Thinking of getting an aftermarket exhaust in the semi-near future, and was wondering what a reasonable price to pay for a good one would be?
I was considering the Mazdaspeed one as I don't want one overly loud (i drive auto).
Thanks!

Mazdaspeed accessory exhaust or an OEM Mazdaspeed3 exhaust removed from an MS3?

Zoom Zoom Boy, I'm not entirely sure on what the difference is between the Mazdaspeed 3 exhaust (removed from a Speed3), and the aftermarket Mazdaspeed exhaust.
Are there any stregnths and/or weaknesses to either?

Sorry, I forgot all about this thread and then missed it until I saw the post above.
The Mazdaspeed accessory exhaust is not the same quality in material and weld structure as the OEM MS3 exhaust. The accessory exhaust rusts out quicker and also has issues with cracking at the weld points. The shape of the exhaust tip is also more oval and in my opinion at least, is louder and doesn't have the same quality tone as the OEM MS3 exhaust.
I think there are some fitment issues too with the accessory exhaust, but not 100% sure. It may depend on whether you have a sedan or hatch.
The OEM exhaust removed from an MS3 is a very good quality CBE and fits perfectly onto another hatch. It needs extending, approx. 6" I believe, to be placed on a sedan. The OEM exhaust tip also fills out the exhaust bumper hole perfectly, without looking garish or even out of place. It just looks OEM, as opposed to fart can aftermarket set-up. The sound however, is the best part. Just a beautiful deep throaty growl. It is loud, but not overbearingly loud like some other aftermarket catbacks. Again, this is subjective, but the MS3 exhaust is the best sounding CBE to my ears for the MZ3. If you do manage to find an OEM MS3 exhaust (they don't come up for sale very often), then I highly recommend switching out the rear valance on your back bumper with the MS3 valance. The valance costs like $60.00 (approx.) and it adds a perfect look and some slight sound deadening/dispersion with the twin diffusers on the back also.
f12e5h who posted above, is actually running an OEM MS3 exhaust, so he can tell you firsthand about his experiences with it too. :)
As for price, the Mazdaspeed acessory cost is dealer pricing, minus applicable TM3 member discount. I suggest you contact Oakville Mazdsa and MOT for pricing. FLIPDADY on here is the parts manager at MOT. Send him a PM.
Pricing for a CBE removed from an MS3 depends on age and condition of the exhaust and what the seller decides he wants to sell it at. Fast sell or maximum return. Prices are typically between $250.00 to $500.00 for such an exhaust.
Good luck.

Go Vibrant!! best bang for the buck, will outlast most all other systems and quiets down nicely once broken in. :) ....trust me.
Less then $600 too, which is tops you should pay for a system IMO and it comes with a High Flow Cat.

Man they dropped in price!! When I was looking they were almost $1000.Borla was my first choice but the Vibrant won over cause of price and the HFC.

I heard power loss on MS3 OEM CBEs,when they are running on regular 3s, due to lack of back pressure
as regular MZ3 has 2" stock piping diameter, while MS3 is 3".
Id say if its the durability&quality you care about, go with after market one, like magnaflow or vibrant.
If its peace of mind for warranty stuff, go with mazdaspeed accessory one.

mazdaspeed will be overly expensive just because its a mazda part. get a borla sounds amazing, doesn't sound like a tin can like most of the other ones. i don't know about an auto tho, might drone alot.

Thanks for all the info! I have a sedan so i'm not soo sure how "easy" it would be to extend the pipe of the mazdaspeed one for my car... Are there some places in the GTA that would do this?
As for borla, is it true that they have discontinued the exhaust for the 3? Mine is a 2007 and from the looks of their site they stopped making them in 2006.

It's easy. Any garage with a welder can do it. Jimmy at Street Performance does it all the time.

No such thing as a "reasonable price" because as long as your happy with what you spent doesnt matter what everyone else thinks :chuckle
As for the exhaust I spent a little more money and bought the Mazdaspeed exhaust kit, for two reasons
a) dealer installed
b) dealer warranty
I love the way it sounds... try and get to listen to them all that are available will make a huge difference in your decision.... !!
But the mazdaspeed makes good noise not too loud but loud enough to announce your arrival.... and its not high pitched nice deep tone... and idles and pops like a suby...
