View Full Version : RainX Deicer Windshield washer fluid opinions?
Hey guys
Rainx windshield washer fluid is onsale at CT today - 4 bottles for $10
is this stuff any good?
i've read various reviews praising it, and other reviews blaming it for fogging and streaking
i'd like to get it if it works because my stock driver side windshield wiper isnt sitting against the glass tight enough, and tends to leave a mist when its foggy/raining which makes it really bad for me to drive at night sometimes
i asked the dealer tech about it and he said all he could do is try and lube the spring to see if it helps
havent tried it since then yet
anyways, is this stuff any good?

Hi pyro, I just google it and I found a lot of negative reviews on the products. I think you should just stick with the cheap stuff and replace your wipers. My 2 cents.

Rainx Winter is great. when you are frosted in morning and use the blue stuff is keeps coming back as you drive till car warms up. Not with Rainx. All gone by time im out of the driveway. Treat your windows with rainx and the rainx washer fluid and you will be passing alot of people that can't see where they are going!
Also put on winter Blades!
I'll be getting two cases at that price to last me through the season.

I use it on top of regular rain-x treatments and keeps the beeding working. I can drive in heavy rain and it's like I don't need the wipers. Also, ice does not seem to stick as much on it.
CT always has this deal on for Boxing day and just after Labour day so far the past 2 years.

I need to buy that tomorrow.. if they still have it
Its great for winter time. If you have iced up windshield, just spray and it MELTS the ice so you dont have to scrap it. It works really well on those winter drives too.

I used this stuff all winter last year and never had any fogging issues or anything of the sort. I bought my two boxes today. Bring it on winter!

FWIW, I've tried both the summer and winter Rain-X washer fluid. I haven't been too happy with either. Yes, water sheets off and snow doesn't stick as hard to my windshield. BUT, it builds up a nasty film and there is an awful lot of glare driving into the sun and halo-ing at night. Also, that film messed up my rain sensor, wouldn't work properly until I cleaned the film build-up away. BTW, Invisible glass FTW. Now, I use the cheapest washer fluid I can find and PIAA wipers. Best combo, for me anyways. The Rain-X glass treatment works okay on the side and rear glass.

Although I am so on the rain X on the side and rear windows.

Winter RainX works great. But the summer RainX ain't so great. Summer are suppose to get rid of bug guts and tar, but...it doesn't.

I'd like to ask if you wax your car a lot? I used to have the very same situation you are speaking of until after I wax the hood, I hose it down and dry it off.
What I believe is happening here is that the residue from the wax is splashed off the hood and onto your windshiled causing build up. The only way is to clean the windshield, wipers and possibly re apply rain-x.
Since I wash the hood down after I polish, the situation seems to have deminished greatly.

Never thought of that. Although, I haven't been waxing the car all that often, maybe twice a year is all it gets. I clean the glass a lot more often, typically once a week and the film was still building-up. I haven't had that film since I stopped using Rain-X (shrugs) I dunno.

How do you determine that the film is building up? Is it based on the wiper chatter that happens when you use your wipers or is there something on your cloth when you clean it?
Rain-x is pretty hard to get off and if I remember, you're supposed to apply to a clean dry windshield. The only way to get it off is with abrasian as it seals the pores of the glass.
well i bought 2 cases lol, might try it out when winter comes
hoepfully theres no problem mixing it with what I currently have - im pretty sure rainx tells you not to mix because you will dilute their rainx formula

I based the film build-up on the amount of glare, halo-ing and the hicupping of the rain sensor, plus there is gook that comes off that I'm pretty sure isn't just dirt and road spray, i.e. road oil. I'm also talking about the Rain-X washer fluid, not the glass treatment. Although now that I think some more on the glass treatment, something in it does seem to attract dust and road spray. As I do use the glass treatment on my side and rear glass.

are there any other washer fluid types out there that people have had success with in the past for winter? I'm more concerned with the actual temperature ratings. There are times when I've bought no name "-45" fluid and it's freezing up on the windshield driving 40km/h on days just bellow freezing.

I found the exact same when I tried the Rain-x, and sorry Sonicboy but the wax theory is just rediculous :)
Went back to basic motomaster WW with no issues.

Why? Have you submitted it to Myth Busters? :chuckle
I dunno, I've proven it to myself so maybe time for you to do the same.

Been using rainx for years. Love it and would recommend it to anyone. The key to reducing the smudge/glare, in my opinion, is properly removing the haze after application. If you apply the product correctly, you shouldn't have any problems.
Oh... i just bought some of that washer fluid to use this winter. we'll see how it goes :)

I don't have to prove anything, been waxing my car every month for years never had any wax spray on the windshield!? How is it possible? And if wax were to blow off the car like that, your wax would be gone in days lol. :chuckle
One question though; When you apply your wax, don't you buff the residue off also?
Ex-Rolla we are talking about the Rain-x ww fluid here btw.

I'm not talking about the wax or application itself. I'm referring to the water that sprays off the hood afterwards when it rains. For me, it seems to have some residue that causes the chatter. Hey if you don't have the problem great for you. Maybe you use different wax.
edit..i i just noticed that you guys a re talking about waher fluid and not rain-x

What wax are you using? If you don't mind me asking.
