Had to work last Sunday night, so I left my Acer laptop at my uncles place. Anyways, Wednesday rolls around and I go to pick it up, gone !! I guess a buddy of his, known to be a thief (in and out of prison and having ripped my uncle off numerous times) was partying with him on Tuesday. He found the bag and took the laptop and hid it outside while he was left alone. :flaming

My idiot uncle doesn't have home owners insurance, neither do I (only for car). Which means a 1200$ loss, without including all the personal documents and pictures and time invested in the system. Luckily I had documents stored in password protected drive.

Think I should worry about people hacking the system (vista) ? and possibly leading to more trouble ? How hard is that for someone to do ?

From the looks of it I don't think the guy is going to go out of his way to hack into your password protected drive.

Nah most likelyh this guy willl use it for himself... I think he will format it and reinstall it..

Anyway you can call acer and tell them theres a stolen laptop?

slim chance but who knows right?

Yahh definitely report it... especially if you have the serial number on the receipt somewhere... if he tries to sell it at least they might be able to track it... sorry to hear, that's super shietty :(

Thanks for the feedback guys, it's not a fun experience. I already went through some rage time, so now it's a matter of trying to get reimbursed somehow.

I will contact Acer soon and see what they suggest. I have the serial and mac ID in my records somewhere (I always keep paper records, for this kind of situation). Plus I never used automatic passwords or anything like that, and already changed all my email account passwords.

My word of advise to Laptop owners out there; Keep consistent backups, always hide your laptops out of plain view, don't trust leaving them in other peoples homes, don't leave important financial information in digital format, be mindful with valuable merchandise (library books too !)

If you bought the laptop on a credit card (gold card and above) with theft protection, you just report it stolen with the police and they should buy you a new one... Providing the machine isn't over a year old (I think...never had to do it)

Um, why is this even an question?

Call the cops, report the guy. If he's got a record, the police will crawl up his *ss. If he's on probation, he may go back to jail.

Or, tell your uncle to tell the guy that you're going to the police and he has 1 day to get the laptop back to you before then.

You need proof that the guy stole it... You can't just go around accusing people. Like, you had to have witnessed it or know someone who did. You COULD try to bluff your way into making the guy think you're going to get the cops on his ass...

Either way, report it to the police, but they won't do anything. They might question him, but that's about it.

+1 there isn't much the cops can do or will do

Maybe not, but I know there's nothing they will do if you don't even report it.

Report that damn theft already!
