I have a problem with my XP and OSX home network.

I have three computers in my home network, two XP computers in two bedrooms and an OSX computer in the office. I also have a NAS drive which all three computers can see and access...to a point.

I use the OSX computer for photo editing and transferring the photo files from a memory card to the NAS drive. When I transfer the photos to the NAS drive, it transfers without a problem. However, when I try to access the folder containing the newly transferred files through the XP computers, the folder appears empty. It sounds like a access permission issue, but I don't know where to start in trying to fix this.

Can anyone help me out?

I haven't worked with an NAS drive but I can try to help you out.

1. What is the format of the NAS drive? FAT32?

What happens when you try to transfer a file from the PC to the NAS drive?

I assume you have tried refreshing your PC window/folder after the files have been transferred?

Only one solution, buy two more Macs to replace the PCs.

@cwp_sedan: NTFS. I know Macs aren't supposed to be able to write to an NTFS volume, but for some reason, mine does.

I was able to create a test Word document on one of the XP computers and saved it to the NAS drive. The OSX computer was able to see and open the file.

Refreshing the folder window didn't work.

What file format are you trying to view on the PCs?

hmmm

That's weird. Like I said I haven't used an NAS drive first hand so maybe something works slightly different than a typical external, though it really shouldn't. I think you have mentioned somewhere that you are running Snow, so maybe that might makes the difference for file transfers to NTFS. Though Leopard may be the same way.

I have had externals of multiple formats (Mac OS Extended, NTFS and FAT32) and the only way I have been able to copy files to the NTFS drive was if I used the Paragon NTFS plug-in. But that's a completely different issue and not related to your problem.

It has to be windows related since the. Since the MAC can see everything there has to be an issue with the PC. Whether it be sharing related or network related. I'm not too savvy when it comes to PCs so I'm not sure how much I will be able to help you on that end.

I think it's really odd that your PC can't see the files on the NAS since it's a totally on it's own. I really think it could be refresh issue, though if it's happening on both PCs I can't explain that. Just for shits and giggles have you tried rebooting one of the PCs after you have transferred the files?

I was able to fix it after browsing the tech support forums of the NAS drive manufacturer. I had to SSH into my drive and run a command. I've never used Terminal before this.

@cwp_sedan, I know I am not using Paragon so I am just going to chalk it up to luck or something that my Mac can read and write to an NTFS volume.

@PCLoadLetter, they were JPG files.

Glad you got it all figured out. What was actually causing it? I would like to know just incase it ever comes up again.

It's NTFS to the NAS device, but it takes care of doing all the reads and writes on behalf of the client, so the client doesn't really need to understand NTFS.

It's probably a permission thing on the NAS. Did you have to run 'chown' or 'chmod' on the files?

That makes sense!

@cwp_sedan, apparently it is problem and solution are specific to QNAP NAS drives. I'd rather not try to explain since I just copied and pasted the string in Terminal and it worked.

Ok I'll make sure to stay away from those lol. I just picked up a 1.5TB to add to my other 1.5 so I should be good for a while anyway. :)
