Thumbs up to Hyundai ! I wonder how many (prb zero) other companies would step up to the plate and do the same thing.

Does the owner still get some funds from the insurance company?

He should, if the car was totaled the insurance company should give him the cash no matter what.
Anyway, it's great PR for Hyundai, and will likely end up making them far more money than they lost by giving away the car.

Well done Hyundai!
Cynicism aside, ( come-on, replacing his trashed 2004 Elantra with a 2010 Elantra even @~24K for the Limited ) why not give him a Genesis sedan or coupe instead?

Well if this happened to me I would be happy getting a brand new car regardless of what style it is.
Maybe he prefers the Elantra to the Genesis anyway. Maybe he's got a family and finds the Elantra more practical...
Anyways, good on Hyundai Canada for doing that. Makes to show there are still some good people (and smart businessmen) in the world!

They didn't owe him a thing. He should be happy that he got a new car out of it.

I agree. It would have been more worthy if they gave him the vehicle of his choice as a replacement. Unlike the most of their competition, Hyundai did quite well this past year....

Just heard on CTV that the guy is getting a 2010 Elantra loaner until his actual car arrives. He was able to select the color he wanted (black).

The only reason they gave him the new car was because he had just finished paying his off.. otherwise, they wouldn't have done anything..

No, the reason they gave away the car was for the publicity. This story has been everywhere.

Main reason.. but Hyundai has been known for being generous.. hence why they have such a good name..
Don't forget, if it wasn't for people buying their product, they wouldn't be where they are now..

Every car maker at one time or another has given cars away when its for a good cause and can give them free advertising.
Hyundai is getting better but they do have their problems and customers with warranty issues. Not everyone is completely satisfied.
Remember, all the promotions they had this year was to win over new customers that never would have considered their products. What they did this week is another step in shrewd marketing. Kudos to them and something other manufacturers should look at. All this talk of good will is worth more than one Elantra.

Kudos to Hyundai. This will certainly score them many PR points. Even though they owed this driver nothing, they gave him a brand new replacement car anyways.
I must say that's extremely generous. I just wish there were more generous/helpful people and companies around.
Unlike, *ahem*, this...

Yeah, I know. From A BANK.
And the fact that it's for Boston Pizza, really makes you wonder-- what does BP have to do with ANYTHING?
I think the manager just rifled through his desk, and that was the first thing he found that had any value.

More than a million-and-a-half people have watched an BMW X5 driver from Ontario, Canada make the tiniest of parking errors: hitting the gas instead of the brake and driving on top of two other cars. Turns out Hyundai Auto Canada was one of those 'people.'
One of the cars crushed by the X5 was a 2004 Hyundai Elantra belonging to Todd Jamison – a car that he had finally finished paying off the month before the incident. To make him feel better after that little misfortune, Hyundai gave Mr. Jamison a brand new Hyundai Elantra Touring. Follow the jump to see Jamison getting his reward, and the botched parking job that led to it. Now we're just waiting on the maker of the blue car to step forward... Thanks to everyone for the tips!
UPDATE: The woman responsible for playing monster truck derby with her X5 was identified the day after the incident when she returned to the scene and was recognized by an Extreme Fitness employee whose car was the other one crushed. She has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
