View Full Version : 2010 with surface rust after only 6 months

the 2010 mazda 3 gx sport is covered in tiny specs of surface rust.
dealer says it is rail dust from transport or fallout or something like that.
they will treat the bodywork first with a clay bar rub then chemical spray.
I'm wondering if this will be effective or if this car is doomed to be another rust bucket form mazda.
and will this clay bar deteriorate the paint/clearcoat in any way?
My car is white and the rust is easy to see, if the car was red or some other colour it may be difficult, so watch out!

The dealer is correct. The Marks are rail dust. This is very common. The Clay should only be part of the process, they should polish and wax the finish after. As long as they complete all steps, your finish will be fine.

Agreed.
My white Super Duty needs this done at least every two years.

Rail dust? Its more like brake dust every time you brake little pieces of metal comes off the pads and hits ur paint..

In this case, it is actually "rail dust". Metal particles from the train, that latched onto the car while in transit from BC to Ontario.

The term "rail dust" is what it says. Tiny bits of airborne metal that are blown onto the car. The cars are wrapped in plastic to prevent this but it can happen just sitting on the lot.
This metal particulate doesn't have to come from trains though. It can come from construction sites (cutting rebar) welding and a million other things.
When this tiny piece of metal settles on the paint and moisture is introduced it will begin to oxidize. The the tiny bit of metal grows jagged and starts to root into the paint. If you left it there forever and it contained enough material it would eventually work right through the paint.
Thats why a clay bar is a must.

I had a silver 2000 Protege, bought new in December 2000. Within no time I noticed these small rust spots, and almost died. The dealership told me to rub them off with wax and some elbow grease, which did work, but it was an ongoing battle over the life of the car. I bought a 2006 Tribute new, and selected the graphite colour because I thought the rust spots would be harder to see. i was right, and when I bought my 2010 3 gt sedan this past December, I chose graphite grey mica.

You may not be able to see them but.........
After you wash your car, gently run your fingers and palm over the paint. After a year you will feel little bumps some of which will be metal particulate.

LMAO. just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there, that's like saying I turned up the radio so I can't hear the noise.

Ignorance is bliss :)
As for me, I too have some, does it cause long term damage? Waiting for the weather to get warmer to clay.

Correct, wich is why he got the darker color, so he didn't have to look at them...and who doesn't turn up the tv when there is noise around?!

My car has been detailed by Ajax mazda to remove the rust, and they did a fantastic job. They cleaned every inch, opened and cleaned the doors and hatch areas and provided a rental while it was done. The car looks as good as new.
Thank goodness for the paint protection program, as this was all covered and didn't cost me a thing.

Everything is frozen (at least where I live!) so the process is very slow in the winter. Do it in the spring.

What, you mean I haven't solved the rail dust problem by buying a dark car? Well, I am shocked! Thanks for clearing things up for me. Thanks as well for reminding me that a loud radio doesn;t fix squeeks. Hilarious stuff!
I must remember to check back more often after posting something, as I guess one becomes subject to ridicule. Perhaps my attempt at humour didn't work for some of you, or perhaps you're sensitive to the matter because for some reason you bought a white car. Of course I know it's going on. I was sick of having to deal with it on a silver car, and knew I could avoid having to do it as often with a darker colour. Ever notice howdust on a black car stands out more than a silver car? Anyone ever decide against a black car because of that? What I did in choosing a dark car over a light one is much the same, except I was willing to trade extra dust for less waxing off rust spots.

I bought mine and waxed out most of the rust around the D piillars and above small quater window some still remain which is why I will use a soft clay bar to get what the waxing did not. I figure it was during transport as I picked mine up in Oct and detailed fully prior to the Canadain winter! I will be using the http://www.griotsgarage.com/ system.

anyone here use Meguiar's clay bar before? how does it compare with the clay bar's from eshine? are those worth the extra money? this kit I bought came with 2 clay bars, a bottle of quick detailer and a microfiber cloth.
bought this kit from Target in the US last weekend for $17.99 (compared to Canadian Tire $29.99): http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/CarWashingCleaning/CarPaintCare/PRD~0392846P/Meguiar%252527s%2525AE%252BQuik%252BClay%252BDetai ling%252BSystem.jsp#tab_page_reviews_li (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/CarWashingCleaning/CarPaintCare/PRD%7E0392846P/Meguiar%252527s%2525AE%252BQuik%252BClay%252BDetai ling%252BSystem.jsp#tab_page_reviews_li)

meguiar's clay bar is pretty good.. i prefer riccardo's (the one eshine sells)... it's more stretchy and seems to work just a little bit better... i think it's worth the extra money but both will get the job done just fine

Wash the car and then dry normally. Use final inspection spray and in small sections spray the body then rub the clay bar over that section. Then move to the next body panel and do the same, until you cover the whole car.

Washed and clay barred my car today. First time using a clay bar and it worked fairly well, got rid of a lot of those little specks of rust/rail dust, it got a little late and dark so I couldn't finish the entire car but I got a majority of the rail dust rubbed off :D I was even able to get off paint from cars that slammed their doors into mine.

its just like taking a shower, you lube and wipe all over, followed by polish and wax to complete the detailing

noob question, can i take my car through a car wash, and then clay bar and then wax?
what's the final inspection spray? do i really need to do that before the claybar?
and i know this is kinda stupid, but i saw the specks, and this was before i saw this thread, and they just came off when i picked at it with my nails :P

Good question... SooOoo many steps, someone wanna come over to my place and do a demo for us all? Hell, I'll even let you use my car as a test subject. :)
I am going to move this thread over to exterior maintenance as it relates to that section better.

No. The drive through car washes don't get the tiny grit/dirt off your car the same way a handwash does. You may end up just scratching the paint if you don't wash it properly first.
