So wondering what other speed owners are running for oil, both in brand and in weight?

most common grade is 5w-30 and is recommended for your engines.

some prefer 0w-30, a true synthetic group such as Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple and German Castrol

I have a regular three and run 5w-20 mobil one syntec and on my yukon xl i run 0w-30 german castrol and my s10 pickup i run regular castrol.

so far all are running smoothly and great.

Be aware, Mazda has also issued a TSB(I think it was a TSB, it was something) saying that 5W40 should be used in Speed's with smoking turbo's.

Personally, I've got a regular 3 and run 5W30 Royal Purple.

if you check MSF, a lot of speed owners there run Pennzoil Platinum (PP) 5w30 and, if you can find it, PP euro formula 5w40. (http://oilstore.stores.yahoo.net/pesy5weufoca.html)

Some others are running Redline, German Castrol, and the list of usual suspects for synthetic.

I'm running 5W-30 Royal Purple on my MS3.

I run Amsoil 5W-30 in my Speed3 and German Castrol 0W-30 in the regular 2005 hatch. Both cars have 8K oil change intervals. I had been running Castrol 5W-20 in the 2005 Hatch up until about a year and a half ago, but it is now outside overnight and the MS3 is in the garage.

Both cars run great and have had zero mechanical issues of any kind.

See I have Royal Purple 5W30 in the car right now, however maybe because I actually DRIVE the car LOL, I find my oilpressure at idle when warm 5-10psi which to me is definately low. When warm its at 45ish psi at 3000RPM which is within range of the stock specs, but it still worries me that the pressure is that low.

I am personally thinking, that fuel dilution is a problem and its been thinned to 5w20 (or sheared down to 5w20). I have been in contact with RP and they are going to do a oil analysis for me.

I under the recommendation of TheMan going to try Redline 5w40 and hope that it can withstand against shearing better and maintain a good pressure under idle.

What do others get at idle for oil pressure when the engine/oil is warm?

Curios to those who use RP... How often do you change?
My old VW used RP but only changed every 6-7 months

I been running 5w20..the next oil change i am switching to 5w30. I will be using castrol syntec for the next 4 oil changes and then i am going to be using amsoil.

The reason why i am using castrol syntec is cause i am still under warranty and i have to change every 8,000km and i got the castrol syntec on sale for cheap..lol but once it's off warranty i am going to extend my oil changes so i am going to start using amsoil

5W 30 is what the dealership and manual recommends. Apparently the Speed3 and CX-7/9 are the only engines that use this grade while all others use 5W-20

Whats everyones oil pressure @ idle once the engine/coolant/oil is warm? Just curious to know if my gauge is off, or if its actually right and I am worrying for no apparent reason, or if something else is going wrong.

I do know that at 3000rpm when the car is hot i get 55-60psi once I changed my oil over to redline 5w40

I'd be running 5w40 on any Turbo application as it will better handle the added heat! I'm partial to Total (Elf).

I'll let you know tonight, just to be sure and specific.

Your 60psi sounds about right for a fully warmed up engine at around 3,000rpm. On a cold engine, I believe mine runs in the 80+psi range and slowly comes down to the 55-60psi range once warmed.

Hate to sound like a noob but how or where are you guys reading your oil pressure at idle?

You need an after-market oil pressure gauge.

Here you go. Just drove home. There are always some fluctuations in the values but here is a consistent average.

Oil is Amsoil 5W-30 with about 5K on it since last change.

At idle cold: 30psi
At idle warm: 20psi

At 3000rpm cold: 80psi
At 3000rpm warm: 60psi

Add about 2psi to all these values if you're running with the AC on, or at the windows setting which turns the AC compressor on.

What type of values were you reading on the old oil vs the new grade oil?

With Royal Purple 5w30 AFTER about 2000kms w/ some spirited driving
At idle cold: ~25psi
At idle warm: ~5psi

At 3000rpm cold: ~70psi
At 3000rpm warm: ~45psi

After my oil change and swap over to Redline 5w40
At idle cold: ~50psi
At idle warm: ~12psi

At 3000rpm cold: ~90psi
At 3000rpm warm: ~60psi

I have royal purple (the company) willing to do a UOA for me because I think the oil sheared to a 20wt. They say it shouldnt, but according to my pressures it has. Given that with a oilchange my pressures are back up (could also be the thicker/heavier weight as well), but regardless they want a sample of the oil to see whats going on. I suppose fuel dilution IS a big problem with these cars as others have suspected.

Actually the manual does state a 5w-30 can be used in the NA 2.3. :) The reason 5w-20 is recommended is for fuel conservation apparently.

After reading all these oil pressure reading posts, ....Damn, I gotta get myself some guages!!...I just love knowing all that shite going on with the engine!! :chuckle

Hmmm, interesting contrast between the two oils. Low oil pressure is usually a bad indication and not a good sign at all. Glad to see the values more normal after the switch.

I also need to edit my original post. The 'cold' values I used were taken from my car when I left work, but it been driven at lunch and then sat for about 3.5-4 hours. So, it was cold, but the values were a little different than the true cold values of when my car has been left overnight.

Here is the revision.

Oil is Amsoil 5W-30 with about 5K on it since last change.

At idle completely cold (car not run and in garage overnight): 82psi
At idle cold (car not run for 3-4 hours): 30psi
At idle warm engine: 20psi

At 3000rpm completely cold (car not run and in garage overnight): 100-110psi
At 3000rpm cold (car not run for 3-4 hours): 80psi
At 3000rpm warm: 60psi

Add about 2psi to all these values if you're running with the AC on, or at the windows setting which turns the AC compressor on.

I've ran Mobil1 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w30...M1 doesn't fare too well in a properly driven MS3, and this is backed up by UOA's...PP is the better of the 2 oil IMO.

I've also ran a German full-synth 5w40 that helped with smoking turbo, but once the turbo was fixed, I've gone back to PP for now...going to try German Castrol 0w30 next oil change.
