I'm looking into doing a possible electrical mod on my car, and I'm going to have to disconnect the battery. But I read that disconnecting the battery for several minutes will reset the computer (the ECU I think?) What does this mean? And what else will be affected by disconnecting the battery?

When you reset your ECU you will lose radio settings, clock, dash lights need to be reset, and you may notice funny things with your power, idle, and fuel consumption. The idle characterstics will stabilize over a short period of time, power will return, and fuel consumption should normalize. Oh, and your car might stall the first time you let it idle.

:whoa
Really? The engine will perform differently with an ECU reset and needs time to normalize? How come?

the computer has to relearn your driving habits, climate conditions, emission control system health, etc

Do you then have to granny drive it for a while for the computer to re-learn economical fuel mixture settings?

ive never had a problem with my car. and i've done stereo work tons of times, so my battery is always getting disconnected.

I don't know about economical settings. I always want it to relearn the peppyness, so I let it run 5 mins, shut off/restart, go get on/off/on/off/on/off the highway. I do some quick runs to the end of third gear on the on-ramps, then cruise home.

My fuel consumption is around 450+ km/tank driving mostly in rush hour traffic.

Don't take the battery out for more than 10 seconds. Something to do with the battery powering up the engine immbomboilzer .. which keeps your car from blowing up.

Sorry, I'm slow on the uptake. Why do you think that your car will blow up? How long do you think it takes to swap out a battery? I've had my battery disconnected for hours and never had any issues!

hahahahahahaha, sorry that was great. Have you been smoking any pot? I suppose it could be the reason for your paranoia. This is 100% false!
