View Full Version : Rust Proofing from Dealer vs Outside Shop?
I just picked up a new 2010 Mazda 3 GS Sport (after many years of being side-tracked, finally a Mazda owner!)
Its probably been asked a million times, but the pressure sales tactic that the Mazda dealership used to convince me to get it rust proofed through them got me second guessing.
Do places like Krown do just as good of a job as the dealership (in house) for fraction of the price?

Most Krown places do a great job. I find that the only difference is that each location will vary in "discount/deals"
Take it to the dealership and you will pay say 800. If you plan on keeping your car till it dies or more than 10 years I would do the dealership.
If your paying 100.00 each year at Krown, in 10 years you will pay about 1000.00
Quality, they are all good. They all help but they don't guarantee anything!

^That is not exactly true! ...
Dealer undercoating for the most part is totally useless as for one they don't cover all prone areas and the areas they do cover they do a shite job, they use a wax or a tar substance which has been proven to actually retain moisture!.
How many vehicles have you seen on the road 20/30 years old which used dealer undercoating??....Me...NONE! Most all 20/30 year old vehicles still around and showing no rust to very little rust have been 'Oil Sprayed'.
Financially, if you pay $800 at the dealer, you'd have to keep the car for eight years to recoup, whereas with Krown it's a yearly thing @ $100 a year...So in 4 years you decide I hate this car! and sell it, you've saved money.
Krown will give a full warranty on the vehicle aslong as it is brought in within a year of purchase and yearly after that. The warranty is equivelant to the dealers warranty.
Any way you look at it, oil-spray is the way to go, no question.
Oh and don't let these mofos at the dealer tell you Krowning will void the Mazda warranty,...it's absolute bullshit....they love using that one!

The Krown process is the best. In all honestly, the process is the same everywhere with the Krown name. IMO it's not worth the drive to go to a specific Krown centre unless you get a large discount.

Yes, I'm a bit concerned about the dripping.
I park underground in a condo, and they don't like if your car is dripping anything. What's the deal here?

I live in a condo also! All I do is get a couple of old cardboard boxes and spread them down, tape them secure with duct tape to my parking spot (so they don't shift) until the car stops dripping!-(Usually 3 days or so)....Or if you have outdoor visitors parking, get a permit if needed and just park out there....no problemo. :chuckle

The Mazda dealership where I get my rustproofing is "dripless oil spray" It costs $90 at the dealer. Am I just better off going to Krown? Isnt it the same thing?

not all dealerships use the same product so don't dismiss the dealer option until you know what they use and what kind of deal you can get. Airport Mazda uses "RustCheck"
its supposed to be as good as Krown (but they dont have to drill) and its warrantied for ten years on new cars. My 2006 is looking like new so far, we'll see how it works over the longterm.

they use an oil based spray so it supposed to move around or something to seep into everything so for a couple of days there is some dripping off excess spray.
