View Full Version : Help Finding Work in the Automotive World

The time has come to move careers for me and I have decided that I am going to follow my dreams and get a career in the automotive industry. I know it’s a long shot but I’m hoping that someone here on the board is hiring, or knows of someone in the automotive world looking for a young go-getter to help increase their sales.

For the past two and a half years I have worked as a Director of Small Business Accounts for an advertising company as well as a Media Analyst for the larger accounts. I have learned a lot about marketing products, advertising and sales and truthfully have been very good at it. I have the support of our CEO and VP for this career change and can supply letters of reference regarding my achievements.

I have a BA in Liberal Arts with a minor in Business (marketing) and Political Science. My degree is just a base of my knowledge, I want to get into the automotive world because cars are my passion. I race rally (TSD and soon to be Rally X) and have done a few autocross events, I organize groups of friends to go out and play at Dunnville Autodrome and I have been through every part of my race car build. To get my car done I worked my career job to fund the project, and invested tonnes of sweat equity every night to build my racer. I went from no mechanical knowledge of cars to a point where I am comfortable doing moderately hard repairs like brakes and suspension.

Ideally I am looking for a sales or marketing position with a car manufacture or aftermarket parts producer/supplier, but am very open to any suggestions people may have. If you could help me open any doors into this world it would be much appreciated, and in return I would be more than happy to take you for a spin in my restored 1988 Mazda 323 GTX.

My e mail is patricklogan at rogers dot com

Thanks!

Or Mazda. :)

Mazda is not starving but they are running at a 16.4% loss... under VW, Mitsubishi and Subaru and even lower than Ford.. While Hyundai is at 20.5% Gain... Mazda is running mid pack right now as far as sales in Canada go.. and mid pack in this current auto economy is nothing to brag about

However, Hyundai's number's are misleading. 34% of their sales through for the first quarter of 2009 were due to fleet sales and continued through Q2. They actually had the most fleet sales of any car manufacturer.....asian, european and even domestic. Not trying to knock Hyundai and the great work they have done with their line up but facts are facts.

KIA 16% sales gain has been hugely attributed to fleet sales as well. They are part of Hyundai.

Not to say Mazda is not hurting but don't make it sound like they a falling flat. Being "mid pack" sounds about right for Mazda considering the economy. They don't have a huge marketing budget like the US 3 or Japanese 3. Better than being at the bottom!

Anyways, back on topic: Loganm3. With the market in the hole right now, you face alot of competition with people that are looking to make changes that are already in the sector. Perhaps you should attend some car shows or events and do a bit of networking. Good luck in your search!

I will agree that Mazda is down from the past year... but I have been having the best year yet.

I understand they are part of hyundai.. even if you take away the fleet sales you would still see the koreans on top so the point is moot.

Jeff im glad your doing well and best of luck to you

I can completely relate as I am in the same boat. Everything plays second fiddle to the automotive world in my books but like you have struggled to find openings in this upside down economy. Good luck

If you don't mind me asking, what was your job position?

Actually, by taking fleet sales away, they would be in the same boat as everyone else. 34% is not an insignificant number.

Hyundai YTD - 250, 239 vehicles sold. 34% are fleet sales. Profitabilty drops as well as retained value.

This is what got Chrysler and GM into trouble. Too many going to fleet and inflated sales numbers.

I was under the assumption that hyundai's 33% fleet sales was first quarter... not YTD. But even if it was..

crunch the numbers... take that away along with the compititions fleet sales and they are still above the rest... Anyway This is seriously Derailed..

All manufacturers have fleet sales... gm/ford 20-25%, Toyota 12-15% honda 9-10% etc.. if you take away hyundai's 33% you better take away fleet sales from everyone else

Funny enough I am applying to Kia (god I know right!) but that is the only car marker who has any openings.

Where I'm really looking is to the aftermarket suppliers. Companies like Sparco, Momo, Fast Wheels and any other big name people....I just don't know the small ones.

If anyone can help me think of companies I should put on my "send resume" list it would be appericated
