All I can is FINALLY!!
BUT, in the article is says
CUPE Local 416 president Mark Ferguson said the next step is for the city to make a deal with striking inside workers represented by CUPE Local 79. He said the outside workers' deal would only be put to a ratification vote once the inside workers have an agreement as well.
The strike is not expected to end until then.

ya but they won't be going back to work until the "inside workers", different union Local, come to an agreement as well.
until then, the "outside workers" are still picketing.
They should shut the F up and clean up the damn dump sites and do their job.

sheesh.. I don't like how they say they came to an agreement BUT they won't be going back to work until all the "inside works" and the "outside works" agree on the deal..
sorry, I jumped the gun a bit since I didn't read that entire article before posting.. stupid unions..

that is exactly the reason why the government didnt need to act as quick as they should have. lol the pressure from everyone on those who are on strike must be huge. (besides they know they cant live off $200 a week going on strike)
and the government saved alot of money this month lol

I'm sorry, but what are the legal justifications for doing this? Other than the fact that not resuming garbage pick-up is the most important leverage CUPE has to force the city's hand while dealing with the inside workers' union local?
It seems to me that if you have reached a tentative deal, your responsibility to your local's members is to put it to a ratification vote and get them back to work.
I hope they didn't get those sick days paid out. Screw them. The rest of us don't even get 18 sick days let alone getting paid for the sick days we don't take. Its sick days, not vacation days.
I'm glad its over and they have finally stopped their whining... now get back to work and clean up the disgusting mess you've caused. :complain

they have SECURE and high paying jobs with LOADS of benefits. it makes people even more infuriated because so many others have been losing their jobs and these people go on strike...

It's like the strike up here of the Nickel workers. The price of Nickel plummeted with the recession causing thousands of layoffs and a couple plants to close.. and now they're on strike for longer contracts?

I agree, it obnoxious that they are on strike with all the people that are desperate for work.

You have to keep in mind that you cannot fault all City workers as it is those at the table who are really dictating the strike. Quite a few of the workers would be more than glad to return to work and see some income but the hold up is at the table. Those negotiating the contracts are forcing the hand of the union, so I don't think it is fair to say that they are all being obnoxious and that none of them deserve any sympathy because as far as we know, it was not a unanimous decision to strike and there is a good chance that there was a population of the City workers that voted against it but were vetoed by the majority. Bottom line, general statements shouldn't be made to the population as a whole, progress is being made and I'm sure we all would like to see this done and over with.

lol...I wonder how many ppl in York Region actually helped their friends and relatives by "taking in" their garbage...or how many just flat out laughed at the friends and relatives instead south of Steeles...

The general statements are directed towards the ones who facilitated or caused the strike. obviously we can't say Jim, Bob, Larry, and start naming each and every person. Or name every person excluded.

I dunno what deal they got, but all I know is...every yr, I get 8 sick days...if I don't get sick, well, good for you, you get to work. And no, I don't get to bank them for next yr. And when I retire, I don't have 6 mos of sick days as my little nest egg. I hope I will not retire into poverty, like that tear jerker of a radio ad, by working for a fair wage and investing wisely.
This isn't meant to offend anyone, but that's basically how a lot of ppl feel when looking from the outside...
Some guy at the track, we were chatting, said that it amounts to an avg of over $100,000 per worker when they retire...

If that is the case then Why has nobody been bashing Mayor Miller and his cloney's? They are culprits also!.Why weren't the workers legislated back to work weeks ago? ...it definately is a health issue!.
Remember there is two sides to this thing and each have their agendas...So let's not go bashing just the workers whom I am sure didn't want this strike to start with.

Believe me, I am not happy with Miller either, but I just haven't posted.
Essentially, goes back to the old saying: 2 wrongs don't make a right.
The majority elected for a strike, and to me, for all the wrong reasons. Each person has a voice and a choice.
The choice of resolving Miller is to boot him out of office after his term is up for a better alternative (if it exists).
It was never my intention to appear 1 sided. Apologies.

