes, no GPS, no weather updates. That whole month waiting for my replacement Storm sucked! I felt ashamed when I had to pull out my LG TM250 (http://www.comparecellular.com/compare_phones_manufacturer_details.asp?l=&PhoneID=259) phone. It has a 2 color screen: green and black. I had to superglue the battery to the back of the phone because it wouldn't clip on anymore. The ringtones were so cheezy...it sounded like a bee dying.

Thank God I finally have another Storm!

My trackball used to be white, When it was brand new a month ago, Now its yellow. I own a pearl flip and I also notice that the outside gets scratched up pretty damn easily, the inside buttons also carry dirt which touches the inner screen and scratches it up when closed. The phone lags sometimes when I have unread notifications, I also really do hate that I'm notified of everything. Mail, SMS and Calls is fine, but nothing is stored as a separate entity.

Hey everyone...

Check out www.zedge.com...I used to download a ton of ringtones and sound effects from that site and its all free. AFAIK, they also have wallpapers and such.

another site I use is http://www.funformobile.com

basically people upload their own ringtones and wallpapers. It's got a ton of stuff, and usually has all the mainstream stuff you'd want.

I bought a 4gig SD card for my curve..I just use mp3s from it as ringtones = free.

For themes I usually surf crackberry.com and only get free themes..currently using the new PRO theme released. I grab my apps from there as well.

Only app worth paying for so far is Shazam I find. Anything else I can usually find something free that does the same thing.

Ok, so I thought I'd post here since I have NEVER owned a Blackberry (I am an iPhone user and always will be)... but my mom just got herself a Rogers BB work cellphone. My question is, can these be unlocked (since we are all on Fido service) ? And how much do you think the unlocking would run for ?

If you take it to Pacific Mall (ie: Fido store by south entrance) you can get it done for $20-$30. Takes them a few minutes.

You might as well switch over too. We already went head to head and we know who came out on top. :star:winner:star

The 9700 is the new Bold with trackpad. The 8520 Curve in this article also has a trackpad if I'm not mistaken. Good news for Rogers customers next month. it's pretty badass!!! it's pretty much similiar to that of MSN if I had to compare it to anything. Mutli chats, more icons, more options. It's pretty cool for now!! UNTIL it starts to mess up I'm sure. LOLLLL

Here is my quandary. I'm currently using a BB 8830 on Bell. I'm tempted to jump to Rogers for the 9700. The quandary is Bell is supposed to launch HSPA early next year. If HSPA is coming Q1 2010, I'd be willing to wait it out, but if it's actually going to be Q3-Q4, I don't want to wait that long.
Bell is getting the Storm2, but I have no interest in a touch screen BB.

I believe soft launch is supposed to be end of this year (Oct-Nov). I'd expect it early next year as they obviously want to have things fully functional for the Olympics.

Yeah, one of my friends is in a similar scenario. He's with Bell but is also waiting for HSPA so he can get/use the new iPhone. I bet the cell provider game changes when HSPA goes into effect. Right now it's Rogers > Bell.

I had the previous bold and went through almost 6 or 7 of them and ended up buying the javelin which i have replaced like 3 or 4 times aswell. These BB's are not meant for the stress that i put them through. I am on the phone alot texting or calling but these phones keep locking up on me freezing and simploy resetting on me right in the middle of use. Its not cool especially when you buy the phone outright for 750$ cash in hand no plan or any of that

Always make sure your phone has the lastest firmware loaded. When you buy a new phone it may already be 2 or more versions behind. A friend has a curve on on her forth replacement. Told her to get pissed at Rogers and demand a NEW phone no refirb or free upgrade to a Bold.

I use a Bold and have had no issues. Just uploaded 5.0 beta. Very nice features and browser much quicker.

I'm still using my storm on telus, and have been pretty happy with it's performance. Leaked OSes ftw! I'm kinda interested to play with the storm2 as it has a new screen system (no more dollar-store clicky screen apparently), and has muuuch more internal memory (= less crashing/freezing). Kind of upset they didn't implement the "snapdragon" processor (1ghz), but supposedly the storm1 guts with extra memory makes for a winning combination thus far.

