View Full Version : New key
Hi everyone, I need a couple of new keys for my 2005 Mazda3 sport for family members. The dealer here in Thunder Bay told us the keys have a chip in them and would cost $120.00 per key to order. Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get some new keys? Do our keys have chips? Much appreciated.

1. Yes our keys are chipped.
2. If you have 2 keys already, you can order the keys for $40 or something like that online, then get it cut at any locksmith, and program it yourself.
3. If you only have 1 key, you are SOL, and have to get the dealer to program the key. However, you can still save some money by ordering the key online and getting it cut yourself, then only paying to get it programmed.

I believe yes you can get a flip key and program it yourself. PM Flipdaddy for prices. IIRC it was $60-80.

You can get a flip key i got one from flipdady (Joe) a few weeks ago, you just need to have two sets of keys in order to program it.

Just curious, why do you need two keys to program a key?

I guess its a security feature so that if someone steals your key and your car, they can't duplicate keys.

whatever you do, don't buy the key blanks from dealextreme. i bought 2 and they were both too thick to fit in the ignition key cylinder. ended up getting OEM ones from Joe.
for those that only have 2 keys, buy a 3rd key, program it, and set it aside. if you ever lose 1 key, an OEM one costs ~$40 versus only having 2 keys, losing 1 and then having to buy a new key AND having the dealer reprogram the keys for $100.
OP, contact Flipdady/Joe at Mazda of Toronto. He should be able to ship the key blanks to you in Thunder Bay. Then you get the blanks cut with your original key and,
1) if you have 2 keys, you program the new keys yourself (it takes less than 10 seconds to do each one):
Programming Transponder Keys
Items needed:
1. 2 pre-programmed transponder keys.
2. 1 new transponder key
The timing is critical to this procedure, please read through the entire procedure before attempting.
Procedure:
1. Insert one of the pre-programmed transponder keys and turn the ignition to \"on\", leave on for at least one second (I wait until the red key symbol in the instrument cluster extinguishes), remove the key from the ignition.
2. Within 5 seconds insert the second pre-programmed key and urn the ignition to \"on\" for at least one second but no more than 5 seconds (use the key symbol for this as well) then remove the second key.
3. within 10 seconds insert the new key in the ignition and turn the ignition to \"on\", if you are successful the red key symbol will illuminate then extinguish after about a second.
If you are not successful the red key symbol will flash repeatedly to indicate that you have inserted an invalid key. Remove the key, wait a minute and try it again, it took me a few times to get it perfect and I had done it before. (http://torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=7570)
2) if you have 1 key, you take the 2nd key to the dealer and have them program it. then use the procedure above to program additional keys.
just wondering... does this key include buttons for say keyless entry on the fob?

If you get a flip key, then yes you can use the remote on it. I'm going to order one off ebay and get a friend to bring it up from the US for me. I called Probart Mazda in London, and it will cost $70 for the reprogramming and $10 for cutting the key.

I just lost one of my keys & fob. That feeling sucks big time.
I'd have to reprogram the one I have and program the new one. Can that be done or is that too easy? Who knows if someone is out there looking for my car with the fob I lost.

You will have to take it to the dealers. Since you only have 1 key, you cannot program your own. Plus, getting the dealer to program your key will stop your lost key from working with your car.

Can a flip key fob be programmed to run a VIPER alarm fob?

I don't believe so, as I'm pretty sure they use different frequencies.

Dealer wants to charge $68 key, $125 fob and $100 labour. Are you f'n kidding me :rant. Noway it takes an hour to reprogram that stuff. I'll get everything aftermarket for sure and I guess I'll have to swallow the labour charge.
Or maybe my keys will somehow turn up.:bang

buy a flipkey through Flipdaddy/Joe at MoT... ~$75 and comes with the key AND remote fob.
if a flipkey is not your thing, the key from Joe is ~$45, not sure on the price of the remote fob.

Got 3 fobs for $45 and two keys for $36. I couldn't find a flip key with matching #, price $50. I just need programming.
If anyone needs a fob I'll have an extra. kpu41846

Would I be able to get a cheap backup cut anywhere so I could at least open my door if I lock my keys in there? Just picked up my new 3 ('06) and only 1 key and fob came with it...

Are the transponder key blanks the same.
I mean - a blank for an 04 can be cut and programmed for an 05?
I know the FOBs are meant for matching codes, but not sure about the keys

04-09 blank transponder keys are the same and can use for various models.

It has no other way. I just got key pgmming from MOT who charge $109.99 + tax (10% off if you're a member TM3).

It's too late when you already paid for. Next time, ask first before sign any paper.
