I am currently with Belair.

When I signed up, they asked if I was going to have winter tires and I said YES. What would happen if I don't put on winter tires and put on all-weather?

Would they pickup on those stuff? Would they not pay out a claim if they find out?

Please let me know! thanks!

Why would you lie in the first place? To save $100 a year? I'm not saying they would deny your claim if they caught you but why risk it over $100?

it makes no sense to lie about something like that..

And if you live in Canada you really should get winters. Difference is night and day.

I was thinking that too; they just took my word for it. I asked if they needed receipts the guy just laughed. Ah well. I've always had winters anyways makes no difference. I think its 5% discount? Im with Bel Air too

Exactly, the risk isn't worth the reward.

Go take a look at Allens GB thread for winter tires, you can find a very reasonable deal...

I am thinking of getting winters -_-

I am just wondering what would happen if I go all-season instead. lol

I didn't lie because my intentions were getting winters at the time and still is. I am just trying to see what other options are out there.

Krazy - you have never owned winter tires before?

I only ask because, once you own a car in Canada with Winter tires, there is no going back. The difference really IS Night and Day :)

Yeah I'm with BelAir too and I started my policy with them in December 2008 and they asked me about winter tires. I said no- because I had my brand new car with its brand new all seasons on it figuring I would be safe.

And trust me when I say I was slipping and sliding all over the place. Those tires are not fun. Likewise, my now ex-bf had winter tires on his 3 and we went out for a drive when it was heavily snowing and he had no issues. Took off from stoplights like it was clear on the grounds. Became very indicative when we were at a stoplight next to a taxi and he accelerated no problem but the taxi was spinning his tires and couldn't get himself moving again.

That's why I'm getting myself snow tires this winter! Not doing another winter on Toyo Proxes :P

Ask anyone that has gone from all seasons to winters and they will tell you the difference. With Canada's crazy winters, why not avoid the white knuckle driving and get the insurance discount ? The last thing you want is trying to explain to your insurance company that you got into an accident which could possibly be avoided with snow tires and you don't actually own a set even though you stated "yes" on the policy.

Yes, in Canada winter tires just make too much sense.

However it is fun to slide a car around in the snow.

Yah, if you were involved in an accident in the winter and didn't have your winters on, then they'd probably drop you fast!! And you'd be left paying for all the damages yourself.

Definitely don't lie.

And yah same as what everyone else said, just buy a set they're sssoooooo worth it.

I tried 17" stock RSA's for 2 winters, then finally got a set of winters. Now whenever a group of us goes out in the snow, I seem to be the only one not afraid of driving.

Ive only got stuck one time, and it wasn't from the tires, it was from beaching my car on a mound of snow that my tires took me through :)

For insurance, if you say yes, and you are in any type of collision in winter months, I imagine your insurance will skyrocket, you won't be covered for your accident, and you would finally buy winter's after it :)

Spend the $500 on a set and save yourself headaches and hassle.

I thought the same as you when i bought my car..the toyo tires are the woarst tire i ever owned..half way throw winter i ended up buying goodyear nordic snow tires.

Out of all my years driving and cars/trucks i've owned this is the first time i bought snow tires...but the factory toyo tires that came on my car were the worst tire i ever owned.

And now that i got the snow tires i like it way better..more traction when taking off:)

I find the factory Toyo tires are pretty awesome when it comes to heavy rain in warm weather- they keep their traction very well- but snow and winter it's a whole different ball game. Looking forward to my snow tires from Allen :)

As mentioned in another thread i just renewed my insurance with Belair. The snow tire discount is 5% off. They said to use common sense when you put them, on. If no snow by Dec 1st, put them on anyways. Take off time is March-April unless early thaw or late snow. I asked specifially what would happen if you got in a snow accident with no snows on. They said your insurance would either be cancelled with no pay out, or you would pay back the discount amount for having them. It all depends on the investigation and what it determins. Just figure that a discount will pay for the winter tires after 2 years, then you actually get a discount and start to save.

+1 for the winter tires as well.

I ran all-seasons on my Accord up until the winter of 2006 when SFW convinced me to get winters. I have to say that they saved my life/car in an incident (See below) and they made a HUGE difference when driving in slush and ice.

Incident: I called 911 one winter's evening. I had seen a taxi-cab with it's 'call 911' light flashing. I figured I'd call 911 and tell them the licence plate and that would be the end of the story. Nope. The dispatcher asked me to follow the cab. ok... So I pulled a U turn on a slippery road and proceeded to follow this cab at speeds of up to 100kph on icy residential streets. The 911 dispatcher instructed me several times to keep up with the cab (as long as I felt safe) and to even run a red light in one instance.
At one point I lost track of the cab as he was going too fast for me. I also didn't realize how fast *I* was going. As I neared an intersection, I saw the cab being pulled over by a police cruiser, but I also realized at the same time that I was going over 90kph on an icy road with an intersection coming up. I jammed on the brakes and the car skidded around into an empty parking lot. I'm 100% sure that if I had all-seasons on the car that I would have ended up in an accident myself.
As for the cab, the cops pulled some guy out of the back and threw him in the cruiser :|

So yes, get winter tires :p

I just started a new insurance policy with RBC Insurance and they asked if I would have winter tires installed. I told them yes and my broker said if you don't have them installed and you get into a accident after 3 snow falls they have the right to cancel my policy.

But I would definitely recommend getting snow tires you're helping yourself as well as others on the road.

Yeah, sounds fair.

I was looking into Wintertires from the GB's already.

Yeah.. im a noob. My first car is my 2010 Mazda 3 GS.

It's my first winter :) and I loooook forward to driving back and forth from waterloo to toronto during it. Sadly.. my gf is stuck in loo for winter and I need (forced to) to drive there a lot.

So I guess i will get them. Is getting the steelies (package) really worth the money? Am trying to save money for my last tuition and trying to cut back on all costs if I can. (don't say why get a car when u are saving! I needed to drive to my work!) haha.

Get the steelies if you want to use your stocks during the summer. I use my stock rims with winters since I wanted to move up to 18's with a set of summer tires.

I also have the rim/tire protection option when I bought my car so if there is any damage, its covered for repair or replacement.

I normally put my snows on in the first week of November and take them off the first week on April. If there is a snow fall the last week of October (no snow tires) and I am in an accident would I be covered?
Maybe insurance companies have different time periods?