Sure, the gov't saved a lot of money last month - but will now have to pay all garbage collection overtime pay just to catch up. That plus revenue lost from Centre Island, Ferry Service, etc - Toronto will be losing TONS more $$$.... :complain
Not to offend any people here who were on the picket line, but I hate unions (they encourage mediocraty) - in the States I saw a huge veterinary hospital close due to union issues (no one wanted to buy out the hospital because the union went along with the sale).
But, hey, will be great when this whole strike is officially over...

Doesn't the union have to ratify the deal before the strike is really over? If the workers don't agree/ratify the deal, this would be for nothing right?

yeah, if they don't ratify it, it'll be all for naught.
but there are strikers that are just as fed up as the public; plus they don't get their strike pay unless they picket, and the strike pay isn't that great to begin with, not when they're used to making $25+/hour.
so, chances are good that they'll agree to the deal

exactly, 2 sides to every story.
from the beginning, though, this was a no-win situation for Miller. the unions were the ones that put him in power for his 2 terms, but his public image was that he was too soft with unions ....i.e. contracts going to unionized workers over cheaper private sector/non-unionized workers in City Hall.
so, does he roll over and cave to union demands prior to the strike? or does he take a "stand" to show to the public that he's not a union softie? in either case, Miller's term as mayor of TO is done next year...unless he's the best of a bad bunch again; which would be a shame because TO hasn't had a good mayor in a long time.
legislation wasn't an option as Windsor was already into week 10 or so of their garbage strike and the provincial govt couldn't risk a PR scandal of favouring toronto over windsor (small town ontario) -- granted toronto is far bigger than windsor with more population and thus way more garbage.

garbage strike is prolonged.
the ratification vote that was supposed to be this morning at 7am has been "postponed until further notice". the leader of local 416 said that they never did have a tentative deal just the "framework for a deal" so there was nothing to vote on...yet.
best part, the people that showed up to vote never saw the details of the deal and they received a voicemail at 7:15am stating that the vote was postponed.
the shell game continues....

Negative. Vote will go tomorrow (again)
Mayor Miller has feeling that latest offer will be rejected by council. So an end to the strike is not concrete yet. For now, it's not over.
Stop whining and get back to work. You don't have it that bad. :bang

The unions are all back to work for now assuming City Council votes yes for the contract.
I am part of the union and although I got a great deal I didn't want to strike in the first place. We voted to strike, I voted no, but if everyone else votes yes, I am stuck going along. Hope people realize that just cause upper brass is saying something, that doesn't mean the workers have a say in it. The majority of the workers would rather be working and getting paid, they have families to feed, we all aren't greedy people.

Fire every single one of em, close up shop and privatize everything.
put up a non-unionized job collecting garbage for $12/hr and you'll see just how long the application line up will be.
screw the city workers and screw the unions. I'm fed up of this crap just as much as the next guy.
economic times are rough, so many people are unemployed right now and here we have people are bitching and complaining about thier jobs? give me a break.

I totally agree with this statement.... They are lucky they didnt fire them, or find a reason for them to quit... Because, a lot of people, good hard workers lost their jobs, and these people go on strike, and know they are safe from being fired... They not only handle a lot of green garbage, they also have a lot of the other green stuff... SELFISH! / GREEDY!

what was the resolution in windsor?
i was reading the articles on the resolution in toronto and they are basically getting everything they asked for.
Pretty much the current employees got what they wanted in the end (more money) and the new hires pretty much got screwed from my understanding.. They all walked away with something.
The grass is so bad in Windsor that they had to hire ecologists to come in and sweep the parks to check if it is safe to mow the grass and do all the garden work. Apparently, new species of birds in the area are nesting and so are small animals.

It's totally unacceptable the amount of power that the unions have.

Oh man trust me I know. FFS, Toyota wanted to come to Windsor a few years back, but anytime they were here looking to pick property, the CAW would bark at them telling them they were in the wrong place and no matter what happened, they would become unionized. Well, Toyota said have a great day, and walked out.
I know unions were formed because so long ago work conditions were horrible, etc. But with all the protection that the work and labour board have implemented now, there is no need for unions. All they do is bastardize production by letting the loose screws in the line get away with anything they please. It almost seems impossible to be terminated from a job that has union protection.
