hey guys,
what's your opinion on your first oil change of a brand new ms3?
the owners manual says 8000 km or 4 mths
others suggest, the first at 1000 km
what do you guys think?

I would do the first at 1000. Then according to the manual. I say you really cant do any harm by changing it early (unless Mazda uses specific break in oil). For what 50 bucks, I say its cheap insurance :)

Some believe to keep the factory oil in place for the full 8K in order to allow proper 'seating' of the engine components.
Personally, you don't need a full 8K to do this properly, so I always change out my factory oil in a new car at 2,000-2,500km and replace with full synthetic at that time. Then I change it again at 8K and then follow the every 8K schedule.

general question - why 8k? every other car i've ever owned has been 5k.
(i guess because these japanese engines have twice the awesome).
I believe it's because Mazda uses semi-synth oil, which can go longer between oil changes.

Mazda does NOT use semi-snythetic oil any more..:flaming

there was some myth about how the OEM oil from the factory that came with the car is some magic unicorn blood extract that was made by a blue Mazda god for the sole purpose of breaking in your engine...lol...
some guy even went to tell me that you can't even buy the oil that comes from the factory and that even if I could source it, it'd be $20/litre...more lolz...
I changed out my oil at 1500km...went full-synth. I figured by that point, I've done enough "breaking in"...

I drove my car easy till about 1600km when I did a dealer stock oil change. I then beat the crap out of it and at 8000km went to synthetic. Never any problems with my engine.

I'm a firm believer in the engine comes broken in. I did my first oil change at 1800km with my store bought Semi-Synthetic, then again every 8000km with store bought Semi-Synthetic. My 2 cts...

You can believe all you want but that won't make it true.

This is true my friend, for a lot of things. That shit comes sealed IMO but wtf do I know haha! My car, my cash did what I felt was right.

Mazda has had a 8000km interval for as long as I can remember. And that was B4 synthetic engine oil...OMG, how did we survive? The only thing there used to be was a change from 5w-30 to 10w-30 oil from summer to winter months.
IMO changing your oil at 1000km is a bit of overkill...I like to do mine every 5000km, that way there is always a "0" or a "5" on the odometer. Plus if I say every 5K then I will probably get it in B4 8000km (with in the warranty, like no one else puts it off or forgets lol)

I've owned Mazda's for close to 7 years now, I don't recall them doing oil changes every 8000km with conventional oil. Althought they did change grades liek you said, that I remember. I run the same grade no matter the season.

Really what was the interval then....I guess I just can't remember what I was doing 15+ years ago now LOL...
It was 8000km....there used to be an initial 3000km in spection, but it didn;t involve an oil change.
Cosmo...
P.s. We didn;t used synthetic either...back in the day...some people did mkae us put 1L of "dura Lube" in there cars from time to time, but we had to run the bottle under HOT water for 10 mins so it would flow out of the bottle LOL

I remember my Protege 5 manual stating every 5000 km and that's what Mazda had in there fancy computer, so I guess that's why I was doing it every 5000km. Now that they use Semi-Synthetic oil its every 8000 km, according to the manual/fancy computers. But what do I know...

You're so wise Cosmo, you know everything there is to know. I was foolish to have doubted you, how will I ever sleep tonight?

I do my own oil changes. I keep the receipts from when I purchased the oil and I mark the section of the manual for oil changes everytime I do it.
That being said, I did take my MS3 into the dealer for the 24K service and I will for the 48K too as they do a few other things other than oil changes that they could dispute later in the event of a warranty claim if I didn't take it in.
