View Full Version : Engine Mounts (Specifically Rear)

So I have a hard time getting smooth shifts between gears 1-2 and 2-3. From everything I read its the rear engine mount and the shifter bushings that are the culpurits of this.

The shifter bushings are a definate change, they are cheap and no brainers.

But the rear mount is where I have questions, what are you guys running? and what do you recommend? Right now the 2 that I see are the SU Rear Engine mount and the CPe Rear Mount. I saw a thread (I think from Fobio, correct me if I am wrong) where his mount failed (it was a SU mount). I personally dont want to buy a part where I am going to have a worry that it may fail (not saying that it is, but you get what i mean). The CPe mount is a tad bit more, but apparently its a very good mount with minimal vibrations.

I have heard of the TRZ dogbone, but that has CRAZY vibrations and I definatly dont want crazy vibrations.

Anyone have any recommendations? or what they use? any word on the failrate of the SU mounts (I also remember reading it could have been a bad batch)?

I gotta say that this is the most annoying part of this car. :flaming

I did this mod (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123692059) which helped a bit. Ive also ordered the CorkSport Urethane MM Inserts off protegegarge and its taking them a month to ship since its backordered. :loco

I have been running the SU mount like Fobio for about 4 months now. It has seen 3 track days and 1 drag strip night, and is still going strong. The only thing is the vibrations are a bit annoying, especially when the AC is on and the revs drop to 650rpm. I used my AP to bump them up to 800rpm minimum and the problem is not so bad.

Spend the money and get the CPE.

Ive had the SU mount for a year now. I bought it used off Unoriginalusername who had it probably a year aswell. Probably about 60,000kms on this mount now and it still feels 100% great. I took my stock rear mount out around 25,000kms probably, and there was a huge rip in it.

My rear was already starting to tear, I got it replaced under warranty. I'll watch it and see how long it takes to have this one start to tear now lol. Plan on getting an aftermarket mount just not sure which yet.

Last I saw there wasn't a mount that kept the stock levels of vibrations. All of them, including the CPe, increase the vibs significantly.

The stock one is a keeper for me.

spd frk
09-08-2009, 09:06 AM
All aftermarket mounts will increase vibration. It is a tradeoff to having the mount made with stiffer materials. The stock mount is made soft to quell vibrations, whereas CPE, SU, Medieval all use harder materials to limit engine movement, and thus increase vibration.

It is the same as with brakes. A higher temp brake, uses more metal, and makes more squealing, can't get around it.

Gizzmo_jr

Can't have everything, just gotta put up with the vibrations. My streetunit with 70duro is pretty manageable. Then you go into the higher race versions, you'll be chattering your teeth at the red lights.

I had the SU for over 30,000km...the bushing was slowly worked out of the mount. It didn't fail, but it was on its way out. I still got to get around to having it covered.

I'm running a CP-e mount now...it's actually a little more vibe than the SU...but nothing worth complaining about.

Either mount works, and works well...you just got to break it in proper...if you *****-foot it, it'll always be firm...launch it, rev it to redline, get it nice and hot...but that's just me... =)

For peace of mind, just buy a CP-e mount.

Ordered a CP-e Mount...

I get sooo agrivated trying to do a nice pull but cant because of the 1-2, 2-3 gear jerk/thud/insert word here... Its like I can never get a smooth shift between those gears unless I am totally granny driving.

I hope this with the shifter bushing mod or even a short shifter w/ the bushing mod would help.

So is this problem only on the DISI engines or do us non-MS3 owners need to worry about them too?

So mounts are the reason this car is so clunky when shifting?

That, and the crappy stock transmission oil. I did the rear mount and oil and shifts really smooth ever since.

Rear mount and Redline MT-90 oil. Can't go wrong!

Just got my cp-e mount last night, haven't thrown it on yet... Maybe this weekend. This is the mount that's easy to get at right? (The one under the battery box?)

Donutz
09-24-2009, 06:26 PM
If you bought the rear motor mount, it is not under the battery. It is under the car between the sub-frame and the ... engine! :) Look for how-to's as there are a few walk throughs. It is pretty easy to swap out, but I always go to Jimmy because I'm not comfortable crawling under my car, even on jack stands.

Slightly off topic but I just got the M3M engine torque dampener on my car and it made the shifts even smoother (I'd say more significantly than the rear mount did) and pretty much reduced wheel hop to zero

I'm thinking of getting a ETD for my MS3, but I was reading on the mazda3forums.com site and a couple people suggest you replace your stock rear mounts before if you plan on installing a ETD. Is that true or can you just go with the ETD and get the rear engine mounts done later?

They said it would put to much stress on the rear mounts.

Got my CP-E RMM installed by Jimmy this weekend.. man what a difference... love it so far.. the extra cabin vibration isn't that bad at all.. doesn't even bother me. Even letting the clutch out now it seems to grab quicker.. you could say.. not sure how to explain it but feels a lot different then before. And after seeing the POS stock mount.. what a joke that mount is compared to the CP-E RMM.

I'd have to say this is one of the best purchases so far for my car.. I've decided to go with the PTP Kicker plate next and pass on the ETD.

For anyone who hasn't bought a RMM I highly recommend it, it eliminates 80% + of the wheel hop. I was still able to notice some hop.. but very very minimal at that.

