Anyone else notice trouble getting into frist gear after a stoplight, or even when downshifting at a low speed in an intersection?
Seems almost like my first gear syncro has been messed up from day 1. I at first thought it would loosen up a bit but it is the same at 3,600kms.
The only easy way to get it into first sometimes after a red light is to pop it into second and then back into first while holding clutch pedal down.
Maybe it is normal for this car, I just want to see what others are experiencing. It is just a little annoying a red light to look like a rookie driving stick when you have to pause to put it into second then back into first after realising that first isn't giving you any love this time LOL.

I sometimes have this on my 2005. No issue for me. Actually I used to have this on my Protege 5 as well. Just do as you do, 2nd to 1st while holding the clutch down. I 'think' you can also clutch in,out,in and the sychros should line up. People do this when reverse doesn't line up.

Well that makes me feel a LOT better. Thanks!
Anyone else?

I can count on my hands the number of times it happened to me over the last 21000 km, so it's not a big deal for me. When it happens, it's always when I'm at an intersection, never when I'm driving like you though.

The reason you have trouble getting it into low gear is that you clutched in at a high speed, so your transmission is still spinning at that speed. The speed difference is bigger than your synchros can take. If you clutch out and back in again (in neutral), it'll slide right in. The reason it works to put it in 2nd and then 1st again is that the synchro in 2nd brings the speeds down enough for the 1st gear synchro to match it again.
At least that's my understanding.
Best practices would be to row the box down with rev matching when slowing down, not just clutching in and letting the car coast down. That and rest the car in neutral without the clutch when stopped. You shouldn't have any more of these issues then.

Slam525i, I do all of these things, I revmatch seamlessly, and always stick car in neutral, and release clutch pedal any possible chance I can. I will coast into an intersection in 2nd, right down to 1500rpms or so, then clutch in and it still has trouble finding first sometimes. Even when stopped at a light, foot off clutch, sitting there for a minute or two, clutch in, no dice with first. It's bizarre. Doesn't happen all the time. If it gets worse I'll be concerned then, for now I'll stack it up to a characteristic of this tranny/being still very new.
Thanks for your feedback everyone.
