Can you still enter the US with a passport which has expired?

My dads passport expired a few months back..

I'm not sure if you just need a valid WHTI document to get in or if your passport has to me "valid" too

:blush

Thanks

an expired passport was good enough to get in prior to june 2008 phil,

read the CBSA website, it's a little confusing..

"Canadian citizens are required to present one of the following valid WHTI-compliant documents when entering the United States by land or water:

•a passport;
•a NEXUS card;
•a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card;
•an enhanced driver's licence (EDL) or an enhanced identification card (EIC) from a province where a U.S.-approved EDL/EIC program has been implemented; or
•a Secure Certificate of Indian Status (when this certificate is available and approved by the United States). In the interim, the current Certificate of Indian Status is an acceptable document to present when entering the United States by land or water."

an expired passport in this context would have qualified as a "valid WHTI document"

That is why i asked here, for people who travel to the states frequently

Not really... It says they require a "valid document". An expired passport is no longer valid.

Not really a stupid question though, Phil is sensitive tonight! ;) A friend of mine got through the border fine with just a birth certificate on Jan 2009... Maybe call ahead and explain your situation. Although you can usually rush a passport application for some $$$

I had an expired passport and they gave me a hard time, sent me into the customs officer and kept me there for 30 minutes after checking my backround in their system. Its recommended that you have a valid passport but you could always luck out on a lenient border officer but why take the chance.

You can get a passport renewal within 5-7 working days.

If it's super-mega-ultra urgent, they can have it done in 24 hours, for an additional $95 I believe. If you pay a super-mega urgency fee, it can be done between 3-5 days for $35. My buddy just picked one up, paid $35 but got it done the next day cuz there was apparently no backup in the system at all.

yeah, as long as you have a passport, renewing it is as easy as paying the money for it.

if you didn't have a passport and have to apply for one, it takes a little longer, you need a SIN Card and a Birth Cert and such.

Enhanced Drivers Licenses, from what i've read regarding the application, is quite lengthly, as you need to book an interview online, go into one of the scarce locations they have to do the interview (when they have time) and bring two pieces of ID, and answer a bunch of questions to prove you're a Canadian citizen...

not sure how long the processing the EDL's take though...

Alot of places won't issue you a visa if your passport will expire within 6 months. The US isn't so bad, but they have cracked down on the passport requirement. Mine expires this month, so I'd better get on the renewing boat too! I carry a work visa to work there! lol
Doh!

thanks guys..

i eneded up jut leavin my dad behind.. didnt want to take chances lol..

i know you can get a passport rushed, i'm not willing to pay rush fees lol..

It sucks that you have ti pay extra for the chip on the WHTI compliant license.. you would think they would just throw it in there.. but no eh

Its much harder nowadays, their procedure when you cross the border is to automatically swipe the passport, regardless of their "impression" of you. Airport or driving across, doesn't matter. If there is anything in the system, red flags come up, and off to secondary inspection you go! I've missed my flight before waiting for secondary inspection. I'd always eventually get through, but I had/have a red flag on mine... still trying to get that crap cleared up!!! My guess, expired passport will throw up a red flag too, its all automated now.