Sorry Kinn, missed your post :)

It says 60/75 on the site.. but when I got my CP-E RMM it says 65 on the actual rubber part of the mount.

Ya your gonna enjoy it.. I love it.. wheel hop is like 90% gone.. there isn't as much lunge with the engine when you shift at higher rpms

Honestly one of the best upgrades so far and Jimmy can install these in no time

Kinn
06-25-2010, 10:39 AM
More then anything, I grabbed it to tighten up the clutch and shifting since everyone says that it really changed that.. I don't drive it hard enough that I notice wheel hop much.

Going to wait until my STSP comes in then gonna have Jimmy do that the REMM and the mudflaps all at the same time. He'll do it in like 5% of the time it would take me. See if he'll do a once over too and make sure everything's fine.

Jimmy installed one of these last week. Even though my Mazda isn't a speed, I can immediately feel the difference in the way it shifts, definitely feels like more power is going to actually moving the car forward, instead of being eaten up by the engine rocking back and forth. I wouldn't hesitate to do this mod again... there is a nice difference in the way the car sounds, feels and transfers power to the wheels. Also, as mentioned above, I ordered the 60 durometer but it says 65a on the rubber portion. The whole CPE mount is very solid aluminum with solid rubber... the OEM mount is puny by comparison, and the rubber has cut-outs - no wonder it felt so soft.

Get it from CPE or Nextmod?

getting my street unit RMM installed tomorrow it is a 2 piece unit and rated at 62a. then I will install solid shifter bushings will let you know how it is. Here is write up on mount,"Street-Unit Motor Mounts are completely redesigned from the OEM mounts and engineered to provide the user with maximum benefit without excessively increasing vibration. They are CNC machined out of billet aluminum and the bushings are 62A durometer urethane. The two piece aluminum and steel design is reinforced by two grade 12.8 allen key bolts with a yield strength of 160,000 psi, topped off with locktite. The 2 piece aluminum/steel design will yield a longer life span than a 1 piece 6061 aluminum or welded steel mount.

Benefits of Street Unit Engine Mount Replacements:
•Reduce unwanted "wheel hop" that plagues the FWD MS3 and Mazda3
•Solid 62A durometer bushings
•Recover torque lost in the drivetrain
•Billet aluminum is aesthetically very pleasing in the engine bay
•Minimize drivetrain lash
•Must have for all MS3's
•Bolt-on installation and does not require the motor to be removed or supported"
$149 with shifter bushings awesome deal and there are in stock were back ordered for awhile!

RMM been on car for 10 days now and you feel the difference soon as you drive off!! I only got vibration between-1000rpm the day of install, next day was gone never had any vibes at idle or with a/c on. Have not had any wheel hop or loud bang when shifting hard. Everything seems to be firmed up from steering to gearbox with improved shifter feel with RMM and shifter bushings.

its really easy to do. did mine not long ago. only thing with mine is that the bolts were on there good. and i didnt have the luxury of a hoist so i couldnt get much leverage but nothing a longer wrench wont help with.

im happy with mine. only thing is since its stiffer now (AWR) it blew the last motor mount that i haven't changed yet. :( and it happens to be the hardest one to change.

A couple of quick questions,

Is it better to get the 1 piece or 2 piece?

60 or 70?

Best place to get it locally for a good price?

I dont want there to be too much vibration. Im looking to use it for every day driver as well as occasional track day. Thanks.

One piece cp-e mount in 60 duro from garage16 ... best bet. You could do the 75, but really I think the 60 was a better choice for me, less vibes and still a great improvement.

that'll happen because the other mounts (passenger and transmission) are now absorbing more engine movement. Given the age of your car, if you haven't changed the passenger side mount, it most likely needs changing.

I would honestly go with the full JBR mount set up.... I wish he made more mounts for the 6 :(

JBR for transmission mount? I read some reviews on mazdaspeedforums.org about the JBR and reviews on the PTP Kicker plate as well. I know you have a PTP Kicker plate and I read good things about them. Which is why I was thinking of going with that. Then I saw the CP-E Stage 2 RMM which appears to be a RMM and kicker plate in one is it not?

Well I'd consider getting the transmission mount, but I doubt I would change out my CP-E RMM at this point. I just checked the JBR RMM and I don't see much of a difference except that its black and hex cut, rather then round.

Update

Vincent - Just saw your GB post, I put myself down for a transmission mount 80a duro :)

Has anyone tried the Cobb RMM? The claim that there are hardly any vibrations at idle? Is this true? How does it compare to others of the same duro rating? Any input is appreciated...thanks

It's an RMM...it will vibrate some, how much will depend on your tolerance. Just buy it and try it out.

Tru that, however cobb was saying that because of its design they were able to reduce vibrations to a minimum as compared to other aftermarket Rmm's.
is there any one on here that has tried it? And if so how does it compare to others? Besides just buying something involves costs that cannot be recuperated even If it's sold after. That money can be put to other mods... My point of view that's all

Try on MSF...there's probably a few users there. I think most people on here have CP-e, Corksport or JBR mounts.

I have the Cobb mount in my car and love it. The mount isn't loud at all and honestly sounds OEM level still. The only time I notice it is when I'm idling and the AC is on, you get a slight vibration but nothing that's annoying. I personally prefer this mount over the rest, its nice and quiet but still eliminated wheel hop for me..
