I read a couple of threads on the US forum (mazda247.com) about this shift plate and a lot members are posting good reviews on this product. The purpose of the plate is to shorten the throw and to keep the stock shifters height. For more info about this, please read the threads below and his website.

The kit includes:
1 Plate
1 Weight
Stainless Mounting Hardware
Loctite
Grease
Installation Instructions
Now I'd like to gauge interest about this item and if we can get enough guys, we can probably save on shipping cost. I don't plan to order all the kits for everyone but to have individually order them and have it shipped into one address. The kits comes in 3 colors (black, red & blue) and the price is 80$ USD shipped in the US but price might be a tad more shipping to Canada.
I've PM'd him a minute ago and he replied to see if he can get us discounts.
I will update everyone as soon as I hear from him today.
UPDATE (GB Prices/Payment):
5 - $77.50 USD
10 - $75 USD
15 - 70$ USD
We can save 15$ USD!! each if we can get 15 guys on this.
I will collect all the money from this GB and direct to into one payment to the seller. I'd rather have you paypal me the funds sicne I'm using paypal to pay him. Don't send any payment as of now. We'll wait 3 days before GB expires and see if we can get more interest.
This GB will expire at Nov. 3, 2009
If your interested, please put your name/color on the list:

I'm about to pull the trigger as I've been in contact with him. If you can update price by today and it's enough of a difference I will join the GB. As of now, he's asking for $85USD shipped to my door. If it's not less than $75USD on the GB, I'll just order it straight from him.

i already have a short throw shifter
i assume there will be quite a nice difference with this plate added into the mix.

I have the Cobb STS, and the concensus is that having a STS and the plate is overkill. The reason I'm considering it is for fitment issues of the stock shifter weight/plate if I get a FMIC.

lol...you give me too much credit bro...but if anyone needs an excuse to spend $ or save $, they can read how they will into my posts...
this is an excellent product...all reviews I've read have been positive and is the reason why I've considered it and still considering it. however, since I'm budgetting for the long term, $85USD is really something I don't need to spend RIGHT NOW. so if the GB progresses, I may feel the incentive to jump in again.
personally, with a STS, I don't really feel the need for this to shorten my throws...I was simply concerned with the stock shifter weight hitting a FMIC pipe. this seems to be a good option for those that want to keep the stock shifter height (which I recommend instead of lowering it), while shortening their throws. the one guy who had this along with the Cobb STS had to adjust the Cobb STS to the 2nd lowest of the 5 settings to accomodate this...which means the acumulative effect of this plate AND the STS on the shortest throw isn't ideal...

I'm still interested in this, but I'll let a number of members here run this thing on their car first before I decide to get it. So, doesn't really help you with the GB, but the product is intriguing. Would love to have the shorter throw and keep the stock shift height.

Please do. I am very interested.
Understand that I have seen a lot of 'great' products hyped on here and MSF, only to see them tell a very different tale a few months after running them. I'm just naturally pessimistic, but in all seriousness, this sounds like an awesome little product.

Which is very understandable. I've been looking for a way to shorten the throws of the shifter and I have been wanting to get a STS but since the price has too much for my budget this seemed like a more viable option at this moment.
If this item isn't my cup of tea, its much easier to go back to stock :)

Can anyone answer whether this plate will firm up the shift feel at all or is it simply a way to shorten the throw? I would like to get rid of some of the shifting slop AND shorten the throw without changing the shifter height.
What about the idea of changing out the shifter bushings as I have read about in other threads and installing this plate?
Thanks

if you do this plate, without an STS, I'd definitely do the bushings...in fact, changing the bushings was my first mod to this car, and I never looked back.

Yes, and yes. The feel is much more defined, or crisp. Shorting the throw reduces that hunting for gears feel. Some have descibed it as notchy. It appears that notchy is good because I have not slept in a week.

Jamie,
Can you confirm if using this with an STS would be overkill?
I have a TWM STS right now with bushings and still feel there is room for improvement.
Here is the communication I received regarding the combination of the my STSP and the TWM STS.
"I received the shift plate today and just finished installing it. I must say that this is the best put together package I have ever seen. I have ordered a lot of parts from different companies and I have never seen such a complete package. Adding in the loctite and lube just blew me away. Amazing quality on everything. My first impressions without driving and just doing some dry shifting is that it is way to tight now. It seems almost impossible to tell when it is in gear and it is very tough to move around. I'm not saying that is my final verdict though. I will drive tonight and get the full feel."
"Well I drove it for almost an hour in a lot of stop and go areas. The shift throw is drastically shorter and the whole tranny feel is way more stiff. It is in fact so stiff that I seem to be fighting it the whole time to keep shifting. Another side affect is that since the movement has been reduced so much there really isn't any room for error. It seems to be really easy to get locked out of a gear, especially under moderate to heavy acceleration. In my opinion the plate would definitely replace the need for a short throw shifter but in combination with one I think it makes it more difficult to shift due to the extra effort and concentration needed.
I really do think the quality of your product is great. It is nice to include the little things like loctite and lube. I spent over $250 on my TWM shifter and they didn't give me anything with it. It required some silicon based lube which I had to go out and get."
I think this answers your question?
Thanks,
Jamie

Sorry for waffling on this guys but I am removing my name from the list. It doesn't make sense for me to try to save a few bucks through the GB on shipping to Toronto when I would have to drive down from Collingwood to pick it up anyway. Im installing some bushings to see how the shifting feels and will order from Jamie directly after that mod is complete.

