Hey fellow MS3 owners,
Has anyone else had their Mazdaspeed 3 engine replaced due to a manufacture defect?

Not sure about replacement but I may be next to blow. I was tweaking my 104 map last night and I noticed at 19psi of boost from 5000-6700rpm in 3rd gear only my fuel pressure dropped to 780PSI. Time to redo my map.

Wow, so sorry to hear... Not many stock engines have blown. You might be the first. I'm also running stock BTW.
Can you detail when the engine seized (during WOT or otherwise) and what they say is wrong with it specifically?

Sorry to hear man...please tell us as much as you can/feel like.
From "seize", do you mean seized engine due to oil starvation? Manufacturing defect meaning something like a clogged oil path?
Spun crank shaft bearing?

Dealership said that coolant was leaking into the engine through a hole, which caused the engine to seize.
lol same here 2008.5 just blew one 3 weeks ago stock

sounds like an actual busted block, unlike the usual bent rods or exploding pistons.

You blew another one? What, the white MS3 this time? Did the SU mounts disintegrating have anything to do with it eventually blowing?

Not the thread I wanted to stumble upon! OP, this hole... was it a one off / someone having a bad day at the factory, or part of something larger?
Man shit like this makes me want to jump ship before my engine blows. My dealership is pretty cool with me, but I bet that would be put to a quick end if something major blew up.

And don't slow down!!!!!
Officer: Excuse me sir, do you want to explain to me why you chose to street race me off the line?
MS3 owner: Because the street racing fine costs less than a new motor.
Officer: What?
MS3: You see officer, if I drive slow my engine will explode so technically the safe thing to do is to drive WOT all the time.

FYI...there are only 2 replacement Speed3 engines in North America (California) at the moment. I got one of them. So if you blow an engine...you may have to wait a very long time to get one.

Update:
Well new engine arrived at the dealership (tall block...thank goodness). Engine looks so tiny without the exhaust/ turbo, tranny, etc... (which will be transferred over to new engine).
I was told there was a catastrophic failure in the number 3 cylinder (They don't know what happened yet, but will probably open the engine later. You can see the fallen valve down the spark plug hole).
I have to say the Service Manager was very friendly and helpful in explaining the whole situation. He was great to deal with!

Due to the 'catastrophic failure' in the engine, the metal filings from the engine damaged the turbo, intake, cat, etc.. (other parts I can't remember). These too will be replaced.

I think every MS3's engine will blow sooner or later. No word of a lie, just give it time. If mine blows once my finance is done I'm going to build it proper with a cast block, or have it sitting on wood for a while to save for an LSx swap and RWD conversion.

With money anything is possible. If I have a cheap DD by then, which I will if finance is done, then why not? Let it sit a year so I can save. I'm really wishing now that I just bought a cheap, reliable car and a bike to go along with it.
Just imagine someone lifting the hood of a little Mazda station wagon and seeing this...

Hey, they have a conversion for the Focus for a V-8, and people stuff them into Miata's all day long. Why not an MS3? That would be so f'ing wicked..
On a side note, good stuff they are replacing everything; don't complain there! lol.. you get to break-in everything all over again!
Also, I'm glad I bought the 6/160 MAP. If shit breaks, fix it.. its that simple.
Of all the blown motors I hear stories of, it seems 95% have modifications.
Whatever, Mazda will learn when the new MS3 sells half the number the 1st gen did. Then they will be forced to change everything for the 3rd gen.

Another Update:
So yesterday everything was put back together and I got the car back. Car ran smooth. I was happy!
Unfortunately, this morning I was not. I started the car this morning but it ran rough. As I drove out, it stalled (blocking traffic on my street). Managed to restart the car. Ran really rough and engine light came on. Decided to get it towed to dealership.

Well, I managed to take some quick pic's from the original engine that blew.
This is how it should look like (from one of the good cylinders)

This is NOT how it should look like (from one of the bad cylinders)

Notice in this cylinder that there's something missing in cylinder #3

So it wasn't coolant leaking into the engine through a 'hole' then as they originally told you?

I'm really surprised they ordered just a long block instead of a complete crate engine... there was an ms6 here that blew up due to "unknown reasons" :chuckle and a complete crate engine was ordered per mazda DSM instructions... just to be safe that nothing else got messed up... hell, the turbo that was on there was practically new
the crate engine comes with EVERYTHING... spark plugs, coil packs, sensors, turbo/exh mani, intake mani, oil filter, oil cooler
well because of that, the original oil cooler from that ms6 lives on in my 3 :)
surprisingly, there were no metal shavings in it when I flushed the cooler out too

I've seen the #3 injectors go bad on these engines, a lot of them CX-7s... but this is the first time I heard where it got stuck open and flooded the cylinder!
I'm only speculating here --- but I bet Mazda ordered dealerships to replace entire engines with crate engines for two reasons: 1) the most obvious one, it's faster and less work involved to get the car up and running. 2) this allows the engine to be shipped back to Mazda for evaluation to figure out what broke. If they stopped caring about returning the entire engine as a whole, maybe they know what causes these engines to break now and no longer need to analyize broken motors? Again, speculation....

Always hear of a couple still going, normally on MSF (bigger base to go with). Think most of the 'secrets' to our platform have come out and failures tend to be from those who don't take the proper precautions, i.e. heavy bolt ons, but no hpfp.
We know the fuels, oils, issues with the PCV system, service intervals, etc, etc to use so the cars are just running better overall.

if you're going to replace the engine, best to go with something manly
