Looks like both Bell and Telus are getting the iPhone as early as November! They built their new highspeed GSM network for the winter games to cash in on roaming fees.... Wonder how this will affect Rogers' price plans. TMK, Bell has unlimited data plans...

So deeply conflicted... I love the iPhone app selection (is jailbreaking going to work on this thing?), but like the stability of the BlackBerry... My Storm needs to go though.

Blackberry sucks.... too many issues. With an iPhone, and PING, their stock is dropping! :)

I just got off Telus for the iPhone.... too bad.

Blackberry rocks! Nothing can change my mind from one. Iphone needs to work on their battery life.

It's all subjective.
iPhone sucks, Blackberry sucks. It's whoever has what thinks theirs is better.

Perhaps if I glue my iPod touch to my blackberry I'll create an iBerry - AND THEN WHAT?!!?!?! ahahahah Can't touch this technology!!!

I paid to get out of my contract in June - Kinda wish Telus had told its customers that the iphone was coming....coulda saved myself some coin, and losing out on great customer service by switching to rogers! :flaming

i hate iPhones, mostly cuz everyone has it and they think nothing else can do what it can:blah

i can haz nokia n900

btw, its good that Bell and Telus have it now. This combined with pressure from Wind, DAVE, and Public mobile might cause the big three to drop data rates (fingers crossed)

Hating a phone because everybody has one is silly ;) I've used a lot of different phones...

I hate Windows Mobile because the battery life on them is a joke and the interfaces are really slow because there's always tons of crap running on them. Plus they have old school touch screens that don't work with your fingers. Who uses a stylus anymore?

The Nokia phones are meh, their OS should be replaced with Android :P

Android phones used to be butt ugly, but HTC has some new design concepts coming out which looks promising. Android isn't as well polished as the iPhone interface, but it has some nice features (Looks just aren't one of them :P)

I haven't used the Pre yet, but the interface looks HOT (Although the phone feels cheap in your hand).

I'll always love Blackberries. Their OS is great, but their phones get sluggish. They also route all traffic back to a central server, which makes them a little slow. You also don't get the true internet experience on them because everything is processed by RIM and sent to your device after compressing it. I still like the phone despite all this and from time to time I miss my old blackberry. Has the best email technology, although I don't like the email reader itself.

iPhone has one of the sweetest if not THE sweetest interfaces around. The speed of the new 3GS + new 3.X software makes the whole experience a lot more useable (Older iphone firmware had to be rebooted due to memory leaks about once every week or it would get really sluggish). However, my 3GS has crashed once since I've purchased it and I've never had to reboot it to get it to speed up again. Battery life is actually very good on these phones. On an HTC Windows Mobile device I had, my battery was dead by 3pm that day from simply trying to use the device (I didn't even play any multimedia stuff)...

Blah blah blah... Like someone else here said, it's all subjective.

SilentJay

For reference, most of the new generation BBs have double the available application memory now (256MB), so the sluggish-ness should definately get a boost from that. I think the Tour has 256MB and is otherwise almost identical to the storm1 HW - night and day user difference though.

Really, i'd only get an iPhone for the novelty... Much like the storm2, i'm not sure if i'd subject myself to a touchscreen-only phone again. Bold2 on the other hand... Apparently it packs even more application memory, and has a new processor under the hood that rivals the clockspeed of one of my old *nix boxes :)

Hating a phone because everybody has one is silly ;)

lol i know but i like being different ;)

Plus they have old school touch screens that don't work with your fingers. Who uses a stylus anymore?

Win Mo 6.5 is supposed to be optimized for fingers..although they're still putting a stylus in the phone, but that's for handwriting recognition.

I'm a fan of android but i agree with you. Until the Hero all Android phones were ugly. And the interface looks bland unless you've got Sense or MotoBlurr. And i love Nokias but symbian reminds of windows 3.1 sometimes...boring interfaces. That's why they're got Maemo Linux now :chuckle They've already got a huge development community.

As for Blackberries, i always liked them till i had a bold. It just kept crashing all the time despite all the firmware updates. Blackberry PINs are awesome and the email integration is awesome.

iPhone has one of the sweetest if not THE sweetest interfaces around. The speed of the new 3GS + new 3.X software makes the whole experience a lot more useable (Older iphone firmware had to be rebooted due to memory leaks about once every week or it would get really sluggish). Blah blah blah... Like someone else here said, it's all subjective.

I think iPhone DID have the best interface PRIOR to all these new phones coming out with Maemo, Sense UI, and MotoBlurr. Now it doesn't stack up..I'm not saying it sucks, just saying the new ones look better. But I bet with the new OS that comes out next year, Apple will redesign the interface and probably add multitasking

And battery life sucks with any phone. If I don't charge my phone every night, it will be dead after one phone call the next day. Phone's are advancing fast, yet battery technology has been the same for how long now..20, 30 years?

i'm with this person.

