I was driving downtown today and I exited at the Bayview/Bloor off the DVP and the road there is a bit twisty and goes uphill, while I'm going uphill I was in 3rd and it suddenly pops out.

I was heading to the beach after saw quite a few nice 3's too.

Anyways, driving later I find that when I go on ramps and off ramps on 3rd it will pop out. Now it's gotten worse driving on regular roads it pops out too.

Is this serious? Do I need to bring it into the dealer?

There is a thread around here about adjusting the shifter linkage.... it may be that all that is required is an adjustmentment....

I haven't had a problem like this on my sport GT, but originally thought this was only a speed3 thing. Let us know if this fixes it.

worn/broken motor mounts can cause this... or ultimately, a worn shift fork... using your shifter as a hand/arm rest can cause shift forks to wear out prematurely

Happened to me with 2nd gear. Syncro is gone, it is all covered under warranty. I just suggest not taking it to Ontario Mazda. I took my car there for this problem and had it there for 7 weeks, because they kept messing up other stuff. Basically my car is still not fixed properly and they told me to take the car to another dealership to get it fixed!

Ya, my 2nd gear sometimes grinds too when I shift into it. At first I thought I wasn't depressing the clutch enough but I've made sure I do and it still grinds sometimes.

I'm planning to go to Agincourt so hopefully it gets taken care of.

Just an update for everyone, incase this happens to any of you in the future.

Basically after opening the transmission, my 3rd gear was worn out as well as the sychro. The reverse idler was also changed.

So its not shifter linkage as some of you mentioned.

I had this happen on mine prior to have the transmission COMPLETELY REMOVED! 2nd gear was grinding a little and 3rd gear never popped-out but it did move. Sychros were shot to hell and the forks were grinded down to nothing, eventually just broke down one night, had it fully warrantied through Mazda though. Mazda paid for the tow truck, the rental car for a week and full replacement. Needless to say, I had the car just over a year when this happened and now another year later, tranny is MINT!

..... I think i just got a bad one first time around(?)
