View Full Version : High rpm initially on acceleration - all gears.

Not sure how to explain this but I'll do my best. I'm just looking for some thoughts on causes.

2004 Mazda 3 - 5 Door

If I accelerate with by stepping on the gas "gently", the car accelerates fairly normally.

If I step on the gas more aggressively (not actually flooring it), the rpms will jump to let's say 3,000 - 4,500 with no power at all. This is only for about 1-2 seconds, then it will come back down to around 2,000 (normal) and the car will begin to accelerate. This can happen in any gear.

Could this be simply a slipping belt or something more ominous.
I did have the belt replaced last year after the pulley snapped off but it has been running fine until about 2 weeks ago.

What gear are you in? Do you smell burning? I'm thinking your clutch is done.

*** EDIT: i reread the post and see that you say it happens in any gear.

it sure sounds like a clutch...where does your clutch engage when you let out on your clutch pedal? higher up in its travel?

yukon

I would say clutch engages at about 1/3 down pretty much where it always has. ie, it doesn't feel any different.

Here is another thing to throw in the mix just to make sure.

Let's say I am driving on the highway in 5th gear. Would that not mean that the clutch is already engaged? Why would it "slip" when I accelerate to pass or speed up? Can it slip out and then back in if it is already "in gear"?

It only seems to happen when I get the gas pedal down to about halfway.

Donutz

Yes, it is engaged. The problem is that the clutch doesn't have the holding power any more. So where a healthly clutch would stay engaged (I.e., clutch disc against the flywheel) it sounds like yours is shot so the engine speeds up and the flywheel spins against the clutch; instead of spinning the clutch and putting the power to the ground.

Thanks for explanation. Looks like yet another repair....

Has anyone gotten estimates on repair/replacement clutch for 2004 Mazda 3 5-door.

Estimate I got was $900 for clutch and $75 for flywheel including labour.

Also was told it was a half day job.

Sound reasonable??

Haven't seen him on the boards in awhile...nor do I know if it's a 04. But 1flycdnm3 has replaced clutch. Forgot the price but he did it through a Mazda dealer so he can probably chime in if he's around.

Anyone going to recommend Jimmy....? Seems like the standard response to all questions here... Jks

Maybe it's time to get an aftermarket clutch? It will last longer and give you better performance, although you might have to trade-off a bit of smoothness.

When my clutch goes, I plan on getting a Exedy clutch and flywheel.

Guys, thread cleaned. Keep it on-topic or I will lock it.

Dadinho_nfg,

Posts about street racing are not going to be tolerated on here. If you want to compare 0-60 times from auto reviews, that is one thing, but comparisons about who's car is faster while street racing is both illegal and stupid. You posted the same message in another thread and that was deleted also. Consider this soft warning.

Condor888000,

Your post was removed as it was a direct personal attack and as much as I may personally agree with the sentiment, it violates forum conduct.

With something as retarded as street racing my post was warranted. A deletion won't stop me from posting something like it again if another fool feels like making such an idiotic post.

Some things should not be tolerated at all, by any members. Street racing falls into that category. The initial posts in response were soft and did not get the message across. Mine got the message across, which is exactly what I wanted it to do.

Anyway, I digress...

Wow, talk about overreaction. I would hate to see how you respond to people on cell phones (while driving)....

Either way, yeah, keep racing on the track.

lol i didnt know you couldnt post about that stuff :O but then again i go 90km/h on the highway so im not that kinda guy lol!

ANYWAY

so not to make a new thread... what kinda life do our clutches last?

stevenma188

Clutch life really depends on the driver. Some people barely use the clutch (ie rev matches) so it would last forever, while others would burn through a clutch in 50,000km. It's all dependent on how you drive. However, I would also be interested in hearing when people have had to change their clutch. I'm at 175k and I can only assume I'm still on the factory clutch (bought the car used).

It's not your clutch; it's your rotary end gerder. If you take it in, get them to top up your damper reservoir. That'll save them having to do it for the 160 K service.

From the OP's description it sure sounds like a worn clutch disc...actually most definately the clutch disc. Depending on where the OP lives he should call or message anyone of our sponsors to get quotes on replacement costs. An aftermarket clutch like the Exedy would be a lower cost alternative to replacing with OEM, but the labour will still be expensive, as it takes several hours to do properly. Unless the OP wants to attempt it himself, which I would not suggest unless he has extensive experience. Budget anywhere from $600-$900 for replacement.

To answer stevema188 above. Im hitting 190k and still on the factory clutch, with so far no signs of slippage. (knocks on wood).

I'm sure the op has either had the clutch replaced or has gotten rid of the car.

Original post is from January 2010.

Not at all. I am experiencing the same thing with my car and read this thread for information to see if it could help me.
