View Full Version : Sponsor Whoring the Forum

I've been a long time member here and I understand that having forum sponsors is very important to keep the board up and running. I think its great that TM3 has plenty of sponsors and that we are flourishing as a community with events and meets planned.
Lately I've been having an issue with one specific forum sponsor and that is NextMod which is owned by SuperShyGuy. Don't get me wrong, I love his products and what he does for this forum and our cars. How he is able to create replica parts for half the price of the originals makes modding much more affordable. However, the way he has been "whoring" himself in every post trying to sell his products is unacceptable. I think its fair to say that forum members are smart enough to browse the sponsor section should they need to purchase an item.
My suggestion is to prohibit sponsors from cluttering useful threads with advertisments. If they wish to do so, they can send a PM to the user in need but having the rest of us read "I have HIDs in stock, everything in stock" 5x a day is just torture.
Let me know what you guys think.
Red.

without interjecting with an opinion siding with anyone, I just want to say that perhaps this is a sign of the tough economic times that we're currently in.

peter is a great guy and makes a lot of effort to make our modding hobby both profitable for him and when possible more affordable for us (in that exact order).
he runs a business and we all understand that he needs to advertise his offers and services just like any other sponsor does, but i agree 100% with the OP that maybe we should get some sort of advertising/promotion guidelines for the forum.

I'm a newbie here but I gather this about the stuff being added to the "Nextmod" section right?
Isn't that what it's for? So he can add any new stuff and promotions that are going on?

I think he generally does follow the rules:
5: If a member posts a question about certain product availability outside of your forum you may respond by indicating to them by way of a post that you have those items and direct the poster to review your section of the forum.

No, they are pointing out that in a thread just talking about a subject, if a sponsor had it for sale or could get it, they would post in that thread saying "I have it" or "I can get it, let me know". When it isn't their "section".
Example. I start a thread asking someones opinion on after market seats. A sponsor sees I'm in the market for seats and says "I have that" or "I can get that for you" even though I was only asking peoples opinion. Occasional use of this isn't too bad, but the OP is saying it's a bit over the top.
I'm not going to say my opinion for or against right now...just trying to clarify I guess...

Jeremy,
It is my understanding that sponsors can add whatever they like to their OWN section. The problem is, Peter likes to post in 60% of the public threads lately commenting on how he has the product "X" being discussed in stock. This has been going on for awhile. This is a techique used by sponsors (check out Mazda3Forums.com where its a bigger problem). They pretend to talk about the subject being discussed and post a small comment so that their signatures are there for advertisment purposes.
In NextMod's case, they don't even try to write a small comment.

For those trying to follow: Here is a recent example. The thread is talking about how the car looks like when the OEM grille is removed. So a member asks the question how would the car look like with the "open mouth grille"? The member is NOT even asking about "where/how much/" to get the item. It might lead to that and he might eventually ask "Where would I get this grille?". Then a mod or another member can says "Check with NextMod or any other sponsor".

The thing though is in your post in that link, you say at least take it to PM. However, accroding to the rules link ( here (http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=32135) ), there's the following rule...
6. Sponsors may not advertise through the Private Message (PM) of the board unless a member specifically requests this.

I guess PM is the lesser of the two evils. Its public soliciting vs private soliciting. That is why I brought this topic up for discussion. I want to see how everyone else feels. If everyone is cool with it, then just let it be. Personally I feel its wrong.

i agree that posts by sponsors advertising what they have for sale/in-stock/etc should be kept to their particular section of the forum.
if a sponsor comes across a thread outside of their section where they see a need to advertise their wares, they should PM the person who they perceived to have asked the question.
people are smart enough to go to the sponsor section to see what the sponsors have for sale and don't need the constant reminders in 500 (hyperbole) different HID threads that they have them in-stock.

As a sponsor.....I think it's fine to link to your section like the rule entitles because people don't visit sponsor pages to see what you got. They search, find a thread but don't know a sponsor may sell it. I still get PM's to see if I still sell caliper stickers yet I have threads in my section and a website advertising them....
Peter's case is that he can get pretty much get any product out there. So him to advertise and say I can get that for you in a bunch of threads may be too much like OP stated. Posting a link to a thread in his section would work, as the rule is set.
It's like having a thread called "Ill get it for you" and have clients post whatever they want and link to it. So I can see the predicament here.