The adjustment is only required if you feel that shifting from 1st to 2nd could use some improvement. I have done it, others have done and it does make shifting smoother. I only like to recommend it to people if they really need it, and have more advanced skills to do it. You can make things worse. If you do it, take your time and don't rush. Sometimes us men rush and make a mess that takes longer to clean up.:bang
FYI folks...I don't include a CD with the Video and instructions anymore, just hardcopy of the instructions. Cost and time have become a factor. That's great. I included the video but chose not to "advertise" for the lack of a better word. I was concerned that everyone would attempt it and it's not something I felt was within the capabilities of everyone. I was worried I would create a support nightmare for myself. Most don't need it.

That's great. I included the video but chose not to "advertise" for the lack of a better word. I was concerned that everyone would attempt it and it's not something I felt was within the capabilities of everyone. I was worried I would create a support nightmare for myself. Most don't need it.
It is nice though isn't it?
Thanks,
Jamie
It is for sure. I read about the fine tuning on Mazdas247 a while back, but with the stock shifter never felt the need to do it. But yah once the STSP was installed a lil tweaking to bring it back to my liking was required. Glad that it was there so I didn't have to search for it. Honestly though the fine tuning was so straight forward though I think anyone can do it and not affect anything since it really goes back to normal on its own.

I think I'll run through it again on my car and maybe I'll add it to the install directions as an option.

I got mine after a couple weeks and installed it right away. As noted before, very thorough instructions, a complete kit with everything you need, and the whole thing fit perfectly and seems very well made.
Once installed I love the new shift throws...dramatically shortened...I can flick from gear to gear with very little effort. It takes a little while to get used to the new feel but it is certainly worth it.
My only question is whether there is any concern that the boot surrounding the linkage cable, which now comes into contact with the connector when shifting from 1st to 2nd, will eventually break at the contact point? If so, what is the potential effect? Comments?

well here's my review!
pros:
very short throws compare to stock(i mean short!!!!)
lessen the notchiness a bit
heel and toe is effort less
easy to instal (15 mins tops)
can't go wrong with the price!!!(worth every penny)
cons:
the grommet on the shifter cable is hitting the plate next to it (manual say's put greese on it but i think the grommet needs to be change to a skinnier one)
needs to learn how to release the clutch earlier now
sometimes it feels like the shift are not in coz it's so short(but i drove the car hard in turns and it stays in gear)
overall i'm very happy! just need to find a way to fix the grommet...thanx james b....!

I'm glad you like it. I understand and respect your concern about the boot. That silicone boot is so strong that I believe it will never wear out. I have 6408 miles on mine and there is NO sign of wear on it. I suggest a little lube or bearing grease be applied to it at each oil change. I suggest this not because I think it needs it but for added piece of mind for the consumer.
On a side note....
I'm gonna post something on my site in the next couple of days that I think will look sooo hot on your car and every other MS3 for that matter. It does on mine. I'll give you a hint....Engine compartment bling. Stay tuned.
OH! you know those reflectors on the rear bumper? I have some black out covers coming that are :headbang. These are sweet. The go over the existing ones. No need to remove the bumper or anything crazy like that to install. And the appear almost flush with the bumper cover after their installed. The rear 2 will be in a flat matte finish to blend with the lower bumper panel. The sides will be smoked or unfinished with the option to color match. These are $70 for the sides and another $70 for the rear at other popular MS3 aftermarket sites. I could in no way justify that price and sleep at night. I hope to have them this time next week.
Thanks,
Jamie

Sorry I didn't respond to Jamies request for clarification but I was out of the country for a bit.
BIK98c has already explained more clearly what my concern is and I see your response. I am glad to hear that your boot has shown no evidence of wear but I think it would be prudent for those of us with the shift plate to keep an eye on that contact point...duh, obviously!
In any case, I have been through the SE USA, driving many km on the MS3 since the plate was installed and can say that I am thoroughly satisfied with what it has done for the shift feel. Thanks again.

Hey guys any of you have any experience with the STSP in very cold weather?
I live in SASK so the -40 weather definitely made driving an experience. Much like how the shifter is stiff and sluggish in cold weather the shifting with the STSP was a bit more difficult it required more precision when shifting but its not impossible.
Jbarone
12-18-2009, 02:56 PM
Hey guys!!
WOW that sounds cold. Letting the car warm up will greatly reduce the stiffness with the STSP but I'm sure you already know that. Here it's about 20* and I let the car run for about 15 minutes before I take off when ever I can.
I've been so swamped with completing the STSP for the MS6 that I've not had a chance to put the dress up kits and the black out reflector covers online yet. I hope to do it this weekend. Look for a news letter in you e-mail soon too.
I've got 120 shifter base bushings coming off the mill next week. $22.50 shipped domestic. I'll see what it costs to ship up to you guys. I plan on putting them in an envelope so it should be pretty cheap.
I hope you guys have a great holiday season.

