Not sure if this is in the right section, but it's somewhat topical because of what warranty work is being done.

Backstory:
I've got a 2006 Mazda3 Sport GT and I've put 83,000 kms on her since I bought it new. Last Thursday the engine started making noises and when I got home from work, I opened the hood to get a better listen of the noise as my initial thought was that it was a loose heat shield. I had my wife rev the engine and upon hearing that the noise was coming from the block I instantly knew what was wrong and booked a service appointment for Friday morning. An injector got clogged from what I can only assume was bad gas and was starving one of the cylinders. The cylinder overheated and casued enough damage that the engine is being replaced under warranty. The service woman said that they got approval to warranty the engine and have ordered a new one. She also mentioned that it could take a number of days to get the new engine, especially if it was on backorder (it apperantly is).

Question:
The service lady told me that Mazda's warranty policy will only pay for a loaner car if they have the car over 5 business days. I thought this was a bit odd, but didn't really fight it as she mentioned that they could possibly have the new engine delivered and installed by Tuesday (yesterday) and I knew the weekend wouldn't be a problem with only 1 car. Should I be arguing to get a loaner? Is this 5 day policy a load of garbage? What is the typical proceedure on getting a loaner? Should I just complain till I get a loaner?

The dealership is Oakville Mazda.

Id just wouldn't worry there giving you a engine around $5-7000 or more with labor & the rental is what 50-100 i would fuss over it.. Just my thought tho

A bit of an update:

After waiting a full week I couldn't take only having 1 car between my wife and I, so I ended up getting a free loaner car from a rental agency with Mazda footing the bill. This week will be my third full week with the rental. Wow. I didn't realize it would take a month+ to get a new engine installed. I'm still waiting on a call from Mazda letting me know that my car is ready to be picked up. grrrr. I just want my car back...

And to make matters worse, the first car the rental agency gave me smelt like cigarettes, so I had to exchange it after a couple days cause I couldn't take the smell. They upgraded me to a larger car for free, which was cool though. Then with the new rental, I got rear-ended because the guy behind me wasn't paying attention.

How is having a warranty "giving" you anything? Its part of the price of the car, its not a gift.

omg no luck for you. When I had my transmission changed out under warranty I was told the same thing. If you have the extended warranty they cover you for a rental car from day 1. That was the explanation that was given to me.

when they install a new engine, do they reset the odometer in that case? Yes right? .. Im bring my 3 into mazda on nov 3rd. HOPEFULLY I GET A NEW ENGINE TOO! (i doubt it though). im having problems with it making gurgling noises in morning, rough drive, stalling (and im driving ATX), oh and somehow i lost 1L of oil within 4900 km's so that will be checked out too.

darn straight!
Statistically speaking, I've already paid for any warranty work that needs to be done to my car.

Final Update:
It took a month, but I got my car back with a new engine. It's hard to tell though as I believe it was just a new block and most likely engine internals. I'm babying the car now until the new engine is broken in.

mido:
No, they do not reset the odometer. That would be illegal. Your car still has x amount of kms on it whether or not you got a new engine.

That is the 1 bad thing I dont like about Mazda! I had to drop my car off today for both engine mounts to be replaced under warranty and I had to rent a car for 2 days. $75 out of my pocket for a rental but seeing as this is the first problem I have had after 115k, I guess that isn't so bad!

Damn, would be great if they could reset the odometer. When i buy a car, i always look at KM'S being as that reflects the engine life.. Anywho, we'll see wat they determine on mine. Seems as though i have alot of problems. Its funny as i just had it in for oil chnage, and i asked them to check out the belts and they said there was nothing wrong at all. This time, they need the car 2 days, plsu they are getting the senior tech to check it out not the little kids playin around in the back.

Seriously, Detroit has a lot of other things besides cars that they can do, like, chicken wings. They have the best chicken wings. And beer. They could make beer. They could be, like, Chicken Wings and Beer City.
