So I gotta ask. Is that little vent that steals air from the inter-cooler ducting to rout to the battery box really needed?
I was wondering about taking off the small duct and letting it breath that cool air onto the area of the SRI. No? The battery box would still be vented through the hole in the top, just not positively vented.

i've removed the duct on the sri side haven't noticed a difference yet...

Theres a purpose why the vent is there. The battery is closed up with a cover and needs ventilation or some sort. If you wanna remove this duct, make sure you take the battery cover off so it can breathe.

Odd that the 2010 Speed doesn't have a battery duct, nor does it have a hole on the battery cover for ventilation. It's just a solid cover.
Makes you wonder if the vent was even necessary
I'm not an expert, but I believe your battery only needs to be vented if it were in your trunk.. Since it's technically outside the car, it shouldn't matter... A hole is enough ventilation. I believe there are certain types of batteries that can be sealed and don't require any ventilation at all... Again, not an expert. I briefly looked into this many years ago.

It's funny you mentioned that. It's kind of why I brought it up. I was looking at a 2010 MS3 the other day and noticed that.

There was a guy last year on M3F that got an Optima Yellow Top and had a FMIC kit so he removed the whole ducting under the hood. His battery ended up overheating and catching on fire.

Interesting... I'm guessing yellow tops get extremely hot on their own? I'll be sure to stay away from them

Interesting - there are a few cars that have a battery warmer, and you can even purchase battery blankets at part stores.

Thats for extreme cold winter, like -20 or below, for when the battery finds it hard to get enough juice to crank the motor to start it cold.

It might act as a vent for the battery as well but i think it's mainly for the ecu. If you look inside the battery box behind the ecu you'll see that there is a hole exposing the back of the module.
