How to remove back plastic piece?

I have a sedan and it has an annoying noise when the car goes over bumps causing the back plastic piece to make noises. The noise isn't consistent but enough to annoy me. I've done a search on TM3 but found no walk-through on how to dismantle the back trim piece. On M3F, here's the link (http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=17951.0) to it, but all the pics are dead. I am wondering if anyone have a copy of that post or have their own version of taking apart the back plastic piece.

It should be pretty straight forward. I haven't done it but the only thing you REALLY have to worry about are the airbags in the rear pillars.

If you can read the How-To and figure most of it you should be fine. Like I said though, the air bags are the tedious part for the removal/reinstall.

ya that piece is sooo annoying lol when my subs are on i wanna fill under it so it stops.. id like to see how to safely remove it too

Try shoving some chunks of foam weather stripping (the kind used for around air conditioners) in from underneath.

This is from a work shop service manual.

1. Remove the following parts:

(1) Rear seat
(2) Rear scuff plate
(3) Tire house trim
(4) C-pillar trim
2. Remove the fasteners.

3. Pull the rear package trim upward and detach clips A and locator pin B from the body.

4. Detach tabs C from the body and remove the rear package trim.

5. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Thanks cwp_sedan, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Now I just need to work up the courage to take apart the C-pillar with airbags. I totally forgot that 07+ had side airbags.

Did you try stuffing some foam in between the plastic and the metal from underneath? Stick your head in the trunk and look up.... looks of nice big holes through which you can jam the foam.

Worth trying IMO before starting to pull things apart.........

I agree. I would try anything and everything before pulling the rear deck out.

Most spray expanding foams harden afterward. If you use it, all that will happen is that the change in temp and flexing will cause it to break apart, etc and end up causing you more of a headache.

Worth trying IMO before starting to pull things apart.........I've finally looked from the trunk side to see where I can stuff some old clothing between the metal and plastic but see no cracks big enough to even stuff socks up. However, from the backseat if you lift up the LATCH clips there's plenty of space to stuff cloth in there. Is this what everyone is referring to?
