Okay...those of you following this saga...know the story....but the guy I am helping out (tps7c) waited 40k in between oil changes...so we decided to do his VANOS to see what the damage is.....The below is what we have, and I am speechless....I need help....I need my mommy.

Seriously though...I think we are going to remove as much as we can....do the VANOS job and let some Auto RX remove the sludge...hopefully.

My question is...at this point should we worry about trying to remove all of the visible sludge?

Oh yeah...actually 60k...I had to beat the truth outta him...lol

Looking for ideas and not smart ass comments...Toms a good guy...and is learning a valuable lesson....lol

Whats better than one Bimmer at the Wilson's.....Two!!!

i can't believe that the engine actually ran for nearly 100,000 km without an oil change and the main issue after that is the sludge build up.

anyone wants to volunteer their mazda for an experiment? lol

for the record, 60,000 MILES = ~96,000KM...just under 100,000!

I want to kick the guy in the nuts...and give props to BMW for making an engine that can run on grime.

i remember when my aunt 'forgot' about the necessity of oil changes in her cadi sts and drove for about 12K over the suggested mileage. When the red oil light came on on her dash, she figured she'll just drive home and then call the dealer. at that point the engine just seized.

but 100K....that's just impressive

I'm surprised they never put additional sensors to detect a low oil level condition and prevent the car from starting next time u try to drive...

If this happened tonight, traffic will be great tmr as 1/4 of cars might be off the road.

Ya I remember when I was in high school and one of my friends moms drove an 01 corolla and NEVER changed the oil (she was clearly oblivious) and the engine just seized eventually. Had to pay for a new motor lol

This is just a sad story... I mean seriously now. Get a friggin brain.

should have contacted BMW - i'm sure they'd take care of the cleaning costs - That feat in itself is a huge testiment to build quality.

My previous car (MX-3), I drove for almost 100,00 on 1 oil change :), no engine problems at all either.

I also commuted 500+km every weekend for 1.5 years(from Brighton to Hamilton and back), not to mention the 40-50km a day to drive to work and back.

Thing ran like a champ!

BMW should fix it for free and use the document the incident for a commercial. That's amazing it ran for that long.

I knew someone who didn't change his oil on an '89 Accord and the engine seized. lol.

more than likely easier to replace the head, and jus clean up the block/do a new bearing roll in on the bottom end...eitherway its alot of work for sure lol

Thats just a bad idea.....
"Here at BMW, we will reward you for being stupid! Drive our cars unmaintained for 100,000kms and we'll fix it for free! Why? Because you can and we have deep pockets!!"

Great, it ran that long.... but I've seen a Sebring run 65,000kms without an oil change (the girl had no idea that oil changes were needed) Needless to say, Chrysler did nothing for her. There is no rewarding stupidity. And yes, it did seize at that point.

My dad was bad for that, he always seem to have oil burners or leakers, so all he did was added oil, never changed it. His cars ran for a very long time, as it was always getting new oil in there...lol

I THINK what he meant was that BMW should have fixed it for him to use it as an example. Obviously not doing it for EVERYONE...but for the "rights" I guess to use it in a commercial/ad of some kind.

Still probably would never happen...

But thats what I'm saying, if you show people it can do this, people are stupid, they will assume that means they CAN do it. We are talking about BMWs, yuppies that don't go under their own hoods. (not all, but 75% or more of them) They will just think "Oh, one less inconvenience, I only have to go in every 100K instead of every 8K"

I thought their engine oil change intervals are longer than 8K kms? One of the dealer was saying something about only requiring an oil change Once A Year or 20K kms cause they use Sythetic Oil :o

I obviously told the family member who's looking at these cars to ignore that advise and get the oil changed every 5~8K kms, cause a 20K interval is just plain stupid for the long run.

The 3-series sure do drive\handle nice tho, I can see why ppl love em so much! :)

I think it is 20,000km...at least for mercedez it's 20,000km and my dad's been changing his oil in his mercedez every 20,000km and so far he is a 310,000km and running strong..*knockwood*

both my x5's had 20K recommended intervals, which is typical for newer bimmers, but the guy managed to do 5 times that mileage

No kidding, imagine the warranty nightmare BMW would end up in.
