I would use a camber kit even with a mild drop. Tire prices are getting high, specially with the new tax. It's a good trade off. You save money in the long run.
I am running prokits with stock shocks, and a camber kit.
Even though my car is dead :(
After I was lowered on prokits, my rear camber was about 2.8 / 2.9 degrees. The max "in spec" value is 3 degrees, although it's less than ideal for tire wear. It's more noticable on wider tires and wheels with less offset. (Comparing my snowflakes to RX8s)
I installed camber links and set them to 1.5 each

Max Mazda spec is -2.3* according to every alignment sheet I've seen...
I had a prokit drop with -2.3* and was happy...until I started autocrossing and the tail would not rotate properly. Went to a Racing Beat rear sway, and helped, but was about same as stock. I wanted more rotation. Went with adjustable camber bushings, set rear camber to -1.3* and 0 toe, tail end dances.

I'll take your word for it. I probably just remember wrong cause it was so long ago!