Telus is also releasing it's HSPA (Bellus joint project) soon, projected to be at the very least large-group tested towards the end of the year. *cough* next gen iphone *cough*

What OS are you running? I'm running Bell's official .151 and am pretty happy with it. I used to run a lot of leaks and hybrids before until I loaded .151. It's pretty quick and stable. I have had a few random reboots though but not enough to annoy me.

Yeah, i'm running .151, although a much earlier release, probably from another carrier. I've tried the later OSes, but have found that either they're super-fast but cannot run apps/have browsers missing, or that they're so completely buggy that it crashes every 5 minutes.

Funny thing though, I fully plan on bringing my phone in for extended warranty exchange for a new phone, and intend on loading one of those crappy OSes to prove how "defective" it is.

Got a new Curve 8900 last week, the back cover when fully locked lifts up at the sides VERY easily, as in you can put your nail in the gap and just pull it up a few mm's. I called Rogers and they're like "oh they're all like that"....then I went to my buddy's house to see his, and it doesn't do that. Called them back and they're sending me a brand new phone LOL.

Also, has anyone ever wondered what happens if when you send back your phones in the provided pre-paid envelopes that if it ever got lost in the mail they would still charge you? I mean its not registered mail, so there's no proof you ever sent it. So I guess what I'm saying is you could be an honest person and send the defective phone back in the mail and if it doesn't get there you get screwed and charged.....or you be dishonest and say you sent it back and keep both phones and when they go to charge you, you plead the case that Rogers should have pre-paid registered mail, and they take the same risk the consumer would when shipping regular.....

BBM 5 (2.5) will pushed to devices starting at 8pm October 7th.
By: withteeth4 | Date: Wed, 10/07/2009 - 15:34
I can't give away my sources, but i can confirm to all that bbm 5 will be pushed via a (VPL) icon.

If the icon doesnt show, do a reboot or a register now and it should appear. This will start as of 8pm eastern time

The new BBM 5.0 is amazing!! I held off installing the leaked version that came out a while back. I knew about the features but never actually saw it in action. Here's a couple of new highlights:

1) BARCODE SCANNING: You're in the club, the music's crazy loud and you're trying to get someone's number/pin but you just can't hear him/her? But really you're afraid to get close because your armpits smell like skunk. NO PROBLEM! Just scan their barcode using the cam on your phone. DONE!

2) E-MAIL CHAT: You and your friend have successfully cheated on a multiple choice exam via BBM. Now you want to sell the answers to your colleagues who are writing it next? NO PROBLEM! Email your BBM conversation to those who pay up! DONE!

3) BLACKBERRY GROUPS: Rewind a bit...there's a bunch of students that want the answers and you want to make sure you get paid? NO PROBLEM! Create a BB Group called CHEATERS. Add those you know, and others can add those you don't. Then create a group calendar event with the meeting place and time. Go get your money! DONE!

4) SEND LOCATION: (Not sure if this is new or not) You paid one of your girls to spy on your boyfriend to see if he's really cheating. She follows him all the way to the other end of the GTA. Bam! Sure enough she ends up witnessing the kissing and hugging and holding hands. Unfortunately she doesn't exactly know where she is. NO PROBLEM! Tell her to hit Send Location and you get a map/link sent to your BB showing you where she is. You're on your way! Earrings off, heels in hand! DONE!

BBM 5.0...NO PROBLEM! :chuckle

Send location is cool, I like it opens up on the map, definitely cool, the could be good when road tripping with people and you get separated.

Bar code is cool, you can save your barcode as a picture and upload it for others to scan.

Groups I doub't I will use much.

Broadcast message - by far awesomest, now I can spam my entire list at once. First thing I used after installing bbm 5.0, I spammed my list letting everyone know it was in app world.

I read that sms via BBM might be in the future..This would be awesome for me as work sort of frowns on sms'ing from our phones, as it's not in their corporate plan.

Profile pics are taking a while to load on mine too :|

You have to manually set them or link them to that specific contact in your address book, if you have a photo of them set up when they call you. I think that's how it works. I only have select ones as well. Just the ones that I have set for photo caller ID or ones that I've manually set.

Try that maybe?? I'm not entirely sure :)

I'm using 8310 BTW. Total File is around 57 or 58MB for me.