Business is business. If I sold car parts for a living , I would do exactly what Peter is doing. I'm sure most of you would do the same too.
However, I do find it a bit excessive at times .... esp in SP3GT's HID thread.

I realize that. However, with any rule, it's always a toss up on how it's interpreted.
I guess it all depends what threads a person is viewing. I used to find stuff like that a problem. But I guess I stopped seeing it since I don't really visit the threads it's happening in.

Hmmm.. personally I dont have a problem with it since he is running a business and yes, times are tough... gotta make sure you represent out there. I guess I don't mind his "sponsor whoring" because I'm one of those people that barely go on sponsor-related parts of this forum... so if I happen to be reading around someone else's thread or a thread I created (one that's not on the sponsor forum) and he says something like, "I have this in stock. Let me know if you want it." ... then it is ok with me. At least I know he carries that product should I decide to pick said product up in the future... and I'll know what NextMod has to offer in terms of products.
I'm on Peter's side on this one but it is all subjective !

Doesn't bother me personally. If you're a sponsor - should have some perks besides your own section. I think it's fair for a sponsor to remind some folks in threads that they have something in stock that someone is enquiring about (if even only asking about the product and not how much, etc) - as too few people here use the search link - my g-d, how many threads about CAI's can we have???? So obviously, some of the people will be too lazy to search through the sponsor links as well.
Maybe a limit (of say one) on a thread of "reminding" people that you have something, or "give me shout if you are interested in purchasing product X" - it is tougher times now, and you have to be aggressive in this market.
I don't think PM should the answer - as then it's soliciting business personally - and not everyone wants that.
BTW, if anyone has any pets that need advanced surgery - give me a shout!!!! :)

Playing both sides of this discussion. The problem with your suggestion in bold is that, just like the search feature, people sometimes don't read through the full thread and just jump to the end. So if a sponsor were to put an "ad" in the middle of a thread saying they have it, some people might not read it if they jump through the thread without reading it.

NP. There is a limit but most of the time it's not enforced.
The maximum size of your custom image is 600 by 150 pixels or 14.6 KB (whichever is smaller).(Taken from the User CP menu)
This should be the height of image and text combined, but those details aren't mentioned anywhere.

I've seen warnings before for people who had a signature too big. However you're right about nothing (from what I can see) about text and image combined.
It's hard to judge for width as well (if you put text beside a picture)...and what if you don't have a picture and only text? It would be hard to pinpoint the exact height in pixles because people can have different font settings.

But again, it can be different based on the font people use. In that case, I can agree that it does look a bit big...maybe if the person used a different font size. But it might look big even then if the person looking at it had their browser set to a bigger font if they have problems viewing text online.
I can understand being lenient...but for some things, there could be more being enforced.
Like in the case of what you just listed, maybe a nested table to help format it better? Putting the text beside the picture so that the overall height isn't too big but still showing the info?
For me I'm usually on a 22"+ monitor so my resolution brings the size of everything down a little making them a little more tolerable.
Wait, was this topic about sigs and avatars or Sponsor Whoring?
:gone
Same, at work, I'm on a 22" monitor as well so doesn't bother me too much. But when I go home, I'm on a 13" macbook so it does make scrolling a bit more difficult.
And the thread started as whoring...but sigs and avatars can be considered it too if you have a lot of info about your place or stuff in your signature. As an example, in Peters case, he has the image, his work hours, a link to a thread saying his grand opening (which is now over) which makes it pretty long. So in this case, both points are valid in the term of "sponsor whoring"
This discussion is FUN :pop

EDIT: Re-read it...above statement still stands...but maybe some guys are self consious about their "signature length" and would like others shorter to make up for their lack of one?

Mods, maybe we can set up a poll to vote.
I am sure there are people out there with an opinion but don't like the public spotlight. If everyone is okay with sponsors whoring threads, then we can put this to rest. If not, TM3 can make changes to sponsorship rules.
Put two options:
1) Prohibit sponsorship whoring
2) Leave sponsorship rules "as is"
This is a binary vote.

