During the morning commute Thursday, the overnight flash freeze left the GTA with slick roads and a lot of black ice. Unsuspecting drivers spun out into guardrails and collided into other vehicles as a result of the icy conditions.
North of the city, Ontario Provincial Police reported treacherous conditions, with high winds and snow squalls moving in and out, said Sgt. Dave Woodford.
While attending to a car in the ditch on southbound Highway 400 just south of Canal Rd., an OPP cruiser was rear-ended by another vehicle at about 5 a.m.. Police had the left lane blocked to traffic as the vehicle involved in the initial crash was being towed out of a ditch, Woodford said, adding that the cruiser's lights were flashing when the vehicle crashed into it.
"When you see emergency vehicles, you're supposed to move over into another lane, not drive into the cruiser," Woodford said.
*facepalm*
