View Full Version : Which car would you get (max 60 grand)
MSMitch

Okay, my father (in his 60's) looking for a new car - can be new or used - top price, about 60 grand (plus taxes) - he'd prefer something out of the ordinary, fast, can be manual or auto, he would prefer to drive it all year, but he is willing to garage it for the winter. What would you recommend?
Cars on the short list:
2005 Mercedes SL55 AMG (this was an unbelievable car to drive) - his current top pick, maybe one of those after market warranty companies will have a comprehensive warranty.
2007 BMW Z4 M series Coupe (a real fun car to drive - but it is always "on" - no relaxing in that baby!)
2001-2003 Porsche 911 Turbo
2004+ Carrera 4S (my recommendation to him as it can be driven all year round, but not many places to get serviced)
2007+ Cayman S
2008+ Audi TTS
2010 Infiniti G37x coupe (mainly cause it has a new warranty and is awd)
Since you have no trucks to pick from i would have to say the 2005 Mercedes SL55 AMG ..
my dad has a 1998 c230 and that car has over 310,000km and everything is still tight like it came off the lot..they are well built cars

Please, add trucks to the list as well as any other cars that come to mind...
We drive a Cayenne Turbo - and it's still on the back-burner - but it's even worse on gas than the Benz. (we used to have a c280 - one of the best cars we owned - or leased at the time)

All great choices, but I'd suggest the 2008+ Audi TTS simply because I :hawt it however not sure about the reviews on the car yet. Definitely a vechicle that speaks for itself.

My first choice(s) in order:
1 - 2007 BMW Z4 M series Coupe
2 - 2001-2003 Porsche 911 Turbo
3 - 2004+ Carrera 4S
Honestly, if you or your dad are worried about warranty and having a new car, get the G37; it makes the most sense. I would park my other selections during the winter (even the 4S).

Highly recommend the RS4 or else the new S4 3.0T with a supercharged 6 cylinder. You should be able to push about 400HP once APR, GIAC come out with a chip.
Also check for a used S5 for a 2 door.

That RS4 is pretty nice. Not as much of a beast as the SL55, but much more practical while still being somewhat of a beast!

More seriously though, I'm gonna have to go with the SL55 AMG. My neighbour has one and it is an absolute beast. Sounds amazing, performs well. Don't know how it will be in terms of maintenance. But put the throttle down and it will provide a kick in the nads.

Funny, I can find a 2001-2003 awd 911 turbo for around 57,000, but the older 80's and 90's are typically much more. I had a chance to drive a 1984 4spd 911 turbo a number of years ago - and still one of the most thrilling (and challenging) rides - they are a bit too wild (driving) for my dad's taste though - one wrong throttle blip and you'll be facing oncoming traffic!

Only comes in auto - but the selectable auto/manual/sport feature actually works quite well. Mash the pedal and you are in triple digits in 4.? seconds!
I particularly like that it is rather understated. A Porsche would get more attention (from cops and regular folk alike). But it has quite a grumble to that engine that can attract a bit of attention.

have you ever driven one? It's pointless to own. Not once did I find a road where I could floor it (not even getting onto the highway). By the time the pedal goes down and you shift once you're at 100. Fun toy, but there's no reason to own one, unless your other hobby is paying maintenance.

The Benz had 90,000km on it. A bit higher than my dad liked. (I personally don't mind higher mileage cars if they are well cared for, but the Benz was from the States, so service history was a bit more sketchy.

I was actually just thinking that earlier today as I drove by the area that it was probably Segal and not BuyRight. They definitely have some pretty nice cars in there, although I haven't actually been in. How's your dad liking the car so far? And...I'm glad he got it with a 6-speed!

He's loving the car (I should say we since I've probably driven it just as much since he got it). Really comes to life between 5 and 8,000rpm - shifts are smoothest in that range too!
Put snows on them (thanks again SimplyTire) but haven't had any snow to test them in yet (not companing mind you).
Even got a booster seat for my 5 year old - he loves it more than us I think.
My dad still longs for the power and luxury of the SL55 AMG - I'm just hoping that he can hold out long enough till I can afford to buy the Porsche off of him. :)
The 6speed was one of the main drawing factor over the Mercedes. It could use a shorft shifter kit though (and a sport exhaust, maybe some aluminum bezels, new rims, etc) - maybe in the summer...

Haha...I know if my dad picked up one of these I'd definitely be shoeing him out of the driver's seat too :P
As for the upgrades and what-not...all in due time! I'm sure he'll have it for quite some time so no need to rush things :P
My uncle has a C4S Cabriolet and he drives it 365 days a year. Runs winters on the stock wheels and has some other rims for summer. The 6-speed alone would outweigh any advantages the mercedes might have because it's just not the same if you aren't 'rowing-your-own' =P My uncle sports a booster seat in his too...must be nice to be a kid riding around in one of these :P
