hello fellow Mazda 3 lovers. i don't know much about cars ie why i need your help. i bought my mazda3 last year and started buying castrol syntec synthetic oil and filter for my oil change instead of going to oil changing shops like Mr lube etc etc. my mechanic who changes my oil. i give him the whole 5 ltr bottle of oil so after the oil change whatever oil is left he gives it to me back . I've been doing this from past 4-5 oil changes and the left over oil from these oil changes is adding up so basically after 2 or more oil change I'll have about 1 oil change worth of oil. i was just talking to my mechanic that 2 or more oil then after that i don't have to buy oil for that oil change as i already have about 4-5 ltrs of oil saved up from previous oil changes but he said that once we open the bottle we use the oil and the leftover oil's molecules start breaking, that is why i can't use that oil as that oil will be accumulated after 6-7 oil changes almost year so the oil would be no good. is this right or not. thank you very much for all your opinions and suggestions.

as long as you keep it away from heat, cold and humidity, it should be fine for at least 3 years... synthetic doesn't break down!

i live in a basement and i store the oil in the closet opposite to the washroom where we normally put towels and other washroom stuff

From reading other threads 5w30 will not increase ur mileage compared to using 5w20, just a little decrease not significantly.

I've been running Castrol Syntec 5W-20 in the 2005 hatch for about 76K now. Doesn't burn a drop of oil and runs great, but like you, I never really liked the idea of running 5W-20. So, switched to 0W-30 German Castrol yesterday during the service at Jimmy's.

Canadian Tire carries it. $9.95 a litre I believe. I run the 0W-30 now in the 2005 hatch and 5W-30 Amsoil in my MS3.

0W-30 is actually a better oil in winter cold than 5W-30. Also, if you are using the Castrol, than the German 0W-30 is a full group IV synthetic. The regular 5W-30 and 5W-20 Castrol Syntec are not full synthetics, but hydro-craked synthetics, despite the fact they are called Synthetic.

This is kinda like when they tell you to do an oil change in 5000kms or 3 months, whichever comes first. If your car was sitting for 6 months, then wouldn't that be like exactly what you are saying, having the oil sit in your bottles for 6-12 months?

No it's completely different! Sitting in your oil pan it's already been collecting contaminants and moisture from engine operation and is still exposed to temp changes.Whereas sitting in a 'closed' container in a temperature controlled room, it will stay perfectly safe from deterioration of any form...aslong as the container stays closed.:)

usually, any forum when people stop replying, the thread is dead... discussion over, no action needed :)
closing it is only necessary to force an end to a discussion
