Odd that a OW20 wouldn't be sold in a Northern country.

Actually if you go to many Econo car boards such as Prius or Yaris boards, alot of people swear by the 0w-20 grade and the Mobil version of it also (seems to be popular)...Some have done oil analysis with some very good results. :)

Mind you it's alittle thin for my tastes.

Yep, it's for a fuel economy experiment. Doesn't Redline make a 0W20 too?

Yup, a little more costly though! but it'll pour in -60C temps :)

If you're up for a little drive I saw Pennzoil Platinum 0W20 on the shelf at the north end Canadian Tire in Barrie this summer. I suppose other CTC stores might stock it too.

yes, but there's other factors here...
how hard do they drive their cars?
do they go in EMA mode most of the time? (not possible with us)
what are their oil change intervals?
what conditions do they drive in?

I would imagine great UOAs with relatively short OCIs through easy driving, lots of EMAs, and in milder conditions

now OTOH, for mazdas, they've been known to be pretty brutal on oil as far as japanese engines goes... it doesn't help that flat tappet lifters can easily shear oil, especially if its a group 3 (or lower) oil

you have to remember one thing, just because it works for brand A car, doesn't mean it works good on brand B
I've seen many terrible things 20 weight oils have done to mazdas and some other makes of cars

yes they do

but less than 1% fuel economy improvement at the expense of many miles of engine life? I'm not quite sure about that!

Less than 1%? When I switched from 5W20 dino oil to 5W30 synthetic, fuel economy increased from around 26.4 to 27.5 MPG (without looking at the data). That was an increase of over 4%. You don't supposed changing to a 0W20 will yield a further increase of 2-4%?

Also, I'm not convinced that a Mobil 1 or Redline 0W20 will have a noticable degradation of wear protection.

TheMAN

you're comparing apples to oranges

but going from synthetic 30 weight to 20 weight might not yield much difference
the issue isn't wear protection, but of oil shearing, fuel dilution, and oil burning

go ahead and try it though and let's see those UOAs (before and after)... why argue and speculate over this right now... just don't be surprised if you do have to top off the oil with 20 weight though

I couldn't find any 0W20 from any manufacturer anywhere. So I got Mobil 1 0W40. It might be thicker than I'd like at operating temps, but hopefully it makes up for it in cold starts.

There's so much talk because that's not a simple question to answer! But through all the talk and there has been plenty over the years on this board over oil, you should be able to make up your own mind. :)

I won't use 5W-20 or any grade which is non-synthetic in my car and I have my reasons which I've stated many times, but that's me! So it still stands; ultimately it's up to you.

You're selling yourself short if you're not using synthetic. Increased oil change intervals and improved fuel economy are a no-brainer.

You'll be fine, what I meant above was a 5w-20 in conventional.I was using Mobil 5w-20 for quite a while and it seemed to work fine but I'll tell you when I switched to GC 0w-30, I noticed a huge difference when starting the engine when cold and especially extreme cold! It starts easier, runs much smoother to warm up and alot of the clacking/clicking etc; has basically dissappeared.

An awesome oil in my books with winter coming up, and costs the same as Mobil 5w-20 or less.:)

Bringing this back from the dead.

Mobil1 now offers 0W-20 again but now its branded with a green cap and advertises "Advanced Fuel Economy".

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_0W-20.aspx

Offered at CT and this week at 25% off. Bought enough for one oil change.

I thought it was discontinued...

why wouldn't you get amsoil which is the same price at garage16? im assuming mobil 0w-20 is not a 'true' synthetic, so for me it makes sense to just by the mazda 0w-20 syn which is under $4 a litre vs $8 for mobil 1 at CT.

FYI, for any oil to reach the 0W rating it must definitely be a 'true' synthetic BASE. It is not possible to reach this standard with a conventional oil BASE. I agree though on just going to Mazda getting their 0W-20 oil change for $49.95, if your going to go 0w20.

I just read about Mazda 0W-20 synthetic oil today. I didn't know the dealership was offering it for $49.95.

Is there a spec or data sheet on the Mazda 0W-20 oil? Is it "true" synthetic oil?

EDIT: This is a really good deal especially given the price of 0W-20 through retail channels (Mobil1, Amsoil, etc) already costs $50 itself.

didn't know thanks for clarifying. always assumed that only german castrol was true synthetic out of the mainstream brands (aside from amsoil/redline/royal purple/motul).

Oh ok. I wasn't sure if that was the going rate or if it was all inclusive. Yeah I would assume it's plus tax. Still, $58 all in is pretty good.

I can confirm 0W20 oil changes, including filter, plus tax are 49.99$ at Dave Wood Mazda. I have the platinum package I got with the car to get lifetime free oil changes/filters. I asked how much it was without this.

I didn't ask if they had any information on the oil however, other than the fact that they were saying it was synthetic. True/semi unknown.
