Sounds like they hacked the RFID system on the keys... I think certain Lexus SUVs are also vulnerable.. Which I guess makes sense since they're the same company. It might not even be RFID, I think the keys might use bluetooth... I remember reading about a vulnerability like 2 years ago on the Lexus' cause my boss had one and I used to tease him about it ;)

wow makes me wonder how safe all the "smart key" cars are and how long it will take before they start targeting other cars :S

a while ago my parent had a fairly brand new RAV4 lifted from her office building. eye witness said they noticed a tow truck circling the area. she was not the only car stolen.

it takes them seconds to lift a car and no one ever question if a tow is legit or not. if you saw a car being towed from a parking lot or driveway, would you question? most likely not.

never found, so i assumed it was shipped overseas or chopped (some body shop needed parts?).

the "smart key" isn't that safe. 20 minutes on a laptop in 2006 and the codes were hacked.

simplest thing to do was to follow someone into a restaurant for lunch, sit within close proximity, pretend to do work on a laptop while it cracked the codes, get up and leave when it did, drive off with the car.

that's how David Beckham's 2 X5's were stolen in 2006 (http://www.realtechnews.com/posts/3025)

The X5's i find hard to beleive because in 2006 they still had the e53 (old body style) and they also did not have the smart key technology in those trucks. That technology started in 2007 and up. The 3 series was a split production in 06 if you ordered the coup or cab it came with the e46 (old body style) chasis with a regular key and if you had a sedan it had the e90 (new body style) chasis and came with the smart key. Sorry for my explanation just thought id enlighten you on bmw's lol

don't kill the messenger :chuckle

there are many reports/links/articles of Beckham's X5, equipped with 'smart key', having been stolen in 2006.

NO NO i dont doubt you lol just i find it a little bit odd lol Unless of course he had a 07truck in 06 which is likely possible as manufacturers seem to be releasing newer cars earlier and earlier lol