From what I've seen, the posts that SSG makes are 1 line or 2 at most. (in stock, blah blah)
I don't like the posts, but I don't care for them. Is it that hard to scroll an extra cm to skip that post? Or if you don't have a scrolly mouse then 1 extra click on the arrow.
I'm sure RR or Fobio is going to jump in here and call me a Nextmod lover/fanboy any moment now.
How about do a vote on
1) prohibit sponsors to let others know he has something instock or can get something outside of the sponsor area
2) Leave sponsorship rules as is

To be fair, RedRaptor was using SuperShyGuy as an example. He's not the only one to post a lot of "I have it" or "I can get it for you". The issue I believe he is trying to point out is that sometimes, it goes outside of "occasional" and seems like it's spamming the boards. Some might not mind it. Others might hate it with a passion. RedRaptor was just trying to find out who else might have thought it annoying and seeing if it could be changed to make it happen less often.

implying something ?
No...and I really have no idea what you mean.
My point, if I need to spell it out:
Vendors do whatever they can to sell...that's what vendors do. From all the marketing I see from vendors, the most effective method for me, is thru word of mouth. If I'm friends with Tokic_o and he tells me about his hook-up called Peter who's got what I need, I'll likely contact Peter to find out more.
Having a member rep your stuff and promote that way, is very effective, and removes some of the stigma of "post whoring". But I digress, as anytime anyone jumps into to a thread with a "financial" motivation, it will be very apparent and frowned upon...
it's a fine line...that all vendors and their friends have to walk.
EDIT: and I agree that RR is only using SSG as AN EXAMPLE...he even stated his sister will be getting some NextMod stuff...so let's not turn this into RR vs SSG...that's just not it. Besides, Peter is taking this in good stride. And his positive responses so far means that he's willing to make adjustments as per the community....let's keep it light, as I'd hate for this forum to turn into M3F or M247.

There is one thing about me you need to know and that is, if I have an opinion I will voice it publicly. I am not saying reporting posts to moderator is the wrong way, but I'm not scared to be stoned for my opinions. I have not reported a single post regarding NextMod or any other sponsor regarding the topic of whoring the forum. I created this thread to get a feel of how others feel. Thats why I think having a public vote is a great idea. This has NOTHING to do with hating on NextMod or any other sponsor.

it seems to me by reading this thread that there is not a clear concensus one way or the other, a vote of 55% to 45% (for example) would mean nearly nothing in terms of a directional statement for the mod team to consider.

But so far, this is just people discussing it here. Maybe there will be a bigger opinion if it was a poll. Then it wouldn't be them voicing for everyone to see but could vote a bit private.

Just put the poll up and be done with it. There are tons of people who feel strongly about this either way but don't want to get into the drama. Having the right to vote doesn't hurt so put on your moderator hat and let's make this happen already.

perhaps, though i doubt it.
and a bimodal vote perhaps is to simplistic maybe there are other things to consider?

tons of people feeling strong about it both ways seems to me at least that another sort of solution would be preferable. this is not black and white imo
i have no interest in putting up a poll myself, thanks for the invitation.

I think it really comes down to the question: Does the post add value to the thread?
Some examples:
If the OP is asking "where can I get a Mazdaspeed exhuast" and a sponsor jumps in and says "I've got Vibrant in stock!", well, that's pretty much post-whoring.
Even if the if the question is "where can I can I buy a exhaust system for a good price", posting, "I have Vibrant in stock" is post-whoring, unless the vendor can explain why his price is excellent (e.g. "I have Vibrant on sale for 50% off!).
Finally, replying to "Where can I buy a Vibrant exhaust" with "I have Vibrant in stock" is within bounds.
Oh BTW: I hate big sigs. But I like to leave them turne on as I do read them sometimes!

As for the poll vote. I say leave the rules as they are, but RR, I do very much see your point that sometimes the blatant posting from sponsors (not only Nextmod) has been a little over the top at times. Personally, I just ignore it and keep reading and chalk it up to rights of sponsorship and doing business. I know where and who I need to go too should I need stuff for my cars, so I don't get upset about it.
