Hi guys im new to Mazda, just bought an 05 sedan and the engine check was on when I bought the car. what could it be? is there a chance that its on because of the engine oil being dirty, or any type of sensor that usually goes after 100,000 km?
It would be wonderful if you could share your experience
thanks

Grats and welcome to TM3.
Would definitely help if you can obtain the code, but you can do some diy if u dont have a reader.
1. Check gas cap
2. Check engine oil
3. Check Transmission oil
4. MAF sensor (see if its dirty)
5. Reset ecu (pulling the - from battery)
Goodluck!!

no idea guy.
your best bet is to go get it scanned, be it at a dealer, or elsewhere.

Agree with Jon...
Every time i had a CEL it was due to the MAF sensor. I've replaced it twice over 160,000 KM's.
But it never hurts to get it checked out to make sure you know what it is.

Really, the person/dealer that sold it to you should be responsible for the check engine light. If you can make it out to a meet sometime, I have a scanner and can get the code for you.

you know, come to think of it, all my CEL's have been from my MAF sensor as well. running too lean/rich at idle, broken wires, etc etc.

welcom to the boards
How did your car pass safety? You say you just baught it and cars do not pass safety with lights on heck dealers wont even do an emmission test with the light on. I would seriously go back to where i got it from and make them fix it

AFAIK, a CEL will not fail a safety, and it wont fail an emissions test either.
the ebrake cable thing in the other thread will tho.

That is not true the dealership i work at cars are not safetied with any light on because noone knows how severe or minor the light is. As for the emmission tests the car will be denied the etest unless the lights are off. It wont fail but it wont even be put on the machine

i work at CT (i know, i know), and we pass cars with CEL's on. its not a safety concern, but more of a maintenance item. the only thing we check under the hood, is the battery tie down.
as for e-tests, according to my handbook/pretest checklist, i can test cars with a CEL. its more or less the customers responsibility if they want to risk it.
very few cars with CEL's fail.

I am technically dealerbred lol never worked at a small shop or CT or something like that i guess the rules are stricter at dealers

i guess lol.
but as far as emissions testing goes, CT does not make the rules, the ministry does, so i'd imagine the rules would be the same for everyone.
oh well, oh knows. maybe the dealers are just trying to make a few more bucks?

I know that CT does not set the standards but at every dealer i ahev worked at it has been the same concept if theres a light on=no etest

hmm.
well, you know the CT motto.... "it aint my car"
I thought the only way they will not do e-test is if the light is falshing.
Apple auto glass in Belleveille will e-test a car if the check engine light is on..the only way the guy said they will not is if it's flashing.

sounds about right.
a flashing CEL means you have serious problems. such as repeated misfire, or a dead cylinder.

Hey guys thanks for all your replies, I actually don’t have the car yet and I bought the car as is so it’s on me to fix the check engine and e brake. So anyways I know, I should check all the oils and the rest of the stuff you have mentioned. and just found out that my uncle has an OBD2 reader. So I will do that and update you with it as soon as I receive the car, hopefully tomorrow. Oh and one more thing, what is the MAF sensor? Where is it located, and what does it do?
Really appreciate it and will definitely attend some of the meets this summer.

So let me get this straight, You bought the car but didn't take possession yet? You bought it with a Cel light showing and didn't ask to take it to a mechanic to check it out first? .....Please tell me I'm wrong here :whoa

Hey one other question,
How do you reset the computer. By disconnecting the battery for about 2min and then connecting it again?
Oh engine of the car was very smooth so i think its either the engine oil or the air filter is really dirty. gota check that out today when i get the car.
thanks

If your uncle has the OB2 reader then you can clear your codes with that..or you can disconect the battery.
On my old cars i just used my OB2 reader to clear all codes that way i didn't hewv to reset the clocks..lol

A check engine light will NOT be triggered by dirty oil or a dirty air filter. Although it may be dirty I have NEVER seen a code for that before

OK I just connected the car to the OBDII reader and it gave me the error, it wouldn’t read it, what could be the problem. My uncle used this for all his cars so far and it’s always worked. Why wouldn’t it work with my car?

the reader has to be CAN-BUS capable. if the reader is not able to read CAN-BUS, it won't connect to the ecu in the 3

mazda will charge you $60 to diagnose the problem , so stay away from the dealer.

If you're in the GTA go to Jimmy. He charges a reasonable price to pull codes....

ok guys i spoke to my neighbor yesturday and he happend to have the updated reader, and we got the code, its was a P0500 i think which ment that the speed sensor i gone. so now i dont know which one is gone anyone have heard of a speed sensor problem with the 3? and if so which one was it? because there is more then one.
McGuyver_3
08-15-2009, 02:40 PM
Does the scanner that your neighbour has have live readings? This way you could jack up wheel by wheel spin it and see if the speed sensor is reading and find out whichis faulty. If it doesnot go to the dealership or private mechanic and they will be able to help you out

* I believe you also have a thread going about your speedo not working; the CEL is related to your issue with the speedo.