Is the iPhone a stable device? yes. Do I hate it? yes

Why? Because all the fanboys get so defensive and they think their device outlives anything and everything life has to offer.

We all have our personal tastes, but when it comes to cell phones, it's a war these days. Someones is always "better" than the others and someone has to prove it.

The Palm Pre is an amazing device. It offers a lot of features that others don't, just like others offer features that the Pre doesn't. There will never be a 'perfect device'. But, fanboys always say the most ridiculous stuff in the iPhones defense. The Pre is only a first generation device that's only been out for 4 months, yet people are out to get Palm simply for the fact that they are all brainwashed by Apple. Who cares that the app catalog has 75,000 apps in it.. did Apple have that when they first offered the device? No. Will the Pre catch up? Absolutely. Why would I want or care about apps that are a lighter and u flick it. It's pointless. Have apps that mean and actually do something. The Pre has only been available in 2 countries on 2 networks that are exclusive. Give it some time.

The pre isn't as cheap as people think. It has a really nice feel to it in the palm of your hand when using the device.

I will never support an Apple product in my life because of all the fanboys and I just feel it doesn't offer anything 'superior'. The Pre was released, and then Apple comes back and offers the 3GS which adds MMS (which should have been in there on their first release.. it's not 1995 anymore) and a 'faster' version, which is the exact same chipset as the Pre, and a few other minor variations to the device.

Point in case: People want Palm to fail for ridiculous reasons, and it's sad.

And a sidenote - I just want a simple answer because I'm tired of researching. I just want to know if I can buy a clean GSM capable phone and then have it activated on the Bell network once they're fully up and running.

Or is this only going to be supporting the iPhone, because that's all they're going to have?

Is this how it's working, or am I missing something here and it's not as simple as I'm thinking it to be. LOL BLOODY HELL I WANT A NEW PHONE!!!!! LOL

Everything I have read says, yes! Once they are up & running you can take GSM phone(provided it has NA frequency), get a sim card from Bell, and away you go.

Bell\Telus are NOT setting up a 2G GSM network; It's only HSPA/UMTS, which is 3G.

So this means your phone must have 850/1900 HSPA/UMTS capability. Standard GSM (or 2G phones) won't work. Reason behind this is why spend millions $$ on a technology that is becoming more and more obsolete.

Only thing worse than fanboys are anti-fanboys. lol

I think the Pre is a great device.. I've actually wanted to use one, just haven't had the opportunity yet. Lots of potential. I wish my phone had a physical keyboard...

I disagree about the not-feeling-cheap comment though. Some dude brought his Palm Pre up from the US the other day and when he was operating it, it looked really cheap. The display looked really nice though. The rest of it looks flimsy and slippery. :)

Unfortunately, and I really hope this isn't the case, but like a lot of almost-monopolies out there, the heads of the controlling parties often collude to set price-floors, despite what they may tell the governing body.

I mean, take a look at how ferociously Telus/Bell/Rogers are fighting wireless expansion. I'd surmise that it's only a matter of time before those expansion telecoms are either run out of the country, or are invited to the old-boys club. It's win-win for them, not so much for us.

I highly doubt with the new competition, Rogers would change their rates...

they are all in 'unofficial' collusion with each other with regards to pricing... a bird once told me! (a VP bird...)

the only way price would drop is if a foreign company comes in, opens shop and decides to not play by the big 3's rules...

Not quite. Because most of the Bellus population will still be on their existing 3G CDMA network, there will probably be HSPA-specific data plan packages.

For what it's worth, the articles and quotes that I have read indicate that they are going to put up a promotional rate on data plans for the launch of the iPhone and/or any other HSPA devices (hopefully Onyx 9700). Wishful thinking is screaming for a $15/unlim plan like they had for a while. Common sense points to a $25/unlim-facebook/twitter/flikr/myspace and on-device web browsing.

Telus will provide you with a 1-year exchange warranty. I went through 8 Curve 8330s through this exchange warranty, and will probably never do that again. You're essentially sitting on a dead phone for 1-2 (3 sometimes) weeks, until they get you a refurb unit replacement.

Now, 1-3 weeks x 8 curves = a lot of my time wasted, interruptions to my business. I flat out paid for an extended over-the-counter warranty at BestBuy when I got my phone. I walk in, tell them its busted, they give me a new one, no hassles. I've already had to switch my Storm 3 times before I found a winner.

BB mobile's plans were totally new though, since they're considered a separate store within a store. their terms are different than the terms of a laptop warranty for example.
