Hey guys,
I've been told by a bunch of friends now that my exhaust is blowing out some smoke when I start moving off idle or a stop light or stop sign etc...
It's not huge, but seems to be enough that a few ppl have noticed.
Once it was pretty bad when I had the car on the driveway for a few minutes to get some stuff out of the car before moving it back into the garage.
I don't know if this is a "turbo" issue.
As I know most guys have a smoking turbo while the car is in pure idle right?
Additionally I have been getting a CEL recently. I cleared it and then it came back again. I didn't have one at all in my 2 years owning the car.
Mods - CPE Downpipe + CPE Catback + Cobb SRI + Forge BPV
Only recent changes to the car were
- BOV to BPV in August
- Stock Exhaust to CPE DP + Catback back in May'ish
I only started getting the CEL's about 3 weeks ago.
Any ideas?
The car doesn't feel like it has any issues when I'm driving it.
Feels perfect and on days like today feels great actually.

have you taken it to the dealer yet? regardless, you should have a look at the smoking turbo TSB, and follow its regiment and perhaps do the test yourself on the driveway.
also, have your friends told you if they saw black or blue/white smoke?

+1 and sorry to hear Phil. There have been a few people with increased smoking after switching out the stock DP and CBE.
If you have a lot of black smoke, check your oil to make sure you aren't burning it... A certain member on here was burning a lot of oil in his heavily modded MS3 before it went back off-lease.
I believe blue/white smoke is more indicative of the smoking turbo issues or a seal leak somewhere.

does a CEL usually get thrown as a result of the "smoking turbo" issue?
Fobio, did you do the test? aka did you change to 5w40 and etc?
Thanks for the input so far ZZB + Fobio.

yes...I did the test. once you can demonstrate that, it makes it easier/quicker for the dealer to diagnose the issue.

okay so i guess i shouldn't "ask" the dealer to help me do the test right?
i just don't know how convenient it'd be for me to go buy 5w40 and change the oil and etc....
anyways i'll let it idle for 10 minutes tonight to see what happens first
although my probably seems to only happen when i'm just coming OFF idle.

for the dealer to do the test for you, you basically have to get THEM do the 5w40 FIRST. then monitor it to see if the issue comes up, THEN they go thru the process of diagnostic/troubleshooting and getting Mazda NA involved. since you suspect the problem to be the turbo as I did, the earlier you go 5w40 the faster it'd be for them to pinpoint the issue.
good luck!

looks like at idle the smoke starts to accumulate.
after 6 minutes i was getting small degrees of smoke coming out of the exhaust
although it looked more whitish/gray ??
can' tbe sure if it was blue...
but it definitely stank
not ur typical exhaust smell....

Is the downpipe catless? For example with my car I have a test pipe and it stanks! Also could the increase of visible smoke be due to the temperatures?

I believe it's catted. I took Garu's old downpipe + catback

Phil i can do a scan for you to read the cel....CEL is probably from the DP...i get cel every once in a while and i just clear it.
Do you have the Smoking turbo fix (that Vlad was selling) its worked for me so far.

I do have it, but i'm curious if it's better to see if i can just get it replaced (if the dealer is willing to work with me)
Thanks for the offer kyle. If i can't find a resolution by the time we meet up in November, that'd be perfect if you can help me read + clear the code.
It's just weird that the CEL only got thrown recently at the same time the smoke started coming from the exhaust.
I've had the downpipe + catback for about 6 months now and only recently..... sigh..

nope
no AP
no tuning whatsoever
just a few mods and that's it
I've noticed black smoke on WOT on highway. Its actually been like this for a long time. I'll be doing WOT, then suddenly I feel like the boost is lost @ around 5k rpm and see a cloud of black smoke.
Not sure if it's related to your issue?
Karen @Agincourt Mazda told me it could be turbo, as it's similar symptoms as Fobio's.

Losing power around the 5k mark is common with the MS3.
I also get some blackish smoke at WOT but I think it's just a rich condition that is "built in" for safety. Better rich than lean.

When I mean losing power, I don't mean the 5500rpm power lost. I meant that I feel like the turbo choked and suddenly lost the boost before that. Now, with that said, I can't be 100% sure if it was at the 5500rpm that it happened, i'll try it out again sometime

It's one of those days...when I read that, I got a deja vu about what I'm about to say in reply.
Karen and Agincourt, would've only observed white/blue smoke @ idle. Personally speaking, I've never had issues with the car @ WOT. Never had black smoke billows...however, all turbo cars shoot out a bit of soot/black smoke when you go WOT when cruising, it's supposed to do that.
My issue and only issue with smoke has always been white/blue smoke @ idle. If my issue was anything else other than blue/white smoke @ idle, then I'd been worried and would've had it taken cared of at first sign of it.
If somehow, Karen/Agincourt caused black smoke during their inspection (as they've stated once but can not substantiate) then it'd have been testing done BEYOND what was called for on the TSB. At that time, I told her I never had issues with black smoke WHATSOEVER...then I politely asked them to focus on the smoking @ idle.
chris...if you want to talk in more details about my turbo issue, PM me. =)
