You could try http://www.dominionauto.com/
Hamilton, is a little far but you could e-mail just to see what they have. They have a pretty good selection of newer cars. They're pretty quick with e-mail replies.

Just a though... does anyone know when the VVT shift occurs on our engines.... 4000 rpm seems a bit high, but could it be related to the mechanism for that?
What are you doing with the old one?

I too, would like to know when vvt engages in our engines? I've got the new 2.5 though... Shouldn't be too far off though, right?

Why is your rpm hittin 4G in auto?
It really would be cheaper if you just got it fixed.
Even a used motor installed is around 3grand, at least

Why is your rpm hittin 4G in auto?
Its pretty easy to hit 4G in auto, especially in 1st or 2nd

after careful review i misjudge when its happening its starting just after 3000rpm and lasts till what looks like 4200 rpm and yes i see it mostly in 1st and 2nd

Uh, take it to the dealer and get it fixed? A knocking noise could be anything! I wouldn't bother doing a swap until I knew it was the only option.
That said, now's a hell of a chance to put in the 2.3ltr turbo :)

So you're willing to spend several grand replacing the engine and not even bother spending a couple hundred dollars to get mazda to tell you what is actually wrong with it?

hmmm, doesn't sound too promising. Did you have an independent mechanic look at it? Have you checked your oil for metal chunks?

I went to an Acura dealership yesterday to fix a small leak in my (1.6 EL's) tranny hose going to the rad, I thought, even though I could of fixed it myself for less than $20, I'd rather not get dirty and I gave it in, for what I thought would be $40 labour and maybe $20 for a new hose.
They told me that I had an aftermarket tranny (Who buys aftermarket trannies??), and they can't get the part numbers for my car, and, that the only way to replace the hose is to replace the tranny. They still charged me $55 to look at it.
I ended up fixing it my self for $20. I learnt my lesson on dealerships a long time ago, I was stupid to go back and give them another whirl.
I've had similar experiences in every dealership (mazda, mitsubishi, acura, ford). So stop telling people to "just take it to the dealer" as if it's a good idea. Having them take a look at it could cost $100's, and if he has any mods on it, they will blame that, and say take it off first blabalbbl blablabl lbalbla etc.

The point is the dealership can identify problems that other mechanics may not be able to. They are trained to fix these cars! Even if it cost him $100 for them to tell him, yup engine needs replacing...I'd say it's worth it, because on the other hand they could just say oh yeah, the coil pack on cylinder 3 is finished and you need a new one of those which runs a couple hundred bucks and his car is back in working order.
Mods or not, the dealership will fix the car, just things won't be covered under warentee (his is run out anyway, so no big deal)

They really can't do that much of a better job. They just follow the repair manual which YOU can download for free.
I took my mazda to airport mazda once to get my sun roof looked at, thinking they might know a quick fix for why it wasn't opening up... they didn't.. they wanted money to start opening up the entire headliner to see what was wrong...
I FIXED it myself, NOT opening the entire headliner, but just moving the part of the sunroof opening down and pulling the switch panel down. It took me 20mins to fix --
I still have a problem with a sluggish acceleration right NOW. I also have a rain sensor bad (code) and an airbag code. They want to fix the airbag code and rain sensor code before they even looked at why my car doesn't accelerate properly. They told me all the electrical connections are connected to each other. LIKE WTF -- what does airbags/rain sensors have to do with the sluggish performance!? This is what i'm talking about -- they go BY THE BOOK. If I had certain mods, they would tell me to go back to stock before they even TRY to diagnose the issue.

+1. I wouldn't bring my car to a mazda dealership unless I think that certain problem would be covered under warrenty. They charge way too much to diagnose the problem. I'd rather take it to Jimmy because although he is not specialized in Mazda cars, he's done enough of our cars from this forum to make himself just as good as one. Plus, he offers competitive pricing and I'd rather give my business to him than Airport mazda because giving them my loyal business obviously got me no where

A "diagnose" to check the code from your car when you get a CEL is 80$ !!!! just robbery if you ask me....

+1. However, I would actually put Jimmy's knowledge about our 3's and MS3's up against most Mazda tech's any day. Maybe not against a Mazda Master tech, but with the number of cars he has worked on and the number of modifications he has performed on those cars, I am more than comfortable with his knowledge base to both fix and diagnose any issues apart from say Mazda ECU and firmware updates. Not many Mazda tech's have worked on our cars to the full extent Jimmy has. That experience is invaluable.