I installed only what I needed from the OS package and on top of that only have Opera browser, Google Talk, MSN, an invoice/cheque splitter/calculator and now BBM 5.

For those of you tempted, here's a heads up:

- I backed up my personal BB messenger's contacts against an email address
- For convenience-sake, I restored the list onto my work BB

Now everyone I message via the work BB thinks i'm messaging them from my personal BB. It seems restoring a messenger list from another device also sticks the original PIN onto the restored device.

The Bold2 feels nice (I played with it about 2-3 weeks ago), but I was reading something about the mobile processors out there, and it seems RIM really cheaped out on this one. It's a bit more power efficient than the original, but offers no processor-related advantages. It does, however, come with an additional 64mb of application memory over the orignal.

The realist in me is screaming for me to stay away from the storm2/iphone, but the kid in me is really curious about it. I played with a pre-production storm2 in August, and it's a totally different machine...

A friend of mine currently has the Blackberry Onyx 9700. However, it could be an early production. It works with Rogers. Almost everything works but except as soon as someone calls him, the screen turns white and shuts off. However, his Onyx has a trackball and his OS is 5.1. I talked to a friend of mine who works at RIM and he confirmed that the phone that my buddy has is indeed the Blackberry Onyx 9700. Keep in mind, He has had this phone in Toronto 6 months ago.

Whoever I tell this too, no one believes me. I guess I have to get Phil and show him in person to confirm it.

SilentJay
10-17-2009, 03:36 AM
It definately has it's quirks, bugs, and pitfalls - but it's a decent phone if you can overcome/overlook them.

I saw my friend again at a party tonight - he had the Verizon onyx and the storm2 on him. I can almost 100% say that I won't be getting the storm2 now. As much as I love the huge screen, the click is almost completely gone now. You really have to mash on the screen to get it to do what you want, and the click response just feels like... you're not supposed to click, and you're actually breaking the backing :P Onyx is nice though - He has what is supposed to be the shipping OS loaded on it, and it's really responsive. So for now, its iPhone 3GS or Onyx.

They are identical as far as processor and camera goes, but the storm2 does have more internal memory. The screen is really the only thing that stands out between the two models; the storm1 has a clickable screen that is supposed to simulate pressing a key, supported by a single button mechanism under the screen.

The storm2 has 4 "piezo" (spelling?) mechanisms under the screen, and is supposed to be able to accomodate multiple simultaneous keystrokes. Having owned the Storm1 and playing with the storm2, I personally find that the Storm2 is built on an already "non-preferred" platform. The new clickable screen is stiff and unresponsive.

If they're like any of the other telecom "fee consultants", they pour over your calls and chargeable services used, and try find either billing mistakes or patterns and try to fit you into a better plan. Fees charged against corporate customers are often a percentage of what is saved after the changes take effect, i'm not sure how it works with regular accounts though.

there goes my super sweet plan then.

You and me both, sister... We won't know for sure if we can twist Telus' arm for better plans until their network goes live, but it doesn't look good.

this sort of scares me.. lol
but maybe i can try it out...

Two of my friends ended up getting awesome plans for ~$35 per month, saving them around ~$30 per month. They also ended up getting a better deal on the hardware. They were charged ~$150 for the service.

I don't even really care about HSPA to be honest... I just want a new BB as the pearl isn't cuttin' it anymore. 3G is more than enough and I've almost made the switch to Rogers a few times. Hell, if Bell won't even let me keep my sweet plan, then I might as well switch over. 3G is good enough.

Ok, so charged $150 for the service they provided, but how much did he get his blackberry for? I wonder if it's really worth it or not. I guess it doesn't hurt to inquire as to what can be done for me, I don't have to agree to go along with it right.. hmm.

You're on a Pearl? Man, what a trooper. In getting a new phone though, you may want to try calling themselves, and perhaps doing a little "social engineering" with a retentions service rep, and seeing what you can get on your own.

Trooper indeed, but I make due with what I have. It's not the worst phone I've had, I'm just picky and a stickler for new technology and pretty technology at that.

Oh, and Bell put up all their new phones and have info on the HSPA network now. I've been staring at the 9700 all morning. hahaha