No Lube? Crap....sorry about that. If you can find just a little grease, any kind will do then use it. Really the kits don't require it anymore I just supply it for peace of mind and I have about a thousand of them.

Stupid question here:
If you installed a JBR STSP and a STS would the throws be even shorter?
Is anyone running both a stsp and a sts?
I'm getting a TWM STS with upgraded bushings soon and would there be a need for me to get a STSP as well?

Not a stupid question. You should ask yourself do you want it? It is being done with the TWM and I have tested this combination myself and like it. You must be prepare for very short shifts and to make some adjustments to the shifter as well.

Ahh ok that's the adjustment your talking about. I adjusted mine a couple weeks ago to make the shifting somewhat smoother, specially between 1-2 gears. I'll probably have to make some adjustments once I get the STS installed. Well if the throws aren't short enough, then looks like I'll be getting a STSP down the road. Maybe there will be another group buy soon :D

Sponsors are a key component in keeping TM3 forums alive and without them there wouldn't be a TM3 forum. We want JBarone to become a sponsor before he can officially run a GB or sell any products through the club. So far he has neglected to do so, and we (or at least I) would prefer that members wait to buy from him until he does so. Hopefully everyone realizes what impact this makes on the entire club.

Shouldn't people be allowed to buy from who they want? If it's on his site and they order from there, it shouldn't matter if he is a sponsor or not.

Think the problem is with him advertising on the site without being a sponsor.
But really guys, even without a group buy, this is still a great product for a good price. Just go order one now!

I would if I wasn't starting school on the 21st! I'll barely make my payments for the next 2 months even with the $2-3k I'm borrowing from a friend.

I wanna get one.. but I'd like to know someone who has a TWM STS and a SSP, get some feedback on how it drives and feels.

Do a quick google on it.... You'll find a few reviews on another forum (starts with an "m") lol
The reviews aren't good (for the speed) but I'll let you find out for yourself.

Anyone notice increased clunking from their transmission when they installed te JBarone? I installed mine, felt great, but 1st to 2nd sounded aweful so I took it off 30KM later. I've read that if your transmission already clunks, it makes the clunking even worse. :(

Really??? Never heard that.
Did you inquire to mr.barone?
What did you have it installed on?

There were a couple of reviews that mentioned this. I didn't bother asking JBarone about it since I saw it already mentioned. I probably could have tried to fix it by adjusting the shifter but I wasn't sure if that would fix it.
It was on a gen 1 Speed3.

No problems with mine (2010 Sport GS). Shifter is stiffer than before, but that's expected. I love how short the shifts are now. With the shifter base bushings each shift is super solid.
Well I've had mine on for about 2 weeks now and after some initial installation issues (which were my own fault. But honestly, put the grommets in the kit!) It seems to be working fine. I'm just not sure I like it. The throws were really short which is great but it does feel VERY clunky. It's not really a nice mechanical clunk either...it's quite abrupt. Jimmy seemed to think this was normal given how the plate works.
The plate is changing the ratio of movement between the shifter and plate. Shorter throws mean that the plate is moving faster. I'm not sure how, if at all, this might affect the transmission...but I would use the term "falling" into gear, "slammed" might be more appropriate.
I haven't done any fine tuning and I’m not sure if it would help this. I also haven't installed the shifter bushing yet and this was installed at the same time as the CP-E REMM. So I'm sure the feel of the clutch/tranny was affected by that as well.
Here are a few other things I've noticed.
- Shifter is quite stiff now, finding gears is easier but does require more effort.
- Doesn't like to be moved quickly, seems like it wants a pause at neutral, especially between 1st to 2nd, and 3rd to 4th. Direct shifts without the pause feel awkward and forced.
- Clunky and loud, shifting is much more audible now especially 1st to 2nd.
I’m wondering if changing the shift knob to a heavier knob might help, or will that just make it worse? Opinions?

Adjust the shifter and things will smooth out. Yes it does take more effort but soon you won't know the difference. Shifting is more audible now because of the RMM. When you add the bushings it'll be even more. In effect you have removed all of the vibration dampening and now you hear these sounds you'd otherwise never really hear. A heavier knob will make it easier to shift.
Thanks,
Jamie

You need to adjust/fine-tune the shifter to get rid of the stiffness.
Also, look into the PTP Kicker Mount as this engine likes to move a lot and you still have the "soft" passenger side mount and tranny mount to contend with.

Have you changed your tranny fluid? I put Redline MT-90 in mine and it has made a difference. Much smoother shifts, less effort required, and it doesn't "stick" in gear anymore when trying to move to the next gear.

I'm finally getting a RMM, should hopefully help with the tough shifting from 2nd to 3rd when pulling hard.
