View Full Version : Louder engine noise at start up

Okay, so my 09 GT is at 7000km's and I'm starting to hear a louder hissing sound from the engine bay. I pop the hood and notice it coming from the belts or within that area. The RPM's idle at 1 on a start up (if its been sitting for a while) and then drop down to about 450-600rpm. Which to me is about right.

Once driving, you can hear it but within 5 minutes it goes away.

I been looking through the forums and searching for this issue. I have read about it being the belt tensioner and if not the belts as well.

I had this since April and only 7000km's. Could it possibly be an issue with the tensioner already? Or belts for that matter?

Anyone with any experience in this situation? Any issues with the 09's? Which dealerships are most aware of this situation and be willing to fix it. Given they know what they are doing.

That's the belt tensioner. It makes noise when it rains or whenever its damp outside during cold start. Once the engine warms up it goes away. There is a thread about that issue.

Thank you Maxspeed3. :)

I called Westowne Mazda and got it in. They said they needed to hear it on a cold start so I left the vehicle over night. We'll apparently the next morning they never called me, so I had to call them to find out. They said they heard the noise, said it was the belts. They told me they added some lubricant and retested two hours later.

They then told me if I hear the noise again, bring it in and they will replace it. Reason they didn't replace right away is because after inspection and noting it only had 7000km, the belt was still in perfect shape.

They never addressed anything to do with the tensioner. I found the service fair but I am wondering if they missed the issue completely?

Any thoughts?

i am hearing the same noise aswell on cold start ups only not during wet or damp situations its like a whistle or something being forced out of something and i have an 04 an outside mechanic said it could be an starter/alternator issue :S but i doubt it
