Question for the network gurus in here.
This morning, my router was fine, and then it just started to act up on me. I cannot connect to it at all, connection time out.
So, I have reset the router itself, and removed the WEP key and put another key. I still cannot connect to it.
I have desktop in windows XP and that's where the router is connected to. I start up the PC this morning and I can surf the internet through it. Now, I don't normally open that PC because I'm always on my laptop, I have a Mac. From this morning up until now, I still cannot connect, error is connection time out. I have a Linksys Wireless G if that helps.
What do you think is causing why it cannot be shared? I tried connecting through the wifi as well on my iPhone and it wouldn't let me. :(
Thanks.

Are you sure you are connecting to your own access point?

yes it is my own access point, as i have personalized the access point name and it's not linksys..
also, sometimes the access point magically appears and sometimes it doesn't when I try to search it. :( Do I need a new router?

try updating the firmware of your router.. make sure you get the correct FW for your router model and version

Not being able to connect wirelessly happens sometimes. Often it's because sometimes the router gets in a state where it fails to assign IP addresses. I'm not sure why though.
Anyways, try this:
Unplug the power cord to the modem (usually a round black connector coming from a power adapter.
Unplug the router power (also often a round black connector).
Plug the modem power cord and wait for the modem to initialize.
Plug the router power and wait for it to initialize (it should cycle through the lights before you see any network activity).
You may have done this when you said "reset" the router, but I power down both the modem and router to be sure.
I find it hard to believe that updating the firmware is the cause if the router worked well in the past unless this issue occurs regularly but it's worth a shot.

You should also try changing the channel you have the router set to use... 802.11b and 802.11g share frequencies with cordless phones, wireless keyboards etc. etc. Changing the channel to use a different frequency can some times help get around interference issues...

happened to me before.. did all the troubleshooting I can, never worked. I almost dumped my router. :chuckle
I decided to update the FW and it worked like magic :)
Did you add a new cordless phone or other wireless device that operates on the same frequency? (2.4ghz, unless you have your router set to run on 5.0ghz..) Maybe your neighbors got a new phone? ;)

This method works when that happens to me. Make sure you restart your computer after as well.

I did power down everything. I'm going to try and update the firmware and see if it works.
No new wireless phones. Maybe one of my neighbours? Lol.

Can we merge this thread?
I thought it was fixed.. apparently not yet. :(
My connection is fine here at my desktop but when i try to use my laptop, the pages slow, and i'm getting errors not connected to network, yada yada yada..
I know that it's not my laptop's airport that is acting up because, I tried connecting wifi through my iPhone and it's giving the same slowness. :(
Any more suggestions guys???

This happens to me about once a month. We have a couple of PC's, a few laptops, and my BB. When this happens we turn off all modems, turn off all PC's / laptops; then restart the modems. After they've been on for a minute we turn on the machines. This fixes the problem for me every time.

How are you "resetting" the router?
So, I have reset the router itself, and removed the WEP key and put another key. I still cannot connect to it.
Judging by what you've said, you are just unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Grab yourself a pen/pencil and hold the "reset" button on the back for around 10 seconds. This will revert to factory defaults and flush the router.
Sometimes certain routers will become overwhelmed over time and need a reset to get them back on track. It also happens when contantly downloading.
Good luck!

I did reset it by getting a pencil and holding the reset button at the back of the router. i did that twice as well today.

Try hitting it with a hammer.

could it be internet usage? but then again, it's fine with my desktop, so scratch that.
and no, i'm not using a hammer. LOL.

i changed the frequency of the router.. it used to be at 2.43 something.. and i changed it to 2.41.. i think one of my neighbours had a new phone cause i sure didn't have one.
